Fun Motherboard for G3258 Overclocking

ASRock Z97 Anniversary LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
ASRock Z97 Anniversary LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: This is a fun little board for a budget build. I paired it with the G3258 and overclocked it right away with no issues. The sapphire black PCB looks good and the blue color scheme goes well with an Intel theme. Of course, being a budget motherboard it lacks the key features of Z97 motherboards like M.2 and SATA express, but for the price that's kind of expected.

Cons: The layout of the board could be a bit better, the CPU fan headers are smack in the middle of the board, which made it very difficult while building. I will need to pick up a fan extension cable as the cooling setup right now is not ideal. I had to kinda "make it work for now". The board is also fairly narrow for a standard ATX board which looks a bit odd sitting in the case. But these are minor complaints and overall ASRock did an admirable job with the board.

Overall Review: If you are looking for a low budget Z97 board for your G3258 Pentium Anniversary overclocking fun, then this is it. I popped it into a white NZXT S340 case and while the board looks a bit narrow inside the case, it fit right in without any problems and overall looks pretty good. The UEFI takes a little getting used to but has plenty of options to play around with.

BSOD Monster

G.SKILL Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-1600C9D-8GAB

Pros: Great looking low profile memory, low cost.

Cons: Bad memory modules causing BSODs all day long. Crashed windows in the middle of an update. I had to re-install Windows. I swapped out the bad modules for a set of Team memory modules I knew to be good and the system is fine now 100% stable.

Overall Review: I will probably just pull the heat spreaders and swap them onto my Team memory modules. I mostly just bought these for the aesthetics. I'm not going to waste my money shipping budget memory through the RMA process, that pretty much defeats the whole purpose of buying budget parts.

Fantastic Case for the Money!

RAIJINTEK SILENOS, an ATX Tower Designed to Install High Air Flow 200mm Fans and a Clean Transparent Front and Side Tempered glass (4.0mm), Supports VGA length up to 320mm, 2x3.5 HDDs & 6x2.5 HDD/SSDs

Pros: - Solid case - Well thought out - Great finish - Looks amazing - Very happy with my purchase

Cons: - Be aware that the pictures are marketing materiel and the tempered glass panels are not clear as they appear in the picture. They are tinted.

Overall Review: It was fun to build in this case and easy to get it all put together. Power supply cables are a little cramped with the 3.5 inch drive mounts installed. I removed mine as they weren't needed, but I would recommend a shorter PSU if you want to keep the drive mounts.

Super Portable

LIAN LI PC-TU100B Black Aluminum Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case
LIAN LI PC-TU100B Black Aluminum Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case

Pros: Ultra small form factor Convenient handle for carrying Great for LAN parties

Cons: Special consideration for hardware selection

Overall Review: If you've ever built a small form factor PC, then you know the difficulties with tight spaces. This case is designed to be very small and ultra portable. That said, building in this case presents some unique challenges. First of all it requires an SFX power supply, I highly recommend a modular PSU. Second the CPU cooler clearance is very low at just 60mm, I recommend something like the Noctua NH-L9a (or NH-L9a-AM4 for Ryzen). Third, you will be limited in your GPU selection at a maximum length of 193mm (7.59 inches). Right now the RTX 2060 is about the most powerful GPU you can find that will fit. That should be sufficient for most 1080P or even 1440P gaming. We will see what the 30 series has to offer over the coming months. Overall, if you are simply looking for a really small rig that can be used for LAN parties or an "on-the-go" rig, this case fits the bill. If you want something a bit bigger, that can handle a full size GPU, then take a look at the new PC-TU150, an updated case with available tempered glass side panel and convenient handle for portability. Recommended components for build: X570 Mini ITX Ryzen 7 3700X (65W TDP) 650W SFX PSU (modular) Noctua NH-L9a-AM4 (low profile cooler) RTX 2060 Mini NVMe SSD (PCIE 4.0X4)

All Good

Pros: Speed and timing as advertised. No issues setting up XMP. Passed MemTest86 flawlessly.

Cons: None

Overall Review: Corsair is an excellent brand, I've always been a satisfied customer. DDR3 is getting harder to find for these older systems, finding a 32GB kit is getting tougher. Thankfully Newegg came through at a reasonable price. Installation was a breeze, enabling XMP in UEFI was straight forward and I ran the kit through it's paces with MemTest86, zero errors found. You can't ask for much more.

Original Unique Amazing

Corsair Carbide Series Air 540 (CC-9011048-WW) Arctic White Steel High Airflow ATX Cube Case
Corsair Carbide Series Air 540 (CC-9011048-WW) Arctic White Steel High Airflow ATX Cube Case

Pros: Fantastic overall design. Dual chamber setup creates spacious building interior and allows you to keep your key components cool. Final build looks amazing with huge side panel window. The Arctic White case includes two front white LED fans that help light up the inside of the case. I plan to replace the rear non-LED fan with another white LED fan to add more lighting for the interior. Excellent cable management with rubber grommets keeps the motherboard and components looking clean and open for good air flow. Build quality is better than some reviews claim IMO. It feels pretty solid and looks/feels amazing.

Cons: This case is not without it's flaws, but overall not enough to knock off an egg. First of all is the lack of filters in 2 key locations. First is the side panel ventilation for the power supply. I am keeping this thing on my desk so it may not be a big issue, but I was surprised Corsair didn't include a PSU filter. The second key area missing any kind of filter is the bottom of the case where the hard drives mount, which brings me to my biggest complaint about this case... Hard drive mounting! The case has just 2 mounting brackets for 3.5 inch HDD's. The execution leaves a lot to be desired. The mounts are hot swappable which is really good. However, the mounts are built using a punchout design at the bottom of the case. This leaves holes in the bottom of the case, so if you don't install drives dust is likely to be sucked up from the bottom of the case. Installing the 2 drives is a smooth process and they lock into the hot swap bays pretty well. I bought this with the understanding that there are only two 3.5 inch HDD mounting points. Which is kinda sad considering the MASSIVE amount of space inside this case. Corsair includes two 5.25 inch drive bays which mount vertically. The cage is removable, which begs the question, why didn't Corsair include a cage to convert the 5.25 inch bays to hold 3.5 inch HDD's? As it is now, I opted to uninstall the optical drive cage, but it seems like a real waste of real estate. Finally, be prepared to get shocked when you open this thing up for unboxing. Not shocked like "this is a cool case" (though it really is). But shocked like "OUCH that HURT!". I've watched a few unboxing videos and Linus got shocked pretty good. I also got shocked pretty hard. That's because of the material Corsair uses for the protective cover, it's a static magnet! So unbox with care!

Overall Review: Corsair does include some filters for the case up front and on top, they are magnetic and are easily removable but stay in place very well. the 2.5 inch drive cages are removable and configuarble/interchangable so you can set it up to hold 1, 2, 3, or all 4 drives. My Samsung SSD slid right in, but the fit is a bit loose as my drive is narrow. Cooling options for this are really good, you can easily mount a thicker radiator up top.
