Great router when paired with Tomato

ASUS WL-500GP V2 802.11b/g Multi-Functional Wireless Router with x2 USB Plug-N-Share hard drive function and Print Server Function
ASUS WL-500GP V2 802.11b/g Multi-Functional Wireless Router with x2 USB Plug-N-Share hard drive function and Print Server Function

Pros: As other reviewers have touched on, this router is EXCELLENT with Tomato (see 'other thoughts') or DD-WRT. I've owned this router for a few months now and have not had a single problem. It blends in fine in my apartment and I dig the orange LEDs on the grey and silver body as a change of pace from other manufacturers' designs. In my experience, pairing this router with either DD-WRT or Tomato makes it unbeatable. Sure, this router doesn't have a cool status LCD built-in, but if you're looking at this router you may not even want that, much less actually need such a feature. This router just works and works great in that it produces a nice, strong signal and it doesn't get hot or become unstable.

Cons: None, although others are mentioning ASUS's stock firmware as being bad, I have no experience with it seeing as I bought this router specifically for its working with Tomato, so that being said, I loaded Tomato (teddybear mod) on this as soon as I unboxed it. I suppose the only con is that it doesn't have gigabit, but with my computing being done via wireless, that's not a legitimate concern anyways in my particular situation.

Overall Review: if you decide to use Tomato (whether or not you go with Tomato vs. DD-WRT is a personal choice), be sure you get the Teddybear mod of Tomato, which enabled USB printer and filesharing support. if you just use the regular version of Tomato you will not be able to take advantage of the USB ports. also, it's worth mentioning the USB ports DO put out enough power for a 2.5" drive connected to one of the available ports. This allows you to connect a 1TB drive to your router and as an added bonus you can even run a script that spins down the disk when it's not being used or has been idle for a time interval of your choice. :) as a forewarning though, USB transfer rates on most any router are very slow, about 2MB/s in my experience with this router. not a total deal-killer though. it's just something all manufacturers need to improve, because based on what I'm reading on different blogs, forums, etc., even the routers specifically marketed as "media-sharing routers" have that problem, t

Great drive, great support!

LaCie XtremKey 16GB All-Terrain USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model 131075
LaCie XtremKey 16GB All-Terrain USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model 131075

Pros: Probably the best-built, sturdiest, and toughest USB drive you'll ever have the pleasure of owning. Read and write speeds on USB 2.0 are fine, nothing too exciting. LaCie's support is very attentive and DOES CROSS-SHIP should you have a malfunctioning unit. That's an excellent policy in my book. This drive feels absolutely solid. It was a little bit bigger than I was expecting when I finally got it but that's not a problem. if you haven't seen the promotional video on LaCie's site showing off this drive, go check it out!

Cons: Truth be told, the first drive I got stopped working after I formatted it to NTFS (I'm not saying that's what caused it to stop working, but that's the only change I made to it before it stopped showing up on any computers) and refused to show up on any computers despite my countless hours spent doing everything I could across multiple computers to try and recover it. I opened up a support ticket with LaCie and they sent me a new one free of charge once they verified it in fact wasn't working. I'm just going to chalk that 'broken' one up to a dud unit, because no manufacturing process is perfect and there will never be a 100% product success/working rate in anything.

Overall Review: For what it's worth, I used to have the slide-action Sandisk USB Titanium Cruzer, which was also an excellent thumb drive. Only problem is that I'm not totally certain they make it anymore and it had some flaws after a few years worth of use (but then again, that long of a lifespan for a USB drive on your keychain is admirable). My expectation is that this drive will be around as long as 16GB is still a decent amount of space, which should be probably at least another 5-10 years, I'd imagine. As such, I don't expect this drive will ever break.

All around great drive!

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 2TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive
Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 2TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive

Pros: Drive works very well! The LEDs aren't insanely bright (in fact, they're the perfect intensity). My drive didn't really get that warm even after constantly loading data onto it for three hours, your mileage may vary though. What I thought was cool is how the drive turns off automatically when the USB cable has been disconnected from the computer for about ten seconds or so. The drive is also quiet (see other thoughts for more info). It has the ability to upgrade to different interfaces, which is why I bought it. I highly recommend this drive!

