Most Favorable Review

quite nice

ASRock 880GM-LE AM3 AMD 880G Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
ASRock 880GM-LE AM3 AMD 880G Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Core unlocker, nice onboard graphics, which scores 4.4 on Windows performance, highest onboard AMD graphics available on New Egg is 4290, so I thought it was a nice price/performance choice. Price right now is $60. 6 SATA II ports, 12 USB ports (6 back panel, another 6 usable with internal plugs). Core unlocker works, btw, I unlocked a X3 445 Rana with it, no problems, just set ACC to auto. Lots of ASRock utilities to tweak things, I'm liking them a lot.

Cons: As another reviewer wrote, only 2 memory slots, but 4GB is more than enough for me. OC options are a bit overkill for this model, but it's nice to see them in the BIOS. I'd suggest simply going auto everything unless you really know what you're doing. None of this docks an egg, though.

Overall Review: I got this in a sub $300 build (including case/power supply). I read the manual before making the plunge, and I think that right now this is probably the best bang for your buck if you want a low budget build. Works well with G. Skill F3-10600CL9D-4GBNT (cheapest 4GB kit on New Egg currently), which was a concern for me because this memory is not on the MB QVL list (ASRock provides a very long list of QVL'd memory). Add a nice $100 graphics card later and it'll be able to perform adequately in any game made to date for under $400 total (especially with that unlocked Phenom II 4X I mentioned).

regarding the rebate

SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4650 512MB GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Low Profile Ready Graphics Card 100253HDMI
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4650 512MB GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Low Profile Ready Graphics Card 100253HDMI

Pros: Card still running fine, have it OC'd to 755/500 and has been for two months, works really well for the price.

Cons: Rebate was sent out 11/5/2010, it was "processed" 11/29/2010, didn't get it until 12/28/2010. ie, rebate was accepted a month before I ever got it in the mail. I paid for the $2 express service. Won't be doing that again (yeah, it's just $2, but it's the principle of the matter, I know these things take time).

Overall Review: If you're waiting for your rebate, give it a month from when it was processed. (BTW, I did not want to dock too many stars, because this is not a card issue, it's a Sapphire rebate issue.)

does the job

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-10600CL9D-4GBNT
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-10600CL9D-4GBNT

Pros: had this ram about 2 months, no problems so far, runs great, price has dropped $25, no better time for budget computer builds than now

Cons: price dropped $25 in 2 months, but that's the market for ya! time for 8 GB rigs to become standard! times are changing folks

Overall Review: g.skill has in my experience been one of the more reliable brands, except for a very few modules that I've seen complaints on, their stuff is fantastic, just read the reviews

Nice price / performance ratio

SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4650 512MB GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Low Profile Ready Graphics Card 100253HDMI
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4650 512MB GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Low Profile Ready Graphics Card 100253HDMI

Pros: You cannot get a better card at this price / performance on NewEgg. After the rebate the thing is $35 (opt for the $2 quick return, or wait 10-12 weeks). For budget gamers this card will play most games made up until 2008 on the highest settings, at an acceptable resolution. Other games, such as the almighty Crysis, require a lower resolution with shadows and such turned off. Example might be a full GPU OC on Crysis on high results in 25-30 FPS at a pitiful 1024x768. In any event, if you have a kid that wants to play some more modern games on a real budget build, can't go wrong here. I love that 2 year old card tech is around the same price as 5 year old card tech was 5 years ago, if that makes sense.

Cons: Memory is weak compared to other options. There was a HIS 4670 1GB DDR3 on here for $15 more (if you don't care about the rebate). When OCing the card, the memory cannot go very high at all, so be careful. Catylast AutoTune gave utterly incorrect readings for OC options, and I thought for a moment there it fried my card (lots of glitching). Avoid AutoTune at all costs. Memory won't go over 125 Mhz spec, I don't dare go over 100 for short time periods. GPU will max out though, with no artifacting, no idea if my cool rig is enabling that or what.

Overall Review: Some games I've played with this card since getting it include SW: The Force Unleashed, CoD: Black Ops, Laura Croft and the Guardian of Light. The first two must have their settings gimped, especially shadows. The last one will play on highest settings with no real issues that I saw. Idles at 45C, which is, for my rig, rather hot. Under load it hits about 60C. OC'd to 755/500, temps didn't go up any higher, though its idle temp is 50C. Won't OC for games, I want this card to last me a little while, it's by no means primarily for gaming. To the person saying it's not an improvement over Radeon HD 4200, I beg to differ, as it's at least a 4x improvement. While you could probably fork out another $75 for a card that completely obliterates this one, it's a very nice buy currently. I wanted to get this card to stem the tide between now and when the 57xx's have their price drop in the next year or so. The onboard graphics I had weren't cutting it.

Rosewill CHALLENGER ATX Mid-Tower Gaming PC Computer Case, Expansion Ready: Internal 3.5" Bays & External 5.25" Bays, 3 Pre-installed Fans with Side Fan Mount Option
Rosewill CHALLENGER ATX Mid-Tower Gaming PC Computer Case, Expansion Ready: Internal 3.5" Bays & External 5.25" Bays, 3 Pre-installed Fans with Side Fan Mount Option

Pros: This case is ridiculous for the price. Absolutely ridiculous. I have absolutely no complaints, there's plenty of room for wire management, so you can wire everything through the backside of the case and improve airflow. The inside of my case literally has no wires hanging around the motherboard side, because there are holes strategically placed with which to run them through. You can drop $40-50 more for a comparable Coolermaster with somewhat nice connectors on the inside, or you can save your money and get a very good, sturdy case. The reviews here aren't lying, it's great. Wow.

Cons: Two things, very minor. The top left part of my MicroATX board is not be able to rested on a screw pin. This is somewhat disconcerting if you have your power plug on your motherboard in that location, but I got around it by twisting the power cord so it didn't push pressure on the motherboard. The external case panels have fairly flimsy screws, but it's not really a concern for me, I don't open it up regularly, so I think they'll hold out for as long as I have the case. Only one of the fans can be plugged in to the motherboard (for speed management), the other two go to your PSU. Shame because my motherboard had more fan connectors so I could've had control over those other two fans (they run slow though and are pretty quiet, so this is just an informational point I'm making here).

trip core for under $60

AMD Athlon II X3 445 - Athlon II X3 Rana Triple-Core 3.1 GHz Socket AM3 95W Desktop Processor - ADX445WFGMBOX
AMD Athlon II X3 445 - Athlon II X3 Rana Triple-Core 3.1 GHz Socket AM3 95W Desktop Processor - ADX445WFGMBOX

Pros: cheap triple core, idles at 25c with stock cooler, but I have a cool running rig overall. it's AMD all the way baby! :)

Cons: had same issue as others with stock cooler, very, VERY tight fit. I locked it down though, plastic cpu holder on my board had some give to it. couldn't unlock phenom stable, might try again with better cooler. not worth docking an egg, I bought a trip core

Overall Review: I got AC version, but wouldn't unlock stable
