New 1 KVA unit, replaces older models

Pros: The BR1000G is APC's latest commercial-use product in the 1 KVA range. Like the older products, the battery unit is 12V, 7Ah, so the rated backup capacity is about 84 Wh, and the practical capacity is probably around 60 Wh. The new battery is "sans cables" and instead has a cleverly designed, recessed pair of battery tabs that mate with a connector inside the BR1000G chassis. The warranty is 3 years, in line with the older BX series, and including the original battery.
Cons: APC must think that an LCD display is a "pro" but not to us. Any practical backup uses a software interface. We would prefer to can the LCD and save money. The APC BR1000G interfaces to the usual PowerChute software, but the kit as shipped did not include a CD, although the user guide said there would be one.
Overall Review: Newegg delivered the product to our East Coast location by UPS ground in just one business day. It is working at a customer site as a plug-and-go replacement for an older APC model BX900R that is complaining of a battery in need of replacement. Field experience with the BX900R indicates it sometime makes that complaint when the real problem is a charging circuit failure, so we're trying a battery replacement in our shop to see what happens. The BR1000G was just released in late spring, 2010, and replacement batteries are not yet available. APC has been pricing replacements in this energy range at $80 to $90, a hefty fraction of the $125 we paid to Newegg for the unit. Alternative sources, such as American Battery, have been getting $30 to $40 retail for replacements in that energy range. They will have a tougher time sourcing this unit, because it does not use standard gel-cell modules connected via power cabling to standard 1/4-inch battery tabs.
