Set Windows to Full(0-255) Range Guys!

LG W3000H-Bn Black 30" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor w/ HDCP Support 370 cd/m2 3000:1 w/ 4 USB ports
LG W3000H-Bn Black 30" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor w/ HDCP Support 370 cd/m2 3000:1 w/ 4 USB ports

Pros: Everything good said about this monitor is true. It shows all the 2560*1600 resolution. Naturally too. It expanded color gaumet is wonderful as it can actually display cherry-red. This is important!! For best picture quality set the RBG range to Full (0-255), NOT Limited(16-235), as photographs and video turns out way better. For Nividia, right-click on desktop then select Nvidia Control Panel. Then select Adjust video Color Settings, then Advanced tab. Change dynamic range to Full(0-255). Enjoy the SOTA picture quality! Use a USB HDTV tuner (<$50) works nice too.

Cons: None.

SATA Hot Swap Settings

ASUS P5Q LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard
ASUS P5Q LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Once setup correctly board is stable. Issue: Driver for SATA hot swap is not default installe in Vista, legacy IDE is. To get SATA to work never use orange, white MB ports. In BIOS disable MARVEL IDE, ExpessGate and DriveXpertControl. Configure SATA as AHCI. Then you have a chance.

Cons: To keep external USB HD drives from hanging system during boot, disable LegacyUSB. ExpessGate and DriveXpertControl are of questionable value and will automatically delete user disk data unless you know exactly what you are doing. Stay away.

Overall Review: If AHCI driver is finally installed should see DeviceManager.IDEController->Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller. Finding correct information on these issues was difficult to find. Asus FAQ and forums were of no help.

Sexy Fast Reliable Drive

SAMSUNG Black 12X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA Internal Blu-ray Combo Model SH-B123L LightScribe Support
SAMSUNG Black 12X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA Internal Blu-ray Combo Model SH-B123L LightScribe Support

Pros: I've purchased four LG Blu-ray drives and have had some very time consuming issues with them intermittently not being able to read discs. The Samsung has no such issues. The eject button and light are awesome. The door is actually clear so you can see the disc inside. Very fast and quiet! Plays Avatar with Power DVD 10. Can find found it for less too.

Cons: Other people negative reviews of an excellent drive, because of the old software (I bought an OEM of Power DVD 10 for $40 and use it on all my computers) and the evolving Blu-ray "standard".

Dedicated Tuners Usually Better

SiliconDust - HDHomeRun Network-based Dual Digital - HDTV Tuner Ethernet Interface
SiliconDust - HDHomeRun Network-based Dual Digital - HDTV Tuner Ethernet Interface

Pros: Floating tuners are available to anyone. First come first serve. Reliable operation. Works with WMV 7.

Cons: Floating tuners are available to anyone. You change channels and another user can "steal" the tuner from you in an instant! External splitter, cables, wall wart and unit itself contribute greatly to clutter. Supplied software (Quick TV) does not supply necessary Dolby audio decoder - so frequently no sound. Slower channel changing than Avermedia Duet.

Overall Review: High Definition DVRs need dedicated tuners to be reliable. The dual tuners in the internal Avermedia are better suited for HTPC based DVRs..

RAW Drive Works in Dual Docking Stations Too

SAMSUNG Story Station 2TB USB 2.0 3.5" External Hard Drive HX-DU020EB
SAMSUNG Story Station 2TB USB 2.0 3.5" External Hard Drive HX-DU020EB

Pros: Cool and quiet. The drive and case are small and first -rate. However the smartest design for home servers is to connect large hard drives to the new new generation of routers which include a USB port. I use the Netgear 3700 dual band N router which only has one port. So I tried the latest WD and Samsung 2TB drives with dual docking stations. Most docking stations handle 1.5 TB drives but 2 TB is very iffy. This removed-from-case Samsung works with the Thermaltake BlacX Duet USB docking station. The Western Digital 2TB does not. The Kingwin station does not handle either of these 2TB drives. The drive goes into a low power state by itself whether in its own case or the docking station. As an alternative I might try the Griffin 3026-SSUSB SmartShare USB which may allow each Story to be kept in its own case.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: The Netgear 3700 writes to the Story (or any other USB connected drive is very slow at 2.5MB/sec!). But for reads/serving its excellent as I could play back three DVDs at three different computers without any frame drops. So I write to the media center drives at my main ripping PC then physically move them over to the routers USB connection. Even here Esata takes 10 hours to fill a 2TB drive and USB 2.0 takes 19 hours. Whew!

Does NOT support WD 2TB Drives

KINGWIN EZD-2536 2.5" & 3.5" SATA I/II USB 2.0 Dual Bay SATA Hard Drive Docking Station
KINGWIN EZD-2536 2.5" & 3.5" SATA I/II USB 2.0 Dual Bay SATA Hard Drive Docking Station

Pros: Well built. Nice design. Works with 1.5 TB WD drives. Ample power supply.

Cons: My dream system of combing two 2TB drives containing all my home video, photographs, flac format ripped CD's and iso format movies is not to be achieved with this docking station. Attempted in vain to connect this the KingWin to my Netgear 3700 router's USB port and serve my whole house using Asus Oplay R3 Air's at each location. So I'm still searching. Note: my Samsung 2TB Story connects just fine to the router so I know its the chipset inside the KingWin which is at fault.

Overall Review: Pushing SOTA is always risky.
