Nice little mobo

ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard
ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Great mother board, I had no problems building my system around it. The onboard sound was a pleasant surprise. It sounds great, and when you plug something into a front panel audio connector, it detects this automatically, and asks you what you're hooking up. That means you're not limited to headphones and/or microphone at the front panel, you could suddenly decide to plug in a line-in or line-out, or even rear speakers, to any of the jacks... pretty cool. Headers for 6 USB connectors is nice.

Cons: 2 of the SATA connectors are "Drive Xpert", which I don't really care about. It turns out that you can, however, configure them to be "normal" SATA, so not a big deal.

Overall Review: I initially wanted to get the P5Q Deluxe... but I really needed all of the available SATA connectors, and all of the reviews I read said that my graphics card (HD4870) would cover up a couple of them. There is no such problem with this board, so I'm glad I went with the Pro instead.

Doesn't work for SBS 2011

Intel S1200BTL ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1155 Intel C204 DDR3 1066/1333 DIMM
Intel S1200BTL ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1155 Intel C204 DDR3 1066/1333 DIMM

Pros: None. I really hate this board.

Cons: I've built many systems, this was by far the worst experience I've ever had with a mother board. The driver support is horrible. At the time of this writing there doesn't appear to be any way to boot this into SBS 2011, none of the drivers to access the hard drive will work, either in RAID or non-RAID mode. Seems to work fine with Windows 7, but not SBS 2011. I realize that this is a no-nonsense server board, but I'm still a little surprised that this has only a VGA output, and no sound output at all. I wasn't expecting HDMI and 5.1 dolby surround... but DVI and basic stereo would be nice. The front panel connector does not conform to Intel's own front panel standard. It's a custom job, targeted specifically for an Intel Chassis. This is great if you have an Intel Chassis, but a wiring pain if you don't. Documentation is almost non-existent. All in all, the rest might be forgivable, but the driver situation made this board unusable. Save yourself the trouble and pass on thi

Overall Review: First mother board I've ever had to send back. Good riddance. How Intel can be so lax with their driver support is beyond me. SBS 2011 has been out for awhile now, there's no excuse. If you're not a major OEM supplier, I would suggest avoiding Intel mother boards at all costs.

Nice Power Supply

OCZ GameXStream OCZ600GXSSLI 600 W ATX12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Nice PSU, and the blue LED fan matches the blue LEDs in an Antec 900 case nicely! Plenty of SATA connectors. The cables were nice an long.

Cons: None

Overall Review: Great for the price.

Once you get it working... it's really fast

SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card 100247L
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card 100247L

Pros: This is the best card I've ever owned in terms of speed. I'm running pretty much everything at 1920x1200 now, this card is incredible.

Cons: What a pain to get this thing to work properly. I came close to RMA'ing it, and I still might. Right out of the box the thing couldn't run almost all 3D games for more than a few minutes without crashing back to windows, or even completely locking up the system. It turns out that you need to make a custom profile in the Catalyst control panel that: 1) Turns up the fan a bit 2) Turns OFF the PowerPlay feature, which is supposed to dynamically adjust the speed of the GPU based on loading. That's really the feature that crashes and burns. Once I did that... I haven't had a single crash with anything I've thrown at it, and I've been trying. It's been amazingly stable.

Overall Review: Grrrr... I'm still a bit miffed that they let something so obvious slip through in the rush to get this thing out to market. Come on people, based on the amount of traffic on the internet forums with people having similar problems, this one should have been an easy catch. Still... I have a hard time rating this below a 4, since I've had no problems ever since I tweaked the profile, and when it works it's so freakin' fast!

Man, is this an ugly mouse

Logitech MX 518 Aluminum 8 Buttons 1 x Wheel USB Wired Optical Gaming Mouse
Logitech MX 518 Aluminum 8 Buttons 1 x Wheel USB Wired Optical Gaming Mouse

Comments: I came really close to returning this mouse before opening the box, I honestly thought that the finish was defective. I ended up surfing the internet and finding a closeup picture before I could convince myself that it was actually done that way on purpose. The attempt (I guess) was to make it look sort of sparkly 3-D, like those old-fashioned bowling balls. It's not very consistent at all though, and in my opinion it just looks cheesy. I was excited about getting 1600 dpi since everybody says how great it is for gaming. What actually happens is that for gaming you usually don't want more dpi... you want less. When you set it at 1600 dpi the silly cursor flys all over the place out of control. Try playing Battlefield 2, and you can't even aim unless you turn the resolution down. The problem with this is that the driver software which allows you to change resolutions keeps crashing, which makes it so you can't adjust the dpi. Also, if you have a Logitech keyboard that uses "iTouch", well they've since replace the iTouch utility with "SetPoint"... but the new mouse/keyboard utility isn't backwards compatible, so if you have an older Logitech keyboard you end up having to run both utilities at the same time. The mouse does slide nicely, has a great shape, and the buttons feel good. It's so ugly though it's actually a bit embarassing. I'll probably go back to my old Logitech Mx310.
