Great MC Extender

Ceton Echo – Windows Media Center Extender Watch Live & Recorded TV/HDTV Access Personal Media Libraries on Any TV on Home Network, HDMI Interface, Remote Included
Ceton Echo – Windows Media Center Extender Watch Live & Recorded TV/HDTV Access Personal Media Libraries on Any TV on Home Network, HDMI Interface, Remote Included

Pros: Super quite (no fan) Does exactly what it's supposed to do, serve up Windows Media Center Always on (no startup time) Great value Video Quality Small

Cons: A little bit slower on navigation than xBox 360

Overall Review: I have 3 xBox 360s (2 Slims and a previous model) and been using them as Windows Media Center Extenders for 5 years now. But I was tired of the noise of the fans (unit and/or the power supply) and the boot up time as well as the switching apps time. This does all my extender functions as well as the xBox excepts it's just a tad slower on navigation which is no problem for me. This allows me to have xBox video apps running (like ESPN, xBox Video, VUDU, Huku, etc.) and switch back and forth to media center via my AVR (like during commercials). This also frees me up to be able to move to xBox One without losing my Extender which we can't live without. Our use of the xBox's is 60% WMC and 40% everything else.

Wireless is terrible

Polk Audio PSWi225 Wireless Powered Subwoofer Single
Polk Audio PSWi225 Wireless Powered Subwoofer Single

Pros: Bass is ok, automatic on/off is a nice feature. Very small and very cheap.

Cons: The point of a wireless subwoofer is the hassle free placement and use, thsi unit comes up way short. The wireless connection drops all the time. And you have to try unplugging the transmitter or the sub to get it back (sometimes the transmitter, sometimes the sub). It is such a hassle to do this! Wish they had put wired inputs on it so I could at least use it wired!`

Overall Review: For another room I bought a Boston Acoustics HPS 8Wi and it's rock solid (*****). No wireless issues even from another room, better & lower bass and has wired connections just in case...

WHS 2011 Experiences

HP ProLiant N40L MicroServer Server System AMD Turion II Neo N40L 1.5GHz 2-Core 2GB (1 x 2GB) DDR3 1 x 250GB LFF SATA 658553-001
HP ProLiant N40L MicroServer Server System AMD Turion II Neo N40L 1.5GHz 2-Core 2GB (1 x 2GB) DDR3 1 x 250GB LFF SATA 658553-001

Pros: This makes a great server for WHS 2011. It is small, quiet and doesn't cost much. It has 2 PCIe slots which I'm using one for USB 3.0 though I can't get that to work.

Cons: HP has not embraced WHS 2011. Given that this is arguably the best WHS 2011 server out there, you would think HP would do more to support it. There is no option to buy it as HP model with WHS 2011. There is no documentation of any type. HP tech support tried to help me but they have not knowledge of WHS 2011. I had to struggle through with various techs some who said the OS wasn't supported, others who said it was. Hardware wise,, USB 3.0 and RAID 5 are not supported. Really? 4 drive bays and only RAID 0 & 1?

Overall Review: I built a RAID 1 array with Disks 0 & 1 following the instructions then inserted the WHS 2011 DVD but the installer failed as it couldn't copy files onto the array. After many calls with HP, they could not help. I tried a Windows 7 installation as a test and it worked. So I rebuilt the array from scratch and then it worked. This is very strange. Agasin HP tech support was no help.

Best Whole House AV Receiver

YAMAHA RX-V2065BL 7.2-Channel AV Receiver
YAMAHA RX-V2065BL 7.2-Channel AV Receiver

Pros: I had steep requirements for my AV system and this unit exceeded all of them. Here's a few highlights: 1) The latest audio decoders 2) Superior sound. This did my Altec 604Gs (1975) justice. Love many of the sound modes and they're easy to select. 2) 5.1 Main Zone and 2 add'l zones. Complete control of the three zones independantly. You can even turn off the main zone and Zone 2/3 can continue to stream digital audio. 3) Networked audio from my Windows Home Server. Works out of the box becuase it recognizes WHS' Windows Media Connect protocol. 4) Internet Radio with a dizzying array of choices. 5) Both network audio choices play into any of the zones! 6) On Screen Display is (pretty) easy to use and works through HDMI! 7) Yamaha is the only brand that allows HDMI audio to feed to both the speakers and the TV. This allows me to loop the RCA audio from the TV back to the receiver so I can make my Windows Media Center PC reach all the zones!

Cons: 1) It's not easy to adjust the subwoofer volume, you have to venture into the menu system (or to adjust any speaker levels). Same for dynamic sound control (night mode). 2) Would have loved a browser interface. They could so much more with that. 3) Fully programmable presets like I had with my B&K Ref 30 this replaced.

Overall Review: 1) I wish that there was even one receiver on the market that would send digital audio (like HDMI) to other zones. HTPC owners know that only one audio souirce works at a time in Windows. 2) RF Remote control woluld be nice.

Not close to Gigabit Speed

LINKSYS EFG250 250GB EtherFast Network Attached Storage with PrintServer
LINKSYS EFG250 250GB EtherFast Network Attached Storage with PrintServer

Pros: Easy to use

Cons: Linksys no doubt put a Gigabit interface on this box to fool you into buying it as a fast NAS. It is SO SLOW! I get about 5Mbps transfer versus my new Buffalo Terastation which does 75Mbps over Gigabit (which is still a bit disappointing) So if you plan to use it for audio/video like I did, it is just worthless.

Overall Review: Wish Cisco/Linksys would stop marketing these terrible cost cutting over-marketed products!
