Eight years, and going strong
Pros: Reliable. I installed this in my last build, prior to retiring from the Army. Other than three GPU upgrades, its still going strong. I love this chip. Alas, it's time to build a new primary PC, but I will probably keep this in a secondary system. Its that good.
Overall Review: Recommended, if you can find it. having said that, there's surely better chips out there now.
Mobo Channel A Error
Pros: None so far.
Cons: I get an error in that it won't read both stick of memory, and I can't get into windows to run any drivers. One egg because I emailed ASRock support on 3/29 and have yet to hear a peep from them, other than their acknowledgement of my request. I've search the net for answers, and joined TweakTown forums to try to remedy this. I suspect its a simple fix, but I am 10 years removed from geekdom, so I don't what it is.
Overall Review: I'll do a new review once it works.
It Played FO4 on max, until the screen went black
Pros: I bought this for my son, who was away at Boot camp and would be returning for Thanksgiving. I did some research and settled on this system. I set it up and brought it to his graduation, and on the drive home (about 17 hours) he was able to play Fallout 4 on max, and was very happy. We were impressed by the build (solid), the temps (stayed comfortable, never got too hot), and the weight, which for a 17" screen, didn't seem so bad. It has a well-lit keyboard, and is an attractive system.
Cons: It stopped working. Black screen while the system is on. This, after maybe about three weeks of use ( Thanksgiving and Christmas leave). I did some research on the Asus ROG forum and found this is NOT an isolated instance. So far, the best answer is a BIOS flash. Unless you contact tech support. The email stated that it sounds like a hardware problem, need to RMA it. The con? IT DOESN'T WORK. Don't buy a notebook for this amount of money only to have it quit working after three weeks.
Overall Review: I do NOT recommend this. Go to the Asus forums and search for issues before buying. Then look elsewhere. I've used Asus products before, and have never been so disappointed in a product, especially since he is at MOS school and doesn't have this available. Shame on you, Asus.
Pros: According to reviews (as it never made it far enough for me to judge) it's fast. Large capacity. It died quickly. No lingering about...
Cons: It died. After futzing with errors for a week, the problem revealed itself to be the HDD. Never really had a chance to get it fully up and running.
Overall Review: One star may not be fair for one test subject. However, the test subject was mine, it was expensive, and it didn't work. In fairness, its the first bad HDD I've ever had of any maker. WDD has been good before, so I'll call them tomorrow and see what can be done.
Bytecc BT-146 FAIL
Pros: It arrived. Purchased elsewhere in conjunction with an item that Neweeg *gasp!* did not have.
Cons: The screws supplied with it DO NOT FIT. Let me repeat: the idgits who built this supplied screws that don't fit. I have a collection of PC screws, collected since 1995, and not one fit. Heaven forbid they use a standard size.
Overall Review: Shop Newegg, but buy a different brand.
