Most Favorable Review

Somewhat misleading.

GIGABYTE GA-790XTA-UD4 AM3 AMD 790X SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-790XTA-UD4 AM3 AMD 790X SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Good specs, fairly low price, "future-proof" if there is such a thing. SATA 3.0 and USB 3.0 will be nice for when I get compatible devices. BIOS options are extensive. PCI Express slots are placed a healthy distance from eachother, much better for people running two cards.

Cons: Gigabyte's website lists the new 6-core processors as being compatible with this board - THEY ARE NOT. They require a beta BIOS flash, which requires processor already compatible with this board. Be sure you have another AM3 processor available to do this if you are getting a 6-core to put in this. If you don't know what you are doing in terms of a BIOS flash, just don't get a 6-core period. The DIMM slots are arranged a bit too close to the processor for my liking. Some aftermarket CPU coolers might not fit on this board due to the placement.

Overall Review: Other than Gigabyte providing some very misleading information, I'm pretty happy with this board. Not had any problems with it yet.

Most Critical Review

Pretty good, but could be better.

Mad Catz Saitek Pro Flight X-55 Rhino H.O.T.A.S. (Hands on Throttle and Stick) System for PC
Mad Catz Saitek Pro Flight X-55 Rhino H.O.T.A.S. (Hands on Throttle and Stick) System for PC

Pros: Feature rich, the software allows for a lot of customization. Loads of buttons - you should never run out. Green backlights are nice. Easy to adjust the feel of the joystick and throttle. The grip areas have a nice feel to them. Not sure if it's something that is sprayed on the plastic or the way the plastic was molded, but either way, it's nice. Drivers/software are not included in the box, they're obtained from the website. I kind of like this, as it ensures everyone is using the most up-to-date drivers/software.

Cons: Oh jeez, where do I start. Don't get me wrong, I'm still exceptionally pleased with what I got, but the price tag is outrageous considering what you get. 1. Absolutely no documentation whatsoever. I had to go to Youtube to figure out how to change the spring because I was afraid I was going to break it. I had to go to Youtube to figure out how to run the software (it only places a link on your desktop - nothing in the Taskbar or the start menu). I had to go to Youtube to figure out how to customize the joystick. The software itself is nice, but, yeah, no documentation. 2. The hats are all loose and wobbly. I don't really think it's a structural flaw or anything, or indicative of weakness, but for what I paid, I'd have liked something that feels a bit more solid. 3. Toggles on the throttle are not toggles, they are momentary switches like the ones on the bottom. Not a big deal but I really would have liked the feel of a toggle switch. 4. This really needs to be advertised as requiring a powered USB hub. Ghosted terribly in Elite: Dangerous to the point where it was unplayable. 5. Ergonomics are not the best. I have pretty big hands and it's still a bit of a stretch for me to reach the grey hat (the only one I really use, thankfully). If I had to use the other two hats on the joystick it would be a lot more of a pain. You do have move your entire hand up from the rest position to reach the hats. Not a big deal, TBH, but I could see how it might be an issue in some games where the hats are used "on-the-fly."

Overall Review: It's a decent joystick/throttle combination, but it's definitely not worth the price. Unfortunately there's really not much, if any competition in this price range with a similar level of features, so this is what we're stuck with. It's good quality, just not the kind you'd expect with the price tag attached to it. Four stars off the bat for not being pleasantly surprised by what I got. One star knocked off for the price/quality disparity. Another star knocked off for the combination of other general issues I listed. I gave it one star back because despite all this, it's still a decent product of acceptable quality, and you'll have a lot of fun with it. With a better price tag this could have been a four or even five star review. You just expect a lot more for this kind of price.

