Plays Everything
Pros: It has played everything I've tossed at it so far, DVD+R, single and dual layer, MP-3 MPEG 4 and all standard DVD's, CD's and CDR's. I have a three hundred dollar Pioneer that won't do that. There are some nice features in the advanced setup menu not typically found on DVD players. You can totally readjust all the video perameters (sharp, hue, contrast, etc.) for DVD viewing without messing with your TV settings. This player contains a nice array of output choices on the back panel that will allow all hookup choices. If you have any difficulty whatsoever, there is a tech phone number supplied and you will get a tech on the phone rather quickly.
Cons: The tech you get on the phone will probably learn more about the functions from you. The players enclosure and tray are flimsy as is the remote, typical of an inexpensive player. Treat it kindly.
Overall Review: In my experience, the inexpensive players have better read capability that the expensive players. I have no idea what the reason for this is. ASTAR obviously put a good laser in this player and cut a few corners in other places. There are some very cool perameters in the set up menu. Definately use an HDMI cable for the full upconverting experience. Signal is still important. It will not polish a poor quality recording as nothing will. Upconverting may be even more revealing to poor DVD production. I'm happy with and I'm keeping it.
Steer Clear
Pros: none
Cons: All Coasters
Overall Review: If you own a Pioneer burner you have my sympathy. If it's a DVR-110D DO NOT purchase the Ridata discs, even though Pioneer and Ridata say theyre compatible but they do not finalize. Incidentally I had the same problem with Verbatim in this burner.
Do Not Purchase
Pros: It would be pointless trying to pro a product that doesn't function at all.
Cons: I received a brick of coasters and wasted much time.
Overall Review: I can't understand why a company would ship such a flawed product. Maybe they don't want to be in business very long. I'm going through the RMA process. The company only offers replacement. If they replace bad product with bad product what did I gain. I will purchase Riteck Ridata ever again. I can't afford the waste of time that bad discs are.
The One I Chose
Pros: Among the best picture quality LCD TV's. Nice array of inputs, innovative sound technology and light weight. All for $395 (not from New Egg). It's funny how we can be "brand name" oriented but Sony has been a leader in TV picture quality since the Trinitron. They don't come cheap but they have the best quality picture. I was a bit leery about the not well known brands that are priced at $349 or less. LG has made a name for itself in all facets of electronics in a fairly short period of time and that is done through innovation and customer satisfaction. For me they are a major up front brand name. They proved it again with this TV.
Cons: I was disappointed that New Egg didn't offer a lower price on this TV. I purchased through a different online source for $105 less making it a great buy. When you can buy a Sony Bravia for $499 why look any further?
Overall Review: I agree with comments made about Aspect Ratio. I would like to add what I've learned through research. Static Aspect Ratio (typically the lower number usually between 1000:1 and 2000:1) is the difference between white and black in the images color spectrum. Dynamic Aspect Ratio (the higher number, 10000:1 to 30000:1) is in reference to the backlighting. Typically fluorescent backlighting is used in less expensive sets which is the grey instead of black when no picture is displayed. I didn't necessarily notice a huge difference in picture quality between 1000:1 and 30000:1, but 3000:1 to 10000:1 is an amazing difference. This LG @ 30000:1 has a picture quality that is equal to or surpasses the Sony Bravia.
Over Rated
Pros: Compact and easy setup. More powerful and better sounding than any other system of its size. Decent systems for those who want to rid themselves of boat anchors and tombstones cluttering the living space. The simulated surround from the 2 small speakers is enjoyable but will not rival a multi speaker setup.
Cons: WAY over priced. The cheap DVD drive that Bose chose to use will fail in a short period of time. Bose offers a flat repair rate of $125 plus shipping but that is expensive for the cheap DVD drive to be replaced. There is no HDMI connection on the series 2 and you will not achieve upconversion.
Overall Review: Bose has introduced the 321 Series 3 which adds an HDMI connection and upconverts to 1080P. You'll drop a grand to achieve it. The series 2 prices are still over $700 so Bose is charging $300 for an upconverting DVD player. You just bought a Blue Ray. I would have liked to see he series 2 price drop to around $600. Bose sound quality is better than most small systems but not necessarily worth the inflated price tag. It won't blow your skirt up.
Check Compatibility
Pros: They are dependable discs for my drive and they're among the most reasonably priced.
Cons: There may be an occasional coaster with no way of determining disc, hardware or software fault.
Overall Review: I suffer as much frustration over failed burns as all reviewers. Upon researching media issues I learned there are compatibility issues. No one has pin pointed why these issues occur but CD/DVD drive manufacturers do test their drives with different media and offer a list of the proven media. This is why different reviewers like one brand over another. There are a few reviewers that state the brand name and model of their drive which is helpful. Visit the website of the manufacturer of your drive and search your model number. They will provide a list of compatible media saving you the trouble of trial and error. The Pioneer drive in my Sony Vaio listed Ridata media high on the list of compatible media whereas I could not achieve a single successful burn from Verbatim which I've had luck with in the past. I've achieved perfect burns from the Ridata discs in my drive. There is still the occasional coaster for whatever undetermined reason that it may happen with all media.
