Pros: This drive is simple and elegant looking at the same time. It does not have a protruding bezel or off-color black that will clash with most true black colored cases. The physical dimensions of the drive are small , it does not sit deep into the 5.25 bay. For the aesthetically inclined--the bezel is textured perfectly to match the Antec P180B case. It sits flat in the 5.25 bay. The loading tray sounds very even and fluid when ejecting and loading. The loading tray doesn't appear cheap or overly flimsy. The gear mechanisms are nearly invisible and not easily seen. This drive has accepted every media type and brand I have used in it so far...Taiyo Yuden, VERBATIM, Memorex and TDK.

Cons: This drive is considerably louder during spin-up than a majority of drives I have used. Using Nero's Drivespeed utility remedies this. Not really a fault, but this drive has a green, round LED activity light. Personally, I like my LED'S rectangular in shape (I know, I'm a nitpicker!)

Overall Review: This is an OEM drive, so you will of course need your own data cable, mounting screws and third-party CD/DVD burning software (don't even think about using Microsoft's built-in cheese-ware). Even though there is alot of buzz surrounding the use of round IDE cables--it is not advised that you do. If you are at all concerned about reliable data transmission. Flat 80-pin ATA/133 data ribbon cables might not be as nice looking and undoubtedly impede some air flow, but the standard calls for cables to be flat and not rounded. Round cables are notoriously unreliable and can result in sporadic data errors prompting the user to believe it is the drives fault and not the cables. Play it safe and go flat, it is worth the peace of mind.

Eggcellent entry-level gaming notebook

Acer Laptop Aspire Intel Core i5 2nd Gen 2450M (2.50GHz) 4GB Memory 500GB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M 17.3" Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit V3-771G-6650

Pros: Dedicated GPU i5 processor 17.3" screen

Cons: Fingerprint magnet Somewhat loud optical drive

Overall Review: The 17.3" screen is bright and vibrant. It's not a Samsung screen nor is it HD but I knew this before buying it and I don't really care. For $600 you know some of the trimmings are going to get cut, so no HD screen with colors to die for, but the screen is more than adequate and has no distortions that I can see. The glossy screen is not the worst glossy screen I've seen, it's not nearly as glossy as some other lappies I have had. With the glossy display you get slightly better color intensity and contrast than a matte screen. This is always a subjective matter, some prefer the looks of a glossy screen some prefer matte screens. I prefer matte but that's just my preference. I have not had a chance to test the screen's visibilty in bright or sunny conditions so I cannot attest to its performance in that area. The exhaust fan, while not silent is realtively quiet for a notebook fan. It doesn't cycle on and off during normal operations but instead remains on and blows at a constant YET unobtrusive level. Most notable is that the exaust fan does not exhibit a high-frquency noise that many notebooks are plagued with. I have not put this notebook through its paces yet, so I cannot say how the fan performs during very intensive computing. The fan may ramp-up considerably. The build quality is nice but not outstanding, you would never want to drop it of course but the build quailty seems to be above par considering the price tag. I'd say barring any keyboard/key failures or LCD screen hinge issues this notebook should last a good 4 to 5 years with constant use. The touchpad is not the best I have seen, it's all one color (Piano Black) which makes it hard to differentiate between the Right and Left Touchpad buttons. The touchpad itself has an ever so slight traction to it which I find helpful especially if you tend to have oily fingers (snack foods) which registers touchpad movements accurately. The Keyboard keys have a "chiclet" style to them and have a nice tactile feel to them yet they are slightly more mushy than I tend to prefer, again, for $600 you don't get the Porche of notebooks so I am okay with that. Typing is not silent but not annoyingly loud either. There is no backlighting as another reviewer noted. I almost decided on another notebook becuase the Acer lacks the backlighting but at more than a 300 dollar difference I was willing to forego this feature. I/O Ports and USB ports are placed wisely, although I find that the USB ports are just a tad too close for bulky USB flash drives seated side-by-side. To be fair though almost all notebooks have this problem as space is at a premium. The DVD-RW drive is fine but I found when wiping the 5200RPM stock HDD and installing a fresh copy of Windows 7 that the optical drive tends to rattle the chassis of the entire notebook while spinning at high RPMs. Not a deal breaker though as I rarely use the optical drive but for those who watch DVDs or use their DVD-RW/ROM drives a lo

Entry-level surge suppressor at a resonable price

APC PRO7 6' 7 Outlets 1680 joule SurgeArrest
APC PRO7 6' 7 Outlets 1680 joule SurgeArrest

Pros: Conforms to UL 1449 standard. Has status LED's that indicate proper grounding and presence of active protection (a surge protector without these LED indicators is bad news becuase you never know if it is still protecting your comp.) Built-in circuit breaker will trip if your peripherals or computer develops a short.

Cons: This unit has a rather cheapish plastic look to it but it's not so bad that you'll feel you have to hide it under your desk. Although APC's packaging states there is room for transformer blocks it's a bit misleading because using a TB effectively blocks the sockets on either side of it. This is easily remedied by purchasing a power liberator cord for your transformer blocks. Beige color is a bit 1990's.

Overall Review: All-in-all this is a great buy for the amount of protection you get not to mention the piece of mind you get from knowing it is an APC unit. If you have an analog modem in your PC you will want to get the unit w/ phone protection. This unit has a decent Let Through Voltage Rating of 85 (lower is always better.) It has a right angle plug, a nice bonus!

These are dynamic little speakers

Logitech mm22 2.0CH Portable Speakers for iPod Model 970159-0403
Logitech mm22 2.0CH Portable Speakers for iPod Model 970159-0403

Pros: Price performance cannot be beat. The sound is spectacular for their size. Slick looking Logitech carrying case.

Cons: I wish the 3.5mm included jack cords were gold plated. I will probably buy my own 1/8" gold plated cords. I don't think this is a big issue considering the price of these great speakers.

Overall Review: I shop at many online vendor sites but Newegg is a path definer. They simply know how to treat their customers, bar none. As for the Logitech mm22's. These are dynamic little speakers. They're in league with speakers 3 times their price. They come with an awesome carrying case. Logitech and Newegg, Kudos!

Microsoft DG2-00002 Fingerprint Reader
Microsoft DG2-00002 Fingerprint Reader

Comments: This finger reader makes life a little easier once you have got it set up. It looks semi elegant a works as described. I use it mainly to log onto WinXP at the welcome screen. I won't be buying another one however, becuase DigitalPersona has decided to manufacturer these for Microsoft and this particular reader doesn't work with Firefox or Mozilla browsers. A big [-]Minus in my book. Considering the old DigitalPersona U.are.U readers had no problem with Firefox compatibility at all. It seems Microsoft has purposely hobbled this device on purpose. Therefore I will not be purchasing another one until they can sort out the incompatibility issue. 3 Stars***
