Perfect Drop-In Motherboard

Intel BOXDG31GL LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel BOXDG31GL LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: This is the perfect "browser board". Bullet-proof BIOS, exceptionally stable, and excellent documentation.

Cons: Pretty rudimentary video... this is no "gaming board". Would also be nice if it supported 2-gig dim's.

Overall Review: This is the most cost effective and stable "internet system" board I know of. Great value and solid reliability.

Problems at ASUS

ASUS P5E-VM DO LGA 775 Intel Q35 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
ASUS P5E-VM DO LGA 775 Intel Q35 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: This board should do everything a person would want in an "internet browsing" system... if it worked.

Cons: This board had nothing but problems: The ATA support has serious issues. Loading XP-sp 2.0 was a nightmare. I finally had to hook up a SATA CDROM just to get the operating system loaded... this just isn't right! After it was running (after a fashion) there was no end of trouble loading drivers. The CD provided was completely useless... everything had to be downloaded. And all this grief was encountered with a pretty basic system (E5200 processor and Kingston ValueRAM). And don't get me started about Mordac and the rest of the deniers at ASUS support(?). I took the board back to the retailer and got most of my money back (no, it wasn't Newegg... big mistake there).

Overall Review: Save yourself a rash of money and headaches... buy an Intel board from Newegg. For a faily basic board, this product should have far fewer headaches than it does. Judging by the other feedback, it seems that ASUS may be having a serious QC problem. I, for one, will never be their guinea pig again!