Excellent Cooler

CORSAIR Hydro Series H90 High Performance Water/Liquid CPU Cooler. 140mm
CORSAIR Hydro Series H90 High Performance Water/Liquid CPU Cooler. 140mm

Pros: Absolutely no complaints about this. Solid construction, easy to install. I haven't seen my temps hit 35C yet, even in newer video games, on an i7-4771. Used AS Ceramique - so not even high end thermal paste and things are running pretty cool. The fan is quiet, a big draw of the 140mm size. Definitely does what it is advertised to do.

Cons: Uh... cheap pre-applied thermal paste that comes on every cooler, stock or aftermarket? I mean, if you've got enough savvy to be buying a good aftermarket cooler like this, you're probably not using stock paste anyway.

Overall Review: Can't really go wrong, here. Good product.

Does the job

Rosewill RHB-320 - 7-Port USB 2.0 / 1.1 Hub with Power Adapter
Rosewill RHB-320 - 7-Port USB 2.0 / 1.1 Hub with Power Adapter

Pros: Does what it advertises. Got it to prevent my Saitek X-55 HOTAS from ghosting something terrible in Elite: Dangerous. Absolutely no incidents of ghosting since going through this. The housing is solid and well constructed, and the stand is nice, although the unit doesn't really weigh enough to counteract any cable strain that might be pulling against it, so I'm not really sure what the point of it is.

Cons: It's really more of a four-port USB hub, with three additional ports accessible when you disassemble part of the housing and expose the chipboard. Not really an issue if it is going to be tucked away and hidden, but if it's sitting out in the open, or it is being used in a very dirty/high-dust environment, that might be something to take into consideration.

Overall Review: Four stars because I'm not really a fan of the design. Having to remove part of the housing and expose the insides to access the last three ports is a poor design choice. Other than that it's a good product and I would recommend it. Other reviews have indicated that this will NOT charge USB devices if it is not plugged into a computer as well. My experience indicates this is not the case - my joystick/throttle light up when plugged into the hub alone, and my phone will charge just fine when it is not connected to my computer.

Arctic Silver CMQ2-25G Céramique 2 Tri-Linear Ceramic Thermal Compound
Arctic Silver CMQ2-25G Céramique 2 Tri-Linear Ceramic Thermal Compound

Pros: Large amount. I didn't even realize I'd ordered the 25g tube until it came today. Should last me awhile, so, there's that at least. Ceramic means it's not electrically conductive or capacitive, so it's forgiving of mistakes. The price is great. When all my parts come in I plan to install it right from the get-go, so I won't really have a before/after temperature comparison, but there's plenty of reviews here already attesting to its ability to drop processor temps.

Cons: Arrived with the tip broken off. The entire syringe had just been tossed in a box with several heavy items, with only a couple deflated strips of air packing thrown in on top. Not going to knock off a star for that, though, since that's not really a product quality issue. From reading reviews here this seems to be a common issue. Newegg customer service is shipping me a replacement, no hassle at all, so I've got no complaints there. One of the reasons I keep shopping here is because even when I have an experience like this, customer service is right on it, and quickly.

Overall Review: It's ceramic, not silicone, so expect to have a little more difficulty spreading it out. Like any thermal paste, just a thin layer will do - but unlike silicone paste it's not going to spread out on its own.

Bad sectors popping up everywhere.

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 ST1000DM005/HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 ST1000DM005/HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: High capacity at a good price.

Cons: Worked great right up until it left the warranty period - then bad sectors started popping up everywhere. I am lucky I caught this before it spread to my important backups - pictures, writings, etc. Tried to play a few steam games that were not working right...finally traced it back to this hard drive. Three chkdsk's later and bad sectors are still popping up all over the place. Luckily the only data I lost was easily replaceable items. Samsung wants me to run a couple diagnostic tools that require floppy drives, something I haven't owned for about five years, long after they went obsolete. I can barely manage to find my way around the website as it looks like the English version was run through an automatic translator rather than written by a native speaker.

Overall Review: Next time I'll stick with a higher-costing, but more familiar brand. I regret stepping outside my "proven" list of manufacturer's just to save a few bucks.
