Hard To Beat The Price

HP EX920 M.2 512GB PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe 3D TLC NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) 2YY46AA#ABC
HP EX920 M.2 512GB PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe 3D TLC NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) 2YY46AA#ABC

Pros: On a fresh installation read and write speeds were almost spot on the manufacturer's claimed performance. Measured using AS SSD and Atto. Here a few months later with the SSD approximately 25% full, the read and write speeds have dropped a little bit. However considering that I've left the page file, hiberfil and windows system restore functional on the drive, the speeds are still acceptable in my opinion. We can benchmark all day, but the real difference is the response speed of this drive. I've been on traditional SATA III SSDs for several years, from single drives, to pairs of drives configured in RAID 0. The PCIe SSD takes another small leap over the SATA III SSD, but not as profound as moving from a traditional platter hard drive to a SSD. The other big benefit with a PCIe SSD is saving a small amount of space in your case as well as eliminating SATA cables for your primary drive.

Cons: None

Overall Review: Jared K. posted a helpful review and noted; Pros: - Super fast for a great price "Cons: - Firmware out of box has a bug where the temperature is always reported as 54 degrees Celsius but this was fixed with a firmware update - Support was ridiculously difficult to find since HP doesn't seem to even acknowledge this on their website, had to find the contractor or official distributors website for it Other Thoughts: Go here: https://www.multipointe.com/downloads/ These guys are the official partners for this drive. You can find drivers and the firmware update to fix the initial bugs" I wanted to help here and confirm that the firmware update does correct the "stuck" temperature probe. HOWEVER, and this is a big however, DO NOT use the SMI controller driver. That driver kills the performance of this SSD. The standard Microsoft nVME driver gives the performance that the manufacturer claims this SSD is capable of.

Initial Impressions

MSI Vigor GK50 Elite LL Mechanical Gaming Keyboard - Kailh Blue Switches (Clicky), Ergonomic Keycaps, Brushed Metal Finish, Anti-Slip Base, Per-Key RGB Mystic Light, USB 2.0 - Full-Sized
MSI Vigor GK50 Elite LL Mechanical Gaming Keyboard - Kailh Blue Switches (Clicky), Ergonomic Keycaps, Brushed Metal Finish, Anti-Slip Base, Per-Key RGB Mystic Light, USB 2.0 - Full-Sized

Pros: RGB lighting effects are numerous, effective and highly customizable. Key clack isn't quite as loud as Cherry Blues and the tone of the clack is noticeably different in a good way. If you are looking for a keyboard with a smaller footprint than the competition this one might fit the bill. Key presses IMHO feel good and register really well. Plus it has a 10-key which is a must for users like myself.

Cons: After having used Razer, Logitech and Corsair gaming keyboards for several years, I've gotten used to a more generously spaced key layout. I'm coming from a Razer Black Widow Ultimate keyboard and the key spacing on the MSI GK50 is definitely tighter than anything I've used recently. It may grow on me but I'd say that if you have large hands or long fingers you might want to pass on this keyboard. The other thing that is disappointing is the length of the cord. This has got to be one of the shortest USB cords I've seen on a premium keyboard.......ever.

Overall Review: My nit-picking can probably be offset by the value that the GK50 keyboard brings to the table. The USB cable is sleeved so it looks and feels premium. Since there aren't any pass-throughs for USB devices or head phones it is a single plug affair which I personally love. One reason I'm moving away from Razer is longevity. I've spent hundreds of dollars on Razer keyboards and frankly considering the money spent, the longevity hasn't been that great. I've had LED lighting go crazy or some keys quit working not long after the warranty is up. Contrast that with a couple of "un-fancy" Dell keyboards that I've had for years that probably have 1M keystrokes on them and still work to this day. At the end of the day I'd say for the money spent you should at least give it a try. The GK50 might be exactly what you are looking for at a decent and fair price.

All Good.......... Until It Wasn't

MSI MEG Z490 UNIFY LGA 1200 Intel Z490 SATA 6Gb/s ATX Intel Motherboard
MSI MEG Z490 UNIFY LGA 1200 Intel Z490 SATA 6Gb/s ATX Intel Motherboard

Cons: Of all the things I didn't check while doing the prebuild - the Realtek LAN.........I checked all of the M2 slots, all of the PCIe slots, all of the SATA ports, populated two and then four of the DIMM slots, even the Wifi was working fine. Then I decided to put it all in the case (water cooled mind you). Connected the LAN cable, no connection. Opened device manager, no Realtek LAN detected. Went back into the BIOS to confirm I had the onboard wired LAN enabled, yes it was. Reset BIOS and loaded optimized defaults. Checked again, still no LAN. Flashed BIOS back to both earlier and later revisions than came on the board. Checked again, still no LAN. Even reinstalled Windows and tried two different versions of the LAN drive. No luck.

Overall Review: Based on my small sample size of (1), I would not recommend this board.

No Issues

EVGA 450 BT 100-BT-0450-K1 450 W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Non-Modular Active PFC Power Supply
EVGA 450 BT 100-BT-0450-K1 450 W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Non-Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Working fine in a HTPC build. Powering a Gigabyte Z77 UD5H motherboard, core i7-3770K, 8Gb ddr3 2400 memory and a GTX 670 video card.

