Top Notch

Western Digital WD Green WD6400AACS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital WD Green WD6400AACS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I have both the SE16 and GP versions of this drive, and they both perform very well, with very little noise. The GP is a little slower according to Vista's experience index, but I can't tell the difference in everyday use. The GP is a little quieter than the SE16.

Cons: Nothing bad comes to mind.

Good HTPC card w/ limitations

MSI GeForce GT 430 (Fermi) 1GB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Low Profile Video Card N430GT-MD1G/LP
MSI GeForce GT 430 (Fermi) 1GB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Low Profile Video Card N430GT-MD1G/LP

Pros: Low profile, and low power consumption card with enough processing power to handle all of my HTPC needs.

Cons: This card has a 64-bit memory bus. Why? Most other GT430's use a 128-bit bus. It doesn't really affect HTPC use, but it dramatically limits the card for gaming. The fan is noisy, and is always at full speed. It produces too much heat to be fanless and low profile.

Overall Review: I replaced the cooler with a spare heatsink that I modified to fit my low profile case. After some load testing, I added a quiet 70mm fan. If this card had come with a quiet cooler, I would have rated it higher.

Great for Media Center

Ceton InfiniTV 4 PCIe - Quad-tuner Card for Watching Digital Cable TV on the PC, PCI-Express x1 Interface
Ceton InfiniTV 4 PCIe - Quad-tuner Card for Watching Digital Cable TV on the PC, PCI-Express x1 Interface

Pros: Excellent product. Once it's up and running, the picture quality and channel response time is great. I would (and have) recommend this product to a friend. Instructions are very good. The bundled list of cable company CableCard support lines was a huge time saver. Ceton obviously knows that your cable company will be the weakest link.

Cons: Comcast is a pain. Initial setup wasn't as painful as I expected, thanks to Ceton's bundled listing of support numbers. However, Comcast managed to register my card improperly, which generated service and billing headaches.

Use the AC Cable

SeaSonic SS-750KM3 750W ATX12V V2.3 / EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready
SeaSonic SS-750KM3 750W ATX12V V2.3 / EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: I have two of these power supplies. I've always used high quality PSU's, but this is hands-down the best one I have ever owned. It offers plenty of power and ample outlets, while remaining cool and silent (I don't even use the hybrid fan mode).

Cons: When I first used this power supply, I was very upset. It performed well, but emitted a high frequency buzz. I was ready to rip it out of my PC, and return it. That is until I figured out the problem...(see other thoughts).

Overall Review: If you have a problem with buzz or whine, use the power cable that the PSU comes with. It eliminated the problem for me. The new cable is about 50% thicker than the old one I was using. I don't know if the new cable is shielded, or if it's just higher quality, but it defiantly made a difference.

Simple SATA Expansion Card

HighPoint Rocket 620 PCI-Express 2.0 x1 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card
HighPoint Rocket 620 PCI-Express 2.0 x1 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Pros: I received this card with a 3TB WD hard drive. It is currently being used to interface a DVD drive in my computer, as I've run out of motherboard sata ports. The DVD drive works just like it was connected to the motherboard's south-bridge ports. It's very compact, and comes with a low-profile adapter.

Cons: My only complaint is that my system will hang if I select the connected DVD drive from the BIOS' F12 boot menu. If I set the boot order in the BIOS manually, booting from the DVD drive works as expected.

Overall Review: The board has it's own AHCI BIOS, while necessary, slows down boot time.

Nice, Large Drive

Seagate Desktop HDD ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Seagate Desktop HDD ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Large, fast, low vibration, and reasonably quiet. Low power consumption, once the drive is in idle and the heads are parked. Head parking is well managed, and not excessive. Overall, a good mix of speed and capacity. I have two of these drive, and don't have any problems with reliability.

Cons: It makes an audible screech when going in and out of low power mode. Power consumption is a little high when the drive is active.

Overall Review: I use these drives for low i/o storage. Zero problems so far.
