Nice processor, but absurdly expensive
Pros: Totally unlocked multiplier. Extremely fast even at stock speed. Overclocks great for a quad core processor.
Cons: Extremely expensive. No other real cons to it except that it drains the wallet buying it. Dealing with the heat of the proc when pushing it hard takes high end cooling to handle. OH, did I mention that it is absurdly expensive?
Overall Review: Having it run Seti at 3700 MHz with only 1.2v vcore. It has a lot of headroom left, but I need to upgrade to watercooling to really push it like I want to. I've never paid even half as much as I paid for this for a processor before. I just had a weak moment, but now that I have it I don't regret buying it (much). I'm running this on a GA-X38-DQ6, no problems.
2 bad boards in a row!!!
Pros: It has pretty blue heatsinks. Board layout is pretty decent. BUT...........
Cons: I have received 2 defective motherboards in a row. I ordered this board as a combo with an Intel 980X processor. I had also ordered a triple channel kit of Kingston Hyper X ram to go with this. After receiving the order in from Newegg, I assembled the system and it booted the first time out, but was only reading 2 sticks of the triple channel kit of ram. After doing much troubleshooting, I found that the center slots on both ram channels to be dead and wouldn't read the ram installed in them. I could get all 3 sticks of ram to be found and utilized only by installing the sticks in slots 1A, 1C and either 2A or 2C for the third stick. After coming to this conclusion, I called Newegg for an RMA and they generously let me return this dud mobo for credit and reorder a new one instead of making me wait for this first dud board to get returned to them before shipping me a replacement. Newegg did their best to help me out with the first defective motherboard. Continued below....
Overall Review: I received the replacement motherboard and immediately installed it into my new build and had the same exact problem again. Neither center ram slot would read the ram. I then figured that I must have a defective processor and RMA'ed the proc back to Intel. I received the new processor and I still had the same problem and also had to leave for work for 2 weeks. While at work, I decided to get another mobo and another set of ram for troubleshooting when I came back in and stopped at a B&M store in Houston and picked up a P6T board and some Corsair ram (3 X 2GB kit). When I got home, I subbed the Corsair ram into the P6X58D board and it made no difference. But, after flashing the P6T to a bios that supported it, the 980X ran fine and was able to run the ram correctly in triple channel mode with both kits of ram. So now I will have to fight Asus for an RMA of this second broke joke piece of junk motherboard and hope I receive one that works correctly.
good video card.
Pros: It's Nvidia.
Cons: My one con for this video card is that EVGA no longer puts a driver disc in the box with the video card. Normally that's no big problem, but I had problems with slow and interrupted download speeds on Nvidia's website, making getting a non-corrupted download problematic. Once the drivers were downloaded, the install went perfectly.
Overall Review: My son-in-law picked out this video card to rebuild an older system I had that I used to do distributed computing projects with. The processor and motherboard were still very adequate but the video subsystem was long in the tooth and slow for today's gaming. We received the card and dropped it in the system and after finally getting the video card drivers downloaded and installed, the system runs very well. My son-in-law is very happy with this purchase and the video card let's him game at high resolutions and settings without lag.
Tremendous boost in load speed
Pros: I bought this to rebuild a system for my son-in-law to make him a gaming system. I bought this to upgrade a fresh install done on a spinner hard drive. I cloned the original hard drive install onto this SSD and wow, what a difference in load speed. Now, with this SSD installed, it takes the system just 20 seconds to get to the desktop from hitting the start button on the computer. And roughly 10 seconds of that time is just the board going through the startup and POST screens.
Cons: None I can see
Overall Review: This is a worthwhile upgrade to your system if you want to improve your computer's speed and nowadays the price on SSDs has come down to where it's affordable to go solid state.
Decent for the price
Pros: Windows 7 Home Premium instead of Windows 8. Decent features for the price range. Not too much bloatware installed as compared to some other computer manufacturer's offerings. No problems uninstalling the bloatware and the included McAfee antivirus program. Setup on initial boot took a little while, but went through the procedure with no hiccups at all. Responds pretty snappily even when driving a 1920x1200 monitor with the Intel graphics. I also noticed that Asus didn't include an exhaust fan on the back side of the case, but didn't see any problems with overheating. Maybe they have an intake fan installed in the lower front of the case, but I didn't open it up to check. I did run IBT on it and monitored temps with Real Temp and the highest temps recorded during the IBT run were in the 60-70 C range, which is fine for this processor. According to my UPS system's monitoring panel, this unit only drew a little less than 100 watts at maximum load while running IBT, so it doesn't draw much power to run it.
Cons: Asus is using an older, non-efficient power supply in this unit. All you have to do to check this out is to look on the back on the psu and you see a voltage selector switch on the psu. I didn't open up the system to see who the psu manufacturer was, but I would have paid $5-10 more for a better quality, more efficient psu with active pfc correction used in this system. Also, Asus went cheap and didn't include a DVI video out port on this model. They do have analog VGA video out and a HDMI port, but it wouldn't have cost them more than $2 to have a DVI video out port installed on the motherboard. For these 2 factors, I am subtracting 1 egg from an otherwise nice machine for the price.
Overall Review: I bought this for my older brother, who is giving this to his GF as an early Christmas present and he was away at work several states away for the next month or so. This is the first store bought desktop machine I have bought since the mid 90's because I rather build my own, but he was on a pretty strict budget and I don't cheap out on components such as the psu or case. Plus, with a store bought machine, it's someone else's problem keeping it up and running if a problem happens with it. It did take me a few hours of updating Win 7 and installing my own antivirus program that I like (Avast Free) but I knew that was coming anyways. I also uninstalled the included demo/starter version of Office that came on the computer and installed Office 2010 on it, which took some extra time too.
Don't think about it; just get it!
Pros: Great colors, no dead or stuck pixels. Has 2 USB pass-through ports on it. Also swivels to use in portrait mode, which is great to use with long spread sheets. 1920x1200 resolution instead of the much more common (nowadays) 1920x1080.
Cons: None so far.
Overall Review: I bought this monitor to replace a Samsung 24" 1920x1200 monitor that the back light died on and boy, I am so glad I did. The Samsung was a TN panel and while it gave an OK picture, wasn't nearly as nice as the images shown on this monitor. I also like that this monitor has a 2 port USB pass-through, which lets me move a USB header's connection from the back side of the computer to the front where it is easily accessible. This Dell monitor also comes with a 3 year warranty instead of a 1 year warranty like the Samsung came with. Also, my old Samsung didn't swivel to portrait mode, which I find comes in very handy when working with longer spreadsheets and keeps me from having to scroll so much. If you are shopping for a 24" monitor and are looking at this one then quit thinking and buy it. You won't be sorry, believe me! This monitor is really hard to pass up, especially at the >300 price I got it at.