Cons: None on the PSU itself. Looking back wish I had sprung for the modular cable model, even at the higher price.

Overall Review: I guess I was one of the lucky buyers. No sparks, no drama, no DOA and no early failure.........(yet). Considering the purchase price, if this power supply last 3 years or longer I'll call it a win.

Not recommended for 5 GHz + Windows 10

TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 Dual Band Wireless N900 PCI Express Adapter, 2.4 GHz 450 Mbps / 5 GHz 450 Mbps, IEEE 802.1a/b/g/n, WEP / WPA / WPA2, Plug & Play in Windows 8
TP-LINK TL-WDN4800 Dual Band Wireless N900 PCI Express Adapter, 2.4 GHz 450 Mbps / 5 GHz 450 Mbps, IEEE 802.1a/b/g/n, WEP / WPA / WPA2, Plug & Play in Windows 8

Pros: The only pro to this PCIe wireless adapter card is that the 2.4 GHz radio is reliable and connects effortlessly.

Cons: I figured that I would try and beat the odds by installing this in a Windows 10 machine and not have any issues since I'm in the Information Technology and Electronics Industry. I figured that a couple of decades of networking experience would carry me through...... not. I've tried the card using Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Pro Anniversary Update and Windows 10 Pro Creators Update. All 3 versions of this card on the various Win10 Pro releases reproduces the same problem. A fresh install, or reinstall (as long as I flush the wireless profiles in Win10 prior to reinstalling) will allow me to successfully connect to my Netgear WNDR4500 WiFi Router's 5 GHz channel. But this adapter will constantly drop the 5 GHz connection and attempt to revert to the 2.4 GHz connection. This can be during actual use, or 100% of the time after resuming from sleep or a full restart. Even if the 2.4 GHz connection isn't configured (but the router radio is transmitting). I have 3 Windows 10 Pro computers and 1 Windows 7 Pro computer running on my home / office network. All Windows 10 machines exhibit the same problem. The Windows 7 machine does not. I also have multiple other wireless devices that are 5 GHz wireless N equipped (tablets and phones) and all of these can reliable connect to and hold a 5 GHz connection to the Netgear WNDR4500 WiFi router. So while the card isn't a complete paper weight, it does fail to do what I needed it to do when I purchased it. Primarily connect a Windows 10 based computer that is a media workstation to the 5 GHz wireless channel. I've tried auto-negotiation of the channels, manually assigning and setting every possible 5 GHz, every possible driver I could find and all to no avail. Long story short, if you're on Windows 7 or using this PCIe wireless adapter to connect your IOS or Android based devices you're good to go. But if you want this to work with Windows 10 machines you're better off looking elsewhere. I want to emphasize that the 2.4 GHz receiver on this cards works really well with Windows 10, the 5.0 GHz receiver is it's achilles heel.

Overall Review: Since I spent over 45 days experimenting and all other sorts of tom-foolery with this card and Windows 10, I exceeded NewEggs' 45 day return for refund policy. I could send it in for a replacement, but I'm not convinced that is even worth the trouble. So for now I'm stuck with it (or it's stuck with me). I'll likely pull the card and revert back to a wired connection for that particular machine, even if it means the unsightly wires I was trying to eliminate in the first place.

Happy With Purchase

Klipsch Status Over-Ear Headphones White
Klipsch Status Over-Ear Headphones White

Pros: I'm starting to accumulate a fairly large collection of headphones and headsets because I can't seem to pass up a good buy. I purchased these as a possible substitute for my Creative CALs (which are a great set of cans by the way considering the price). The few tech reviews I found of the Klipsch STATUS all read pretty favorable and I figured that the price was right. I use these mostly for gaming, but do listen to some music and do a little movie watching. Construction quality is superb, at the cost of weight. You can really tell the difference in weight if you swap between the Klipsch and the CALs or other less expensive headsets like the SteelSeries Siberia V2. However, after a bit you get used to the added heft and move on. Sound quality is very good. Highs and mids sound right on and I would say that these are neutral headphones. Bass is tight, not overwhelming or in your face (ears). Separation between the L & R channels is good and overall the listening experience is immersive. Noise blocking is excellent considering that these aren't active noise cancelling headphones. This is achieved with a fairly snug clamping force between the ear pads and your head. If you have a large head you might find these a bit uncomfortable for long long listening sessions. I have a fairly large head so they are quite snug and do require removal or repositioning after an hour or so. I can over look the weight and clamp force though in exchange for a great listening session. They work equally well for gaming, music and movies. I replaced the factory audio cable with a self built custom cable and that eliminated the microphonics of the nylon sleeved factory cable (which looked good, but really transmitted noise when rubbed against any surface - especially cloth - aka your shirt or pants). I like my headphones a little on the bright side so with some minor EQ tweaks I was able to achieve the sound signature I was looking for. This really is a headphone that benefits from source quality. Using this headphone you can really hear the difference between source quality (i.e. MP3 versus CD or vinyl). All in all a good buy and I would buy again if ever needed.

Cons: None
