Mushkin Enhanced Mulholland 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDMH8GB
Mushkin Enhanced Mulholland 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model MKNUFDMH8GB

Pros: Nice form factor. Works reliably. Speed is decent. Some performance figures. I'm using these as an external offsite backup for critical documents. These docs total nearly 8 GB spread across 8 large files of varying size and are simply copied over. This is a sequential write pattern which is nearly the ideal write pattern. System: Ubuntu 10.04 linux system, FS on drive is the default (some version of FAT). Initial write on a fresh drive was about 12MB/sec (quite speedy). However, after doing 2 erase and re-write cycles, the transfer rate is down to about 8.5MB/sec (even after taking into account the CPU time to do block allocation - wallclock is closer to 8 MB/s). Just over 15 minutes to fill up the drive.

Cons: Plastic cap is separate rather than attached or integrated. Not quite as fast as I'd like after drive has been aged.

Overall Review: Actually a nice unit. The packaging was reasonable and easy to open. Appears to be solidly built. Unless I can find something faster for a comparable price in the future, I plan on buying more of these going forward. Paid $17.99/unit for 2 units on 2010-09-26.

Great Little Board

GIGABYTE GA-D510UD Intel Atom D510 BGA559 Intel NM10 Mini ITX Motherboard / CPU Combo
GIGABYTE GA-D510UD Intel Atom D510 BGA559 Intel NM10 Mini ITX Motherboard / CPU Combo

Pros: This is a solid little board. I picked this up to use as a mail server/firewall/web server/file server/DNS cache, etc. This MB replaced my P2-400 that used to be there and I got a 10x speed increase. As it was a partial system upgrade, my existing drives were both PATA and ran off of the single port. In any case, the performance was acceptable. I ran the board with 2GB of RAM and it performed admirably. The board itself cost me under $90 3 years ago - a great bargin for a whole system (minus the RAM). 3 years of rock-solid service.

Cons: After a recent power failure, the board now refuses to POST or beep. I had the system protected by a UPS and have it attached to an Antec power supply. This thing is toast. I would have expected the board to last longer. My last board in this role lasted 10 years and was only replaced for performance reasons.

Overall Review: This board has a great mix of components. My one complaint about most board this size is that they only come with 1 network port. For a firewall and complex router, I need 3 network ports. This leaves me in the position of having to find/buy a NIC with at least two ports and those are expensive. I'd appreciate 2 networking ports in place of the plethora of USB connections availablle.
