ONKYO TX-SR313 5.1-Channel 3D-Ready Home Theater Receiver
ONKYO TX-SR313 5.1-Channel 3D-Ready Home Theater Receiver

Pros: HDMI control - compatible TV will control the receiver's volume using the TV or TV remote's volume +/- buttons. On screen display of menus and volume adjustments. Assignable input for each channel (HDMI/Optical/Coax/analog). Able tune to AM/FM radio while still watching TV (useful if watching a sports event and you prefer the radio announcer over the TV announcer).

Cons: Requires a powered sub. I guess that's pretty common for current receivers, but I was not able to re-use my dad's subwoofer from his 5.1 channel DVD player.

Overall Review: I purchased this for my dad who just moved into a new house. I have a Pioneer receiver that is 2 years old in the same price range and this receiver blows that one out of the water feature-wise. I guess that is just the progression of technology at work. This receiver is connected to a 4 year old Toshiba LCD TV and the HDMI controls work great for the volume and power controls, which save a lot of reprogramming of universal remotes.

4K passthrough and ARC didn't work

Harman Kardon AVR-1510S 5.1-Channel Network AV Receiver
Harman Kardon AVR-1510S 5.1-Channel Network AV Receiver

Pros: * Ran a 5 speaker setup with no subwoofer. Previous amp had a passive subwoofer, but sound quality through this receiver was similar. * Plenty of HDMI inputs

Cons: One of the deciding factors for purchasing this receiver was support for 4K passthrough. When connecting an Apple TV 4K to a 4K television, the output settings for the Apple TV automatically switch from the highest option being 2160p HDR to 1080p HDR. Colors looked great when connected directly to the TV at full resolution. When HDMI through this amp, the colors are washed out and the TV can no longer detect that the video source is HDR. Colors only improve when switching the Apple TV to 1080p SDR. As a workaround, I was going to connect Apple TV directly to TV and use the HDMI ARC port to return audio to the receiver. It worked for about 5 minutes, then the receiver completely stopped receiving audio via HDMI. I had to resort back to the optical audio cable to get the TV's audio processed through the receiver.

Overall Review: I needed a replacement for my old HDMI 1.3 receiver that could not process any video from a 4K device. I thought I was getting a good deal on a receiver that supported 4K passthrough, but after contacting support, I was informed that "there is a possibility that not all 4K signals can pass through the AVR, specifically if it uses HDCP 2.2, because this receiver only usese HDCP 1.4. The Harman Kardon customer support suggested running the Apple TV directly to the television and using ARC audio as I described in the "Cons" section, but I ultimately returned this receiver because that workaround did not work.

Works with Windows 10, but didn't with Windows 8.x

SYBA USB 3.0 External 2-port, 19-pin Header PCI-e Card,IDE Power Feed, Low Profile Bracket Bundled Model SY-PEX20140
SYBA USB 3.0 External 2-port, 19-pin Header PCI-e Card,IDE Power Feed, Low Profile Bracket Bundled Model SY-PEX20140

Pros: It seems to work as expected in an old computer running Windows 10. The motherboard is a series 4 Intel chipset with a Core 2 Quad processor. The header works with the front USB 3.0 port on the computer case.

Cons: Originally purchased in 2014 for my brother's computer. I specifically ordered a USB 3.0 port with a front USB 3.0 header to take advantage of the front port on the computer case, but every time Windows would start to boot with this add-on card installed, it would crash at the Windows loading screen. At some point several months later, I had to do a clean installation of Windows 8 on my brother's computer, so I tried this add-on again, but it Windows still crashed at the final stage of the setup when it was detecting hardware. Because this add-on card wasn't working, I thought it was a compatibility issue between the card's chipset and the motherboard's chipset. We ended up ordering a cheaper USB 3.0 add-on card without front USB header that used a different chipset. The other USB 3.0 card worked without issue.

Overall Review: After the trouble installing this add-on card, I left it in the package for the past 2.5 years. I built my brother a brand new computer with integrated USB 3.0 about a year later, so the original computer that we purchased the add-on for has become a spare computer for testing Windows Insider builds. The computer is currently on the official Windows 10 anniversary update that was released on August 9, 2016, so I tried this add-on card again. To my surprise it is working without any issue. According to Device Manager, the chipset on this USB 3.0 controller is from Etron.

2.4Ghz Mini Wireless Keyboard with Touchpad Touch pad for PC PS3 Android TV HTPC
2.4Ghz Mini Wireless Keyboard with Touchpad Touch pad for PC PS3 Android TV HTPC

Pros: Compact size. Keyboard and mouse capabilities in the same device.

