Most Favorable Review

well made

StarTech.com SATA18RA1 1.5 ft. SATA to Right Angle SATA Serial ATA Cable
StarTech.com SATA18RA1 1.5 ft. SATA to Right Angle SATA Serial ATA Cable

Pros: Molded construction, very solid, snap in place, and no metal clips.

Cons: None, other than Newegg is out of stock as of this writing.

Overall Review: Another brand of cables I also purchased fell apart. They were press fitted plastic construction and 2 out of 3 did not work. These StarTech work every time, are molded construction and snap in place without the need for the metal clip. If you value your disk drive and motherboard sata controller, these are proper cables.

Update on case issues

LIAN LI Lancool First Knight Series PC-K9B Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
LIAN LI Lancool First Knight Series PC-K9B Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: The case layout is nice with wire channel in the back side. 6 drive bays plus room for 2 SSD drives. Very efficient layout for the size. I would recommend the case, except issues below.

Cons: Improper packing by manufacture can lead to damaged drive cage when it arrives.

Overall Review: When shipped the extra box of screws are strapped to the drive cage. Shipping force caused this to shear several rivets of the drive cage and bending it out of shape. I managed to re-rivet and re-straighten out the drive cage. I suspect there is better value if you shop around. I'll compare with the Fractal Design Core 3000 when it arrives, at half the price.

24/7 over year no failures

WD Red Plus 3TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s, CMR, 64MB Cache, 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX
WD Red Plus 3TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s, CMR, 64MB Cache, 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: Drives have worked reliably for over a year. They are quiet and low power.

Cons: Not the fastest, but that is tradeoff with heat and power.

Overall Review: I started with 5 drives in a Linux raid 6 server and have expanded to 9 drives. The only reliability issue has been with the controller used with the drives. Too many disk failures are related to controllers, cables and system setup. Currently using an LSI 9211-8i, non-raid mode (would also suggest LSI LSI00302 (9207-8i Kit)). The 9211-8i failed and was RMAed with LSI, but the controller runs hot and needs fan blowing directly on it. The raid drives have never failed. Many MB sata controllers have inadequate heat sinks and can also cause drive failures.

Failed after 4 months

LSI Internal SATA/SAS 9211-8i 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 RAID Controller Card, Single--Avago Technologies
LSI Internal SATA/SAS 9211-8i 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 RAID Controller Card, Single--Avago Technologies

Pros: Plugs in and sata drives immediately recognized. No configuration required if all you need is sata drive expansion.

Cons: Just quit working after 4 months of use. My linux raid 6 suddenly failed on all 8 drives attached to this controller. I do not recommend this for file server reliability.

Overall Review: I used this in a linux raid 6 array with 9 drives 3Tb WD red drives, 8 of which were on this controller. Initially everything went smooth. The server ran flawlessly for 4 months, then suddenly the controller failed. I swapped pci ports with the video card and no change, so I doubt it was the MB, but plan to test with another linux box. Asus p8z77 MB, Xeon E3 processor, Seasonic ss-660xp power supply.

Destroys MB audio and PCI

Rosewill Model RC-301 - Dual Serial Port PCI Card / PCI Parallel Port Card
Rosewill Model RC-301 - Dual Serial Port PCI Card / PCI Parallel Port Card

Pros: If you find the right drivers, it does work. But caution, only on older motherboards should you use this card.

Cons: I installed this in two motherboards, P8Z77-V and a P8Z68-v, and on both motherboards the audio chip toasted. I highly recommend avoiding this serial port card except for legacy systems.

Overall Review: Unfortunately the first MB I installed I was not using the audio. I tried the card in second computer, P8Z77-V and heard a distinct pop on the speakers. Since then the audio is gone. Not sure what the issues is, but this card is dangerous to other devices on the PCI bus. Only use this on older systems. The card did work, but I have no idea why this would cause problems with the realtek audio on the MB.

Ethernet Fixed!

Intel BOXDQ77KB LGA 1155 Intel Q77 HDMI USB 3.0 Mini ITX Intel Motherboard
Intel BOXDQ77KB LGA 1155 Intel Q77 HDMI USB 3.0 Mini ITX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Several other reviews outline the excellent pros. The biggest pro for me: This was the only mini-ITX with dual ethernet at the time I purchased. Makes a great shorewall router.

Cons: The second ethernet - 82579LM - on linux hangs except for the latest BIOS (52). UEFI bios for linux can be tricky. You have to install to /EFI/BOOT and then the bios will recognize a bootable disk.. Newegg no longer stocks this board, but should now that the issues have been fixed.

Overall Review: This is an Update of my previous reviews, Intel has finally fixed the ethernet with bios 52. The 82579LM ethernet in linux will hang on all but the latest bios. The bios updater also works on later version of the bios. Be careful if you have to use the recovery mode (removing the internal jumper) or you can brick the board. Allow at least 10 minutes once you start the bios update via recovery mode, even if you don't think the board is doing anything. Running Arch Linux with shorewall as a router.

Unresponsive seller

I tried to cancel this order shortly after submitting it. No response from seller. Needless to say I will not be purchasing anything from newegg online sellers in the future. Other sites have a much more reliable system.
