Loving this processor!

Intel Xeon E3-1271 v3 Haswell 3.6GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1150 80W Server Processor BX80646E31271V3
Intel Xeon E3-1271 v3 Haswell 3.6GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1150 80W Server Processor BX80646E31271V3

Pros: Stupid fast. I bought this to put in a video converter/editor box. I'm consistently getting ~250 fps using FFmpeg (x264 + libfdk_aac codecs, CRF 20, veryfast preset, 128k audio) on a Debian 9 box. While encoding, only uses about 1/2 of the capability (htop/top/uptime shows around 400% utilization with 800% max due to threads/cores). This same box is also running another Linux VM using VirtualBox. An old Core2Duo E6400 was running the VM before and was hitting 150-190% usage more often is using about 10% on this Xeon. Used it for a bit with the stock cooler (saw idle temps around 45 C, peak under 60 C still), but installed a Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO and temps are even lower ("peak" is under 45 C). I've not been able to truly push it to 800% utilization yet using FFmpeg.

Cons: Doesn't make me breakfast in the morning?

1TB Hitachi for NAS/DVR

Hitachi (0A38876) 1TB 32MB Cache 7200RPM SATA2 (3.0Gbps) 3.5" (Heavy Duty) Hard Drive NAS, RAID, CCTV DVR, PC/Mac - OEM w/ 1 Year Warranty

Pros: Drive is 1TB, works, Hitachi.

Cons: My only con with this drive is the read head is relatively loud when being accessed. Not loud enough to hear it in the other room, but you will hear it if you are in the same room (and it's quiet of course).

Overall Review: Bought this drive to replace a WD Green that was running nearly 24/7 for a few years as a DIY NAS/DVR running Ubuntu and MythTV software.

ASUS M5A97 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 + SB 950 USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
ASUS M5A97 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 + SB 950 USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Pros: Asus motherboard. Haven't had any problems with this. Fast SATA connections, works out of the box with Linux (Ubuntu 14.04). BIOS is very easy to update, supports the 1055t with 125 watt TDP.

Cons: Northbridge heatsink gets a little toasty, but that is what heatsinks were designed to do. "Only" 6 SATA ports - but if you account one for eSATA, one for an optical drive, that leaves only 4. I had to combine two IDE partitions into a larger SATA drive anyways, so I will be using all 6 SATA ports soon (just need to find more rails for my case). Motherboard does supports multiple GPUs, but from some reading after the fact, it only supports it in CrossfireX configuration, and the secondary only at PCI Express x4. I had two graphics cards I was wanting to use (one CrossfireX compatible, one not) and could not use both. My best guess is that the motherboard recognized one couldn't be used in CrossfireX, and just flat-out disabled the non-capable one. Couldn't even get video out of it while in the BIOS. It works 100% stand-alone, so I know it isn't a bad video card. A modern video card that is wider (i.e., for a heat sink and fan) than a single slot at any point will overlap and make the top-most PCI-Express x1 slot impossible to use unless your device is shorter than the connector itself. Case fan connectors are located near the edge of the board, near the CPU socket and memory slots, and then another by the audio ports. This placement does not allow me to use my front hard drive fan without an extension to it or some other crazy configuration.

Overall Review: I know it seems like a lot of cons to this board. However, it was a very reasonable price at time of purchase and for a board that supports Linux natively, has a high CPU TDP (for the AMD 6-core 1055T), at least one full x16 slot, 6 SATA connectors, Gigabit ethernet, the capabilities out-weigh the smaller annoyances about this board.

WiFi

TP-LINK TL-WN881ND Wireless N300 PCI Express Adapter, 300 Mbps, w/ WPS Button, IEEE 802.1b/g/n, 64 / 128-bit WEP, WPA / WPA2, Plug & Play in Windows

Pros: Small, PCI express slot, two antennae, includes low-profile bracket, 802.11n. Works with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Linux without any issue.

Cons: Not terribly fast - but I'm fairly sure that this is a problem with my location of router and desktop more than anything.