Cons: Touchpad registers taps as left clicks. This wouldn't be bad if it recognized actual taps accurately. Almost every time I try to move the mouse cursor with the touchpad, it responds as if I am tapping the touchpad. I have to be very careful, and still usually start dragging icons around my start screen (Windows 8.1) or opening programs that I don't want to open. There is no software to control the touchpad settings on this device that I have found to modify this behavior. Also, it would be very beneficial to have included some sort of backlight for the keys. There is no way to tell what keys you're clicking by feel as everything is layed out in a straight rectangular pattern. I was trying to use this last night in the living room with the lights off. I had to lean forward in my chair and tilt the face of the keyboard toward my TV screen just to have enough light to see the keys.

Overall Review: The size and rechargeability make the idea of this keyboard much more suitable for my HTPC than the infrared remote WMC keyboard I had been using. I no longer have to worry about holding a full size keyboard just right to point the front of this full-sized keyboard at the IR sensor.

BYTECC USB3-1M-A/MICRO 3 ft. Blue USB 3.0 Male to Micro B Male Cable
BYTECC USB3-1M-A/MICRO 3 ft. Blue USB 3.0 Male to Micro B Male Cable

Pros: Transfers rate between an internal SATA to a Seagate Expansion USB 3.0 drive is consistent with the stock USB 3.0 cable (approx 58 Mbps on USB 3.0 ports and 23 Mbps on USB 2.0 ports). The cable length gives much more flexibility on the placement of the USB drive.

Cons: Transfers rate from internal SATA to a Hitachi Touro Pro Mobile, which has compatibility issues with Windows 8, drops from approx 69 Mbps with the stock cable on USB 3.0 ports to 12 Mbps with this cable. The drive is not recognized by USB 2.0 ports on Windows 8, but this seems to be an issue with the Hitachi drive and not this cable.

Overall Review: I first ordered a generic USB 3.0 cable from a different online seller thinking my cable was damaged for my Hitachi Touro Mobile Pro drive after upgrading to Windows 8. It turns out there is an issue with Windows 8 USB drivers and some USB 3.0 equipment. Anyway, I tested that cable with the Seagate Expansion USB 3.0 drive and found out that cable only transfers at USB 2.0 speeds even when connected to USB 3.0 ports. This cable seems to be an improvement on speed over that generic USB cable and an improvement on length for the stock USB 3.0 cables that are shipped with portable hard drives.

Not getting 150Mbps

ZyXEL NWD2105 Wireless N-lite Adapter IEEE 802.11b/g/n USB 2.0 Up to 150Mbps Wireless Data Rates
ZyXEL NWD2105 Wireless N-lite Adapter IEEE 802.11b/g/n USB 2.0 Up to 150Mbps Wireless Data Rates

Pros: Stable connection. Easy to install and doesn't take up much space.

Cons: It works, but does not fulfill the purpose for which it was purchased. I wanted to avoid running network cables in my house, but I can only get Windows to recognize a 72Mbps connection instead of 150Mbps. Don't even know if that would make a difference, but as it stands, streaming HD video between my office desktop PC and my HTPC in the living room results in very choppy video.

Overall Review: I will try this adapter in my laptop to see if it can detect the full 150Mbps rated speed and/or if that helps streaming video to the laptop over the integrated 802.11b/g adapter.

Slow shipping without proper tracking information

I placed my order on November 27, and it took 3 weeks to arrive. The tracking number provided for the order was useless. It was in the format of a Canada Post tracking number, but every time I checked for the status, the Canada Post website would say that they have not received the package from the shipper. I tried contacting the seller twice, but they could not offer any information regarding the status of the shipment. After receiving the package, I learned that it was shipped through a Chinese carrier. None of the numbers on the shipping label corresponded with a format used by Chinese shipping companies. The time frame in which my order arrived was about what could be expected for economy shipping from China to the US, but based on the tracking number provided, I had no idea where my shipment had originated.

Fast shipping, n

I ordered a refurbished phone that had a sticker on the box stating that the phone was "Refurbished - Inspected and like new." This does not describe the phone I received. It should have been running Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 as the operating system. Instead, it was running Windows 10 Insider Preview indicating that the phone had not actually been reset with factory software, but I was able to do this myself with Windows Phone Recovery Tool from my PC. The rear housing/battery cover also had a noticeable scratch about 1 cm long near the rear camera. It doesn't affect the functions, but it is still something that negates the "like new" description. On the positive, the phone arrived very quickly and was a decent price even if it would have been sold as "used" instead of "refurbished." I have contacted the seller about misrepresenting what is considered "refurbished" with no response yet. Their refurbishing does not appear to have been officially done by the manufacturer.

poor communication/slow shipment

I placed my order on February 18 and received a tracking number within a few days. On March 9 (almost 3 weeks later), I sent a message through Newegg to the seller because there had been no movement on my tracking number. I never received a response from the seller, but 2 days after I sent the message, the tracking info was updated that the Origin Post had received the package. I don't know if my email prompted the seller to finally drop off the package for shipment or if the timing was a coincidence. I wouldn't buy from this seller again with service like that. The only reason they get 2 stars is because I eventually received the actual item that I ordered.
