ASRock X79 EXTREME4-M LGA 2011 Intel X79 USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
ASRock X79 EXTREME4-M LGA 2011 Intel X79 USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Received a new BIOS chip from ASRock several days ago with version 1.6 on it. The compatibility issue with the i7 3820 was resolved quickly. It was definitely a positive support experience. ASRock was quick to respond via email support. They also sent the replacement chip quickly. Replacing the chip was a piece of cake. I already had tools necessary to do it. Many years ago when I last had a motherboard problem it wasn't this easy to fix. Good job, ASRock! I like the AXTU software included with this board. It made checking the thermal and clock performance of the i7 3820 during initial testing easy. The included capability to create a RAM disk without needing another tool is nice too. The SB fan on the motherboard is quiet. I have not been able to hear it. PCIe, audio, networking, and fan control all appear to be working just fine. No unresponsive ports. I used the RST Enterprise software to put 2 SSDs in RAID0. Nice and stable.

Cons: Razer mouse input is inverted in UEFI. Horizontal is normal. No big deal.

Overall Review: If you're like me and purchased a tiny case, a huge GPU, and a cooling system that didn't install as easy as the instructions said it should try to prepare yourself for an impending BIOS problem by checking the revision numbers on the little square sticker near the SB fan. If it's not 1.6 then you need an updated chip for use of an i7 3820 or you will get a 0xAF error. You might need an update for other CPUs too. Get in touch with ASRock or, if impatient, use the internet to learn how to update the chip yourself. It is not necessary to remove the motherboard to fix this problem. Also, stop staying up so late fiddling with computers. Specs: Lepa G500-MA PSU, ASRock Extreme4-m Mobo, Intel i7 3820 CPU, Intel liquid cooler, Sapphire Radeon 7950 OC GPU, 4x4GB Kingston DDR3 1600 RAM, 2x240GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD

Regret Decision to Purchase

Intel S1200KP Mini ITX Server Motherboard LGA 1155 Intel C206 DDR3 1066/1333
Intel S1200KP Mini ITX Server Motherboard LGA 1155 Intel C206 DDR3 1066/1333

Pros: Mini-ITX form factor is nice and small. Board layout is good.

Cons: As the previous reviewer stated V2 Xeon CPUs are not supported even though ark.intel.com says they are on the S1200KP product page. The compatibility information provided by Intel is highly misleading. You have to read the manual to see that there is a compatibility problem. You actually need the S1200KPR which Newegg does not carry at the time of this review. It's hard to find. Intel also indicates that the chipset and CPU support VT-D. The S1200KP and S1200KPR do not because Intel has arbitrarily decided not to include these features by blocking them from the BIOS. Intel's support does not recognize this as a problem. This is disgusting. Also, unlike everything else, the S1200KP family does not support registered ECC RAM or x16 organization RAM. It is very very picky about RAM. You have to dive into the manual to find this out.

Overall Review: Really regret my decision to build a mini-ITX home server. It would have been smarter to go with micro-ATX where I could buy a non-Intel motherboard. I really wanted to stash this thing away and run a home server hosting a couple of virtual machines. Now I have to scale back those plans plus I'm out $60 for shipping, return, and restocking. Thanks, Intel. This is the second Intel system I've built this year and the second one to give me problems. The x79 system I built earlier this year also had a motherboard/CPU related problem with the stepping. Getting help from ASRock was a piece of cake. Intel just wants you to post onto their community forum where they can ignore you. Really terrible product support. I will never buy an Intel motherboard again. It's 2012. These problems should not still be happening. Important features should not be missing. Avoid this product.

Very sensitive to placement

Definitive Technology POWERFIELD 310 Subwoofer
Definitive Technology POWERFIELD 310 Subwoofer

Pros: I bought this sub to complement some DefTech StudioMonitor 350's also sold by Newegg. The speakers are part of a surround system in my new home theater. I have to say that I am happy with the Powerfield 310. At first I wasn't too thrilled. The sub seemed like it either threw a lot of bass or none at all. It also seemed hypersensitive on the power-saving feature. There wasn't a note about break-in for the sub. The SM350's did have a break-in note on them so I ended up applying that to the PF310. The system played random music for a solid 18 hours with the sub turned up higher than it should have been. I am now happy with this sub. It is very sensitive to placement though. My carpeted floor eats up a lot of the low-end sound, but putting it near a wall or corner helped better project the sound. If you're looking to feel low-end audio this unit may not be strong enough. I live in a townhouse so I figured this would make a good compromise between power and not making my neighbors hate me. Definitely an upgrade over an older HTIB subwoofer! I've found that he power-saving feature doesn't seem to kick in quite as aggressively anymore and the sub puts out a wider range of low frequencies now. I wasn't so sure of it at first. Now I am convinced the price was right and this was the right sub for me.

Cons: As stated above there seemed to be an undocumented break-in period. Give the sub some time to loosen up. It seems to help it create a wider range of low frequency noise and not be so aggressive on the power-saving. I'm going to kick an egg off for the downward-firing woofer and port. It seems to limit the placement flexibility of this unit. You really need to experiment with it to get it in the right spot. I found side-firing and ported units a bit more flexible.

Overall Review: Is it as good as a movie theater? When you're at a nice theater you feel the bass. You can feel the explosions rattle your seats. Does the PF310 do that? I don't think it can. You've got to look at the PF312 if you want that sort of sound. For me and my 12 foot wide, 24 foot-deep theater room in a townhouse this seemed just right. Overall, happy customer here!