Cons: None. I haven't used the software so I can't comment on that.

Overall Review: Transfer speeds are what you'd expect for USB 2.0 (when it's on that interface). When my laptop was in low-power mode (unplugged), I was getting about 20 MB/s in writing data to the drive. Also, as far as I'm aware, if you want the LED capacity gauge to work, you can't really remove the drive software or format the drive because that'll remove the necessary bits that interface with that. About the noise (well, lack thereof), I cannot hear the drive when my room's ceiling fan is on low speed and the drive is 3 feet away from me. You CAN barely hear the drive start up when you first plug-in it to the wall, but otherwise it's all good! Thank you FedEx for getting it here a day ahead of schedule!

Works Perfect

Seagate FreeAgent Go 320GB USB 2.0 2.5" External Hard Drive ST903203FDA2E1-RK Red
Seagate FreeAgent Go 320GB USB 2.0 2.5" External Hard Drive ST903203FDA2E1-RK Red

Pros: works just fine. not loud or anything! usb cable length is decent, but if you're planning on using this with a desktop you MAY want to look into getting a longer cable for convenience's sake.

Cons: none at all.

Overall Review: if you buy another (longer) cable, you need to get one with a 5-pin mini USB connector, *NOT* micro USB.

Great little drive.

Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420ASG 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive with G-Force Protection Bare Drive
Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420ASG 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive with G-Force Protection Bare Drive

Pros: Great drive thus far in my usage. I came off of a 320GB/7200RPM/16MB WD drive (the model without the gravity/fall sensor like this drive has) because I needed more space and this fit the bill. At first, I was a little bit nervous about changing HDD brands, because I was fine with the noise output of my 'old' WD 320GB drive but at the same time WD currently doesn't make a 500GB 2.5" drive at 7200RPM, so I decided to purchase this and I'm glad I did. Before, I had always kind of assumed Seagate drives put out more noise compared to WD drives based on my experience with the respective brands' desktop drives, but this drive doesn't seem any noisier than my previous 320GB/7200RPM WD drive was. I can hear it seek sometimes, but you may not be able to depending on your laptop's design, I suppose. Performance seems the same, too, I suppose because this drive and my previous WD both have 16MB buffers and spin at the same RPMs. See other thoughts.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: This drive has the built-in gravity/fall sensor (as denoted by the 'G' at the end of the model number), which enables the drive to detect a sudden drop and park the read/write heads off of the spinning platters on which your data resides. Also, for what it's worth, I installed this drive in a Dell Latitude E6400. Also Newegg packaged the drive perfectly!

Works excellently with Tomato!

ASUS WL-500GP V2 802.11b/g Multi-Functional Wireless Router with x2 USB Plug-N-Share hard drive function and Print Server Function

Pros: Loaded the teddy bear mod of Tomato onto this router and it operates flawlessly. The router is stable (with Tomato, at least), doesn't produce near as much heat as my old WRT54GL did, looks pretty good, has two USB ports, etc..

Cons: None. I didn't even log-in to the router when it had the stock firmware on it, so I can't comment on that.

Overall Review: If it makes a difference, with the Teddy Bear mod of Tomato (which enables USB support-- something 'regular' Tomato doesn't have), my Canon i960 printer was recognized by the firmware and all I had to do was tell Windows where the printer was and it works without problems. Secondly, the USB hard drive transfer speeds over 802.11g are kinda slow (read: 1-2MB/s). Apparently most USB routers are this way though. I can't load a ~4GB+ 'backup' of one of 'my' 720p movies and it be watchable, but a ~2GB file plays fine over the network. the external HDD I used was a WD 640GB Elements. Also my Sandisk Titanium USB key was recognized, too. Also the orange LEDs aren't that bad, in my opinion. I have this router in my bedroom and I don't think they're too bright, certainly not bright enough to light up a dark room. Not saying the other reviewers are wrong, perhaps ASUS put in low-intensity LEDs in a revision.
