Another Awesome ASUS
Pros: This is a beautiful machine, yet another wonderful example of the high quality I have come to expect from ASUS. Super fast, durable, runs anything you are likely to need it to run. Very quiet system, I've had it for exactly 1 month & 1 day and the loudest noise it makes during operation is the spinning of the optical drive. System stays cool even under heavy stress, battery life is far superior to any other desktop replacement laptop I've owned or used. The back-lit keyboard is a wonderful addition, this feature can be turned off or dimmed to suit the user, makes operation in the dark much easier as you don't have to try to tilt the screen to shed light on the keys when searching for your "fn+__" keys and even in a well lit room the back-light comes in handy as it makes reading the keys at a glance/from a distance much easier. Video card is amazing, this computer is the first thing I ever viewed a blu-ray (via download, disc drive is DVD not blu-ray) on that actually seemed to justify the blu-ray vs. dvd argument for me. Built in speakers are amazing (for a laptop) even without the external sub-woofer that comes with it. Finally I especially enjoy the crisp/clean design of this particular laptop. It's very sleek and isn't cluttered up with excessive patterns, designs, extra buttons, and such that were on my previous Asus computers & are common on most computer brands.
Cons: The only flaw I have observed in the system itself is that the black aluminum lid seems to hold onto & show oil marks from your hands. Nothing that isn't easily cleaned off with an alcohol wipe or similar product but for someone as OCD as myself it can be irksome. The biggest con with this purchase though is that it comes with Windows 8. Like most tech savvy people I read previous reviews complaining about Win8 & honestly I rolled my eyes and brushed it off as the same hatred of change that accompanied Vista & Win7 releases. I was mistaken. Sure I should have done some research maybe played with Win8 up at a retail store or something and maybe I wouldn't have been so appalled when I received this computer with this OS on it, but I was raised on computers, tech is in my blood, I've never ran into a system I couldn't run or a computer problem I couldn't figure out. Naturally I assumed Win8 wouldn't be too much of a headache, no more than Win7 or Vista or any other new OS Windows has produced in my lifetime. Windows 8 is so asinine & infuriating I went from "kid at Christmas" to "someone purposely ran over my dog" within the first 20min of turning on the system. I literally put my brand new beautiful wonderful machine down after the first hour of messing with Win8 and was too mad to even look at it until 8 hours later when I proceeded to contact Asus tech & then windows themselves trying to see if I could get one of them to send me a free Win7 disc to downgrade the machine. A direct quote from my conversation with Windows; "I feel like I bought a brand new Ferrari and someone swapped it's engine with that of a U-go when I wasn't looking." I cannot express enough how much I dislike Win8, I am currently awaiting the OS upgrade that I was assured would be released the middle of October which is supposed to fix most of the issues I have with Win8, if the update fails to accomplish this I will be purchasing a copy of Win7 or Vista to fix the OS. Sorry for the mini-rant but I felt it necessary to make sure others out there have the opportunity to realize that the Win8 complaints are valid, and not all written by 60year old tech-illiterates who simply don't like change. In my opinion Win8's entire design is flawed, illogical, and makes potentially "dangerous" system options (such as complete system reformat) too easily accessible. So much so that it is possible a parent could go to the restroom and return 5min later to discover their toddler completely erased their system. I would prefer to run WinXP over Win8 but maybe I'm just too much of a control freak expecting everything to be logical & not designed as though Windows assumes their entire client base is too stupid to work a computer. Anyway, enough rant, I still love this awesome computer & harbor no resentment towards Asus or Newegg, it's not their fault the Windows designers really made a flop this time. Just fair warning to others out there like me who are ignorant to the ways of Win8.
Overall Review: The description says "black aluminum" which is true for the top of the lid/back of the screen. The keyboard area is silver aluminum and the bottom of the laptop is hard black plastic. The plastic bottom is probably better than a 100% aluminum case as it doesn't get hot on your legs like I'd expect aluminum would.
