Great drive, good price, excellent performance

Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000BHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Enterprise Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000BHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Enterprise Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Love Velociraptors...nice fast drives and the price has been slowly falling. Good return policies from WD given the price. WD makes good stuff and they tend to stand behind it in the enterprise space. I've been buying their drives for about a decade now, been largely happy with their service. These 10K drives (along with others like the Seagate Saavio) are built for NAS/SMB file server market. Install a bunch in a decent NAS...format & burn in...then kick back & enjoy the performance. They have an excellent price/performance ratio for the amount of data they can store.

Cons: Not really a con here, but these drives are not nearly as fast as a good SSD. They are also a bit noisy and generate a fair amount of heat. Give them a few minutes to cool off when swapping them out! Also be sure your enclosure can keep your drives cool. Heat is a drive killer! Check the manufacturer's compatibility list. Something like a QNAP SS-839 might be a great fit for this product, but the drive isn't listed as compatible yet.

Overall Review: I'd like to respond to the previous review as well. I had a facepalm moment reading it and that needs to be resolved... 1. Don't buy a 10K FILE SERVER drive for a laptop. I know that NewEgg puts every 2.5" drive in the "laptop hard drives" category. I'll admit that's misleading, and it's long overdue for a change. But...dude...what were you thinking? I'm beginning to suspect that they made these drives thicker just to prevent people (like you) from installing them in laptops. 2. Don't post a negative review based on your lack of diligence. That's slander. Admit that you made a mistake and point that out to other potential buyers. These drives are a good product, with published specs and many reviews out on the interwebs. 3. Don't rate yourself a '5' on tech knowledge when you clearly don't have a clue. You bought a data insurance policy when the drive has a five-year no questions asked return policy directly from WD? 4. Perhaps use your mad tech skillz along with a spell-checking app. "Thinker" is what you should be..."thicker" would be more appropriate to describe a HDD in a review title.

Avoid these drives

WD My Passport Essential 320GB USB 2.0 2.5" Portable Hard Drive WDBAAA3200ARD-NESN Real Red
WD My Passport Essential 320GB USB 2.0 2.5" Portable Hard Drive WDBAAA3200ARD-NESN Real Red

Pros: Small size.

Cons: Totally proprietary design. Small USB connector falls out at the slightest provocation. Hard drive is removable with a bit of work, but it has a proprietary USB interface. That's right, no standard connector. So if you might want to use this enclosure with a standard 2.5" laptop drive you are out of luck. Furthermore, this unusual choice of hardware requires that the required WD driver must be installed on EVERY DIFFERENT COMPUTER you use this on.

Overall Review: Buy the Elements series instead. If you value design over function and prefer hardware designed to be disposable, this is a fine choice for you.

This router is a winner

BUFFALO WHR-HP-G54 802.11b/g Wireless-G High Power Router up to 54Mbps/ Open Source DD-WRT Support
BUFFALO WHR-HP-G54 802.11b/g Wireless-G High Power Router up to 54Mbps/ Open Source DD-WRT Support

Pros: Installed Tomato firmware on three of these & set up a WPS network in a few hours. Superb coverage, stable firmware. A few slow connections, but that's to be expected in any new setup. The experience over LinkSys & DLink is profound...it just worked right and keeps working. No reboots or anything pedestrian like that.

Cons: I guess I'd prefer that it came with Tomato...they're a bit pricey for a premium 802.11g router. Maybe some pre-N compatibility?

Overall Review: Tomato and Buffalo are a winning combination. It's just a solid router tha works. Maybe you'll get better speed with something else, but I'm looking for stable with my business clients. You can't go wrong with Buffalo/Tomato/DD WRT.
