ASRock Z77 Pro4-M LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
ASRock Z77 Pro4-M LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: - mATX form factor - Plentiful onboard SATA ports (four 6Gb/s and four 3Gb/s) - Wide-ranging support for different RAM speeds - Many options for overclocking

Cons: - HD audio header is right next to the PCI 3.0 16x port, which makes me wonder if a graphics card will block it. - The right-angle SATA cable the board comes with was difficult to make work in my situation. Not a biggie. - Orientation of the onboard SATA3 ports can make for awkward cabling. - Driver disc was not compatible with Windows8 64-bit. I had to download everything from ASRock's website

Overall Review: I'm using this board to replace my ancient Pentium 4 office rig. The form factor worked with my idea of making a small and quiet box, but also one capable of packing a performance punch. The good assortment of expansion ports also helped to make this one the winner in my decision as I'll be adding a graphics card later. Still 5-eggs, because everything works and no compromises needed to be made (so far). Works Well, Except After S3 Sleep

AVerMedia AVerTVHD Duet - PCTV Tuner (A188 - White Box)
AVerMedia AVerTVHD Duet - PCTV Tuner (A188 - White Box)

Pros: The card works well in Media Center when it comes to viewing and recording ATSC HDTV coming in from the antenna. Picture quality is top-notch. Sensitivity seems to be high as I can pick up all the channels I expect plus some I didn't expect. The dual tuners work perfectly so that I can record/watch two shows at once.

Cons: If the computer ever enters S3 sleep mode it will come back telling me that there's no tuner installed. Even a reboot won't fix it. The only solution is to shutdown the computer entirely and unplug it for about 10 minutes. This can be highly annoying as you might imagine.

Overall Review: I was previously using the Avermedia Combo PCIe tuner, which worked like a dream. I could put my HTPC into S3 sleep when not in use, it would wake up for scheduled recordings and then put itself back to sleep when done. It was perfect for keeping things quiet and keeping power usage at a minimum. That is not possible with this card, but I want dual tuners and the price is right. With a few system tweaks as well as undervolting and underclocking I've found a middle ground I can live with.

Plug and Play

D-Link GO-SW-8G Unmanaged Gigabit Desktop Switch
D-Link GO-SW-8G Unmanaged Gigabit Desktop Switch

Pros: Simple setup - just plugged in some cables. It's supposedly "green", so you can feel good about that. I bought this with a really great deal that was impossible to pass up. Most importantly, my office computer and HTPC are now connected via this switch at gigabit speeds.

Cons: None so far, but I haven't done any stress tests either.

Overall Review: I needed a switch, preferred gigabit, and I found this one at the right price. I'm happy thus far.

Awesome for HTPC

GIGABYTE Radeon HD 4550 512MB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Graphics Card GV-R455D3-512I
GIGABYTE Radeon HD 4550 512MB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Graphics Card GV-R455D3-512I

Pros: My main purpose for this card is for Vista Media Center and it's everything you want for an HTPC video card. Combined with my Gigabyte 780G-based HTPC and Athlon 5000+ processor I get full vector adaptive deinterlacing and inverse telecine of QAM 1080i video coming from the cable company. In other words, the best video quality possible. Plus, this card is passive and hence silent.

Cons: The case temperatures have edged up a bit, which is to be expected with a passive card, but well worth it and nothing to be concerned about. I just need some better air flow in my case.

Overall Review: Totally worth it for the price. If you're a stickler for video quality in your HTPC then this card is what you want.

Works Extremely Well!

AVerMedia AVerTV Combo PCIe MCE ATSC/NTSC/QAM Tuner Card w/MCE Remote & L-P Bracket 7 95522 96066 5 PCI-Express x1 Interface
AVerMedia AVerTV Combo PCIe MCE ATSC/NTSC/QAM Tuner Card w/MCE Remote & L-P Bracket 7 95522 96066 5 PCI-Express x1 Interface

Pros: It's worked perfectly since the day I plugged it in with full 1080i and 720p coming in clear as a bell and without any stuttering whatsoever. With the beta QAM drivers I can get everything being sent out in the clear from the cable company in Vista Media Center. This is the most you can hope for!

Cons: I can tell that my case temperature edges up a bit when in use, but nothing to be concerned about.

Overall Review: I wanted a tuner card that gave me the choice between OTA HDTV and QAM HDTV from the cable company in Vista Media Center. This card does it without a hitch and much less expensively than the other well known network based tuner solution.

Can We Get a Working Pair?

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X2048-6400C4
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X2048-6400C4

Pros: It does run at 4-4-4-12 as advertised.

Cons: My first pair had a bad stick. I sent that single one back to Corsair and they kindly sent me a new pair...one of which is bad again. My system will not post with that bad stick installed. Luckily, I kept the good one from the first package so I have a full two gigs of working RAM, though they're not 'matched', whatever that means.

Overall Review: Corsair's got great customer service as they swapped out the RAM with very little hassle. The fact that I even had to swap it out and that I barely came to a satisfactory conclusion means I'll try a different brand in the future.
