Fast, tough drive.

Seagate Cheetah 15K.7 ST3300657SS 300GB 15000 RPM 16MB Cache SAS 6Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
Seagate Cheetah 15K.7 ST3300657SS 300GB 15000 RPM 16MB Cache SAS 6Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Okay this is a VERY fast drive. As others have said, you do NOT use this for storage. You use it as a system boot drive, or in cases where disk performance MATTERS. My current Cheetahs were originally a server boot array. However, now that the machine it's in rocks an SSD they have been relegated to drives for my SQL Server implementation (one drive for the data file, another for the log file). Having used high speed SCSI drives for years, I was pleasantly surprised at how quiet and cool these things run. I have mine in an un-soundproofed case not 3 feet from my head and I can't even hear it.

Cons: Wish I could get 15K in multi-TB sizes. But oh well. SSDs have wholly surpassed these drives in terms of performance, SOMEWHAT diminishing their value.

Overall Review: As others have noted. If you're looking for bulk storage drives, you don't want these. Look elsewhere. If you're in a write-heavy environment (where you can burn out an SSD), consider these drives (and their 600GB cousins) as an alternative.

Will NEVER buy another Asus product

ASUS P6T WS PRO LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Core i7 / Xeon Intel Motherboard
ASUS P6T WS PRO LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Core i7 / Xeon Intel Motherboard

Pros: Board has all the features I required.

Cons: Asus technical support is ATROCIOUS! The board I got was DOA. Sent it in for an RMA. They "fixed" it and sent it back. Still DOA. Sent it back for REPLACEMENT. Due to THEIR bungling it entered the regular RMA channel again. Rather than just fix it IN-HOUSE, they're going to send it back to me AGAIN and make me send it back through the proper channels. A system that was supposed to be put together 2 MONTHS ago is now going to linger for at least another 3-5 weeks waiting on these jokers. I had a manager talk to me twice. Each time he gave me his "direct extension". Yet when called, that extension rings through to voicemail on a service that reports that that particular extension is NOT set up for VM services, which then kicks you to the general support queue. This manager, the second time, tried to assure me that I hadn't called HIS extension or that I'd misheard it (never mind that I have software with all the information sitting open on the screen in front of me). RIDICUL

Overall Review: Rating should be zero stars. But the review doesn't allow for that. I've sworn by Asus products for a good chunk of the last 20 years. I've ignored equivalent products at lower prices from other vendors due to Asus' track record. The fact that their support division is this helpless and incompetent is just mind-blowing to me. It is also MASSIVE incentive for me to locate a suitable alternate supply channel in the future. In short, if everything runs right, Asus is great. The second you have a problem, you have a REAL problem. Asus itself. And there's no help or solution for it.

Big honkin' hard drive.

Pros: BIG. Replacing 3 smaller drives. Still have 2x the space.

Cons: Wish it was SSD space. But hey, can't have everything.

Overall Review: Still a bit pricey (caught it on sale). But the price is slowly coming down to "very reasonable". This is my first non-WesternDigital drive in a long, long LONG time. And, thus far, I'm very pleased with it.

Dead-dumb simple backups

Acronis True Image Home 2012 (DVD)
Acronis True Image Home 2012 (DVD)

Pros: Had malware loaded by a rogue ad network (from a trusted site) blow through all my protection a few months back. Completely hosed my setup. I'd kinda put off backing up my crufty setup (because it was crufty. Well, a fevered late night reloading everything and I was able to ready to make a system image. ATI is stupidly simple to get this done with. Boot off the disk, and you have all the options on where to place the backup. I just let it run, fell on my face, and when I woke up a couple hours later it was done.

Cons: That I was too stupid/lazy to have done this previously

Overall Review: Depending on how crazy your setup is, it can be anywhere from a couple hours to a couple DAYS to reload from scratch, depending on how hard you push yourself and your system. With ATI, it's just a couple button clicks and a few hours of waiting while the system does all the work. Which would YOU prefer?

Having good luck thus far

WD My Book Live 2TB Personal Cloud Storage
WD My Book Live 2TB Personal Cloud Storage

Pros: Having good luck with this product thus far. Works with my Blu-Ray media streamer. Fast access times. Not doing anything exotic with my setup, so it pretty much just dropped in and "worked".

Cons: Needed a firmware update out of the box. Firmware update takes a while.

Overall Review: Had an old WD NetCenter go belly-up on me (first WD product of any kind to actually die on me) and was in the market for a replacement. This product is MUCH faster than the NetCenter ever was and integrates well on my network. Wish I'd actually bought it through Newegg instead of off the shelf. But I needed the thing "Right Now".

What good is a RAID drive if you can only buy one?

Pros: nice drive

Cons: Need multiple drives for RAID and limited to buying one.
