Subtely classy

SilverStone SST-PS07B Black Steel / Plastic with Aluminum Accent Micro ATX Mini Tower Computer Case
SilverStone SST-PS07B Black Steel / Plastic with Aluminum Accent Micro ATX Mini Tower Computer Case

Pros: USB3 case plugs. Great cooling. Lift out dust filters. Easy to work with. Enough room for all the permanently attached cables on the Stallion PSU I used in this build. Big enough for the HUGE Enermax CPU cooler I'm using in it. Cheaper than the white version. "Finned" aluminum trim on the front looks nice.

Cons: None

Overall Review: I was going to get the white version, but just before I placed my order Newegg came in with this model. Very easy case to work with. Taking off the case top to install the power supply is not a big deal. This is my first micro-ATX case. It wasn't absolutely clear to me that such cases used a standard ATX form factor power supply, since Newegg lists a few power supplies specifically for micro-ATX cases. I gambled and ordered a standard ATX PSU for it and it worked fine.

Unclear description = wrong purchase

Rosewill - Black, Ultra High Gloss Finished Micro ATX Computer Case with 400W ATX 2.2 12V Power Supply - R363-M-BK
Rosewill - Black, Ultra High Gloss Finished Micro ATX Computer Case with 400W ATX 2.2 12V Power Supply - R363-M-BK

Pros: Looks really nice. Enough room for what I wanted to put in.* I don't know about the PSU. I bought a stronger OCZ at the same time because I plan to use a 125 watt AMD Phenom and 8 gigs of RAM. (and maybe some extra fans, eh??) This is a nice case as far it goes, but see below.

Cons: * There's actually room for a 5.25" peripheral box in the second large drive bay. (My wife wanted a LOT of front panel USB connectors.) But neither the pictures nor Rosewill's site made it clear that the two large bays can ONLY be used for optical drives because of the drop down doors. That entire door system is one large plastic molding. It would take MAJOR surgery to make either bay work with anything but an optical drive. This should be made more clear in the product description. The side panel came with a small kink in the middle at the back edge. Not major, but disappointing.

Overall Review: It's been a couple years since my last build. This is a first time for me regarding anything smaller than an ATX board/case. This is also the first time I've seen a case with the pop down panels over a drive bay. Had I known these were more than simple drive bay blankers, I would have looked for a different case. (yes, I've seen some blankers in the past with fake eject buttons)

Noisy

Fractal Design Dynamic GP-12 120mm Low Noise Hydraulic Bearing Black/White Computer Case Fan
Fractal Design Dynamic GP-12 120mm Low Noise Hydraulic Bearing Black/White Computer Case Fan

Pros: Made by Fractal. I have a Fractal case with their fans in it and it is really quiet.

Cons: These fans whine horribly. I've ordered some Cougar 120's which I have currently in a Silverstone case. The Cougars are very quiet.

Overall Review: I do not recommend these fans.

Good range, jury's out on setup

BUFFALO AirStation HighPower N600 Gigabit Simultaneous Dual Band DD-WRT Wireless Router - WZR-600DHP
BUFFALO AirStation HighPower N600 Gigabit Simultaneous Dual Band DD-WRT Wireless Router - WZR-600DHP

Pros: This replaced a 2+ year old Netgear which didn't get to all parts of the house very well. The signal strength at the two usual locations not served well by the Netgear are getting full strength signals with this Buffalo. Yay!

Cons: The default firmware is the open source. Even though I had read the reviews here about the difficulty of using it, I thought this was about the 6th or 7th network I had set up so I could probably muddle through. When I finished the initial setup, I had 2 of three wired devices working, and one of two wireless devices working on the first try. But no matter what I tried, I could not get the the third wired device or the HP laptop wireless connecting to the network. I finally gave up and reflashed the firmware with the "user friendly" firmware. Getting the latest update after the reflashing took a while. And waiting 40-60 seconds everytime I wanted to submit a change to the router setup took a while longer still, once I went about setting up all the options. But even with that, the "user friendly" firmware had everything running in far less time than I invested the first night with the public domain firmware.

Overall Review: Buffalo ought to consider making the "user friendly" firmware the default.

Card good, can't find wavetable

Rosewill RC-701 - 5.1-Channel Sound Card with PCI-Interface
Rosewill RC-701 - 5.1-Channel Sound Card with PCI-Interface

Pros: Plays nicely with Win 7-64. Driver installed right away from CD, no problems. I later installed a newer driver from the Rosewill website, thinking it might have the downloadable wavetable synthesize file included. It doesn't. But the newer driver gives a better GUI frontend than what came on the CD.

Cons: I had hoped that the advertised (on the box) wavetable synthesizer might provide an improvement over what Microsoft has in Win 7. But I've been to the Rosewill download area and can't find any such file. I haven't yet sent them a message. Doesn't call for removing an egg. But if they print that on their box, they ought to follow through and have the file.

Overall Review: This is one of the few items I didn't actually get from Newegg. But the man who runs the local electonics/computer store usually gets his stock from Newegg anyway.

Pros: Very quiet and effective. Promo offer saved a few dollars.

Cons: Orange fan in black case makes the back of the case look like Halloween?

Shipping notice said it went to the wrong city. Then Digital Shopper sent me a notice that the item was RMA's and a refund would be arranged. I never asked for an RMA. Newegg contacted Digital Shopper and found out they never even sent it.