Clear and wide ranging sound

Definitive Technology StudioMonitor 350 Bookshelf/Stand Mount Speaker (Black) Pair
Definitive Technology StudioMonitor 350 Bookshelf/Stand Mount Speaker (Black) Pair

Pros: I bought 3 pairs of these when they were on sale. My intention was to create a 7.1 speaker system with the matching DefTech CLR2002 center channel. Unfortunately, I cannot find the center channel at a reasonable price anywhere, so I've reverted to a 6.1 setup. StudioMonitor 350's are on all channels complemented by a Powerfield 310 sub. The SM350 speakers are very impressive. They create rich sound that puts my old HTIB speakers to shame. They are far clearer and crisper than my friend's in-wall speakers too. I have been really happy with these things. They are capable of putting out a much wider range of sound than any of the speakers I've had in the past from companies like JVC and Sony. These speakers are pretty bulky. They do not have ports, but they do have side-firing passive woofers. I found it best to point these towards a wall, but not perpendicular to it. My SM350's are on wall brackets so the backs of the speakers are about 3 inches away from the wall, but the sides are a minimum of 12 inches from the wall. Superb sound.

Cons: READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. There's a note in there about a break-in period that can last up to 40 hours. It's not in there just to waste ink. These speakers will make your ears hurt and give you listening fatigue when new. I was shocked by this effect as I've never experienced it before on speakers. I let these things play random soundtracks and audio CDs on loop for about 20 hours. That's when the effect seemed to resolve itself for me. My hearing is very sensitive so it may affect me more than other people. This is a con, but it's an expected con. It will resolve itself. You can even see other people experiencing this in older reviews. Give these things some time to loosen up. It's worth the wait!

Overall Review: I bought 3 pairs. I am very happy. If I could find a reason to buy more I Probably would do so.

Does the job without taking up too much space

Samsung BD-F5700 Wi-Fi Blu-Ray Player
Samsung BD-F5700 Wi-Fi Blu-Ray Player

Pros: This model has a compact and minimalist design. There are no obnoxious lights, the remote is backlit and well laid out, and the blu-ray drive is quiet. I didn't experience any problems with the wireless. In fact, setup was quick and easy. For the limited space available this unit fits in perfectly. This player is another one of those smart devices. It has apps, firmware updates, and a good variety of on screen menu controls. I'm honestly not a big user of the built-in apps. I did use the YouTube app and had no problem with it. Ok, entering letters was annoying, but that's to be expected with a remote control!

Cons: I've subtracted an egg because the power light on this model is on the top of the unit rather than the front. All of the built-in controls are actually on the top and are touch-sensitive. I don't like this. It makes it harder to tell if the unit is on or off at a glance. The top buttons also make stacking other objects on top of it troublesome. Also, take note that only an HDMI port exists for video connectivity. This is all I needed so not taking an egg off for it. Some people may be upset at the lack of connectivity options. There is no front display. I'm not even sure Samsung had room for it so not taking an egg off for this either. Samsung is all into curved stuff though. They could have done a curved display, eh? :-D (horrible suggestion, don't do this, SERIOUSLY, don't)

Overall Review: This was a gift to my parents. I've spent the mos time using this player so far (including setup time). It fit into the limited space perfectly and plays blu-rays. It's snappier to load than my old Panasonic blu-ray player. Bottom line: his Samsung is a good, basic, compact blu-ray player.

Digital Artist Approved

SAMSUNG Galaxy Note 10.1 Wifi 10.1-inch 32GB Tablet PC – Deep Gray
SAMSUNG Galaxy Note 10.1 Wifi 10.1-inch 32GB Tablet PC – Deep Gray

Pros: I've owned this tablet since August of 2012. Samsung has come a long way since then. Software updates are much more regular now and there have been definite improvements in stability and responsiveness in the past year. I'm a digital artist. I bought this tablet because my Windows tablet PC is heavy and does not have the long battery life. My Note 10.1 can go 12 hours on battery. I've been very happy with it and taken it to several conventions and trips. The Wacom-like pen is the killer feature. I love drawing ont he screen and love how precise the pen is. There was no calibration needed on my machine. The included Photoshop Touch is a good program. It's good at drawing, although it definitely struggles with larger, soft brushes. The CPU power on Android tablets just doesn't compare to a higher-end tablet PC like what I've also got. The palm-rejection forces you to lead with the pen. Definitely give Sketchbook Pro and LayerPaint a try as those two programs have a better ability to ignore touch input in favor of focusing on the pen. If you're a digital artist looking for a Cintiq-like experience on the go you owe it to yourself to pick one of these things up. It's not perfect nor is it quite as sensitive as a Cintiq, but you can make art with it easily and it's quite the conversation piece in crowds of artists. I've found this thing is best for sketching and inking. Color requires more horsepower.

Cons: Proprietary Samsung connector on bottom of the tablet. I wish they had just added traditional small USB ports. There is also a bunch of bloatware on this thing that doesn't really need to be there. Samsung refuses to let you uninstall it. Samsung experience apps, Nook, and the annoying screenshot service all come to mind immediately. I have not rooted this tablet so I have not removed those things. They're annoying, but not distracting. Samsung's UI also acts really funny with Chrome browser and Dolphin browser. Strange behavior from copy, paste, and tab functionality.

Overall Review: I feel that this purchase has been a good buy. I've had it over a year and a half now. The Note 10.1 bests all other tablets at this price based on its stylus pen. Spend several hundred more for a Surface tablet for the next real entry in the tablets-with-Wacom-stylus-pens category.
