Awesome Workstation.

ASUS KCMA-D8 ATX Server Motherboard Dual Socket C32 AMD SR5670 DDR3 1333/1066/800
ASUS KCMA-D8 ATX Server Motherboard Dual Socket C32 AMD SR5670 DDR3 1333/1066/800

Pros: Tons of room. Stable. Tons of fan connections. Dual NICs. Fits in an ATX case. Works with SLI/Crossfire power supplies. (Double-check the specs). Nice mix of PCI and PCI-x slots. Nice spread out layout on the board itself. Thousands cheaper than a comparable Mac.

Cons: If you're using the upright CPU heatsinks with the fans (eg XIGMATEK HDT-S963), one fan will blow across the other heatsink, so you'll have one processor with a higher temp. Also if you're using the upright coolers the memory is under the edge of the cooler. There also aren't a lot of USB ports on this board. Most of the features on the board require an add-on card. The processors are a little close. Fan mounting on the CPUs was a trick.

Overall Review: Get traditional server CPU coolers. It *should* take most AMD coolers... the XIGMATEKs covered all AMDs with the same bracket clip. Got this machine for video editing. Two 4184 processors 64gb ram LSI 4 lane card - dual Intel SSDs in Raid 0 Quadro FX 3700 Echo Gina 3g Vista Business x64 HAF 932 Case Seasonic PSU Fast! Copied my files to my SSD raid and installed Vista 64 and two service packs under 2 hours. Copied CS5 Master Suite to raid then installed from there, CS5 complete install in less than 30 minutes. Processor temps run 28C and 31C on average in a 26C room when idling. My setup uses hard drives for file storage, the SSD RAID-0 for temp files and pagefile. (That is the best gain you can make hardware-wise at present. Don't trust it for anything you want to keep.) 3x as many cores and 8x the memory of my old machine. (it is all used in rendering) Makes Lightwave and Premiere function phenomenally. With a machine like this you're only limited to your imaginat

Most Critical Review

Bad Customer Service

APC BR900 900 VA 540 Watts 7 Outlets UPS
APC BR900 900 VA 540 Watts 7 Outlets UPS

Pros: When they work, they keep machines running during an outage.

Cons: Devices fail after repeated brown-outs. Batteries get to where they will not hold a charge if they're "on battery" for more than a few times. Customer service does not pay for the return shipping of the devices when one of them fails due to MANUFACTURER DEFECT.

Overall Review: I'm going to look for another brand rather than APC. They used to provide excellent service. In this case I have to pay for shipping of my DOA unit back to them after I already paid to have it shipped to me. If one of these is DOA I would recommend sending it back to Newegg instead of going through the manufacturer's RMA process. Had to wait 2 weeks for a working back-up after I made my initial purchase and I have to pay to ship the defective one back (with a weight of 26 lbs).

Poor quality for the price

Logitech G100s 910-003533 Black 1 x Wheel USB Wired Optical Gaming Mouse
Logitech G100s 910-003533 Black 1 x Wheel USB Wired Optical Gaming Mouse

Pros: When it worked the mouse was fairly decent. It was a corded and comfortable to use.

Cons: Cord was a bit stiff. The left button hung open after about 5 months of use. When this happened I had to leave the mouse in my app and unplug it, then quickly unpackage a replacement I happened to have lying around. For the price I would expect it to last as long as the mice that are half the price. This mouse was not as precise in Photoshop as some of the cheaper laser mice I've used. Overall I was not impressed with the quality. The plastic finish Logitech's been using of late causes a layer of build up on the buttons which can be embarrassing if someone else happens to need to touch the mouse.

Overall Review: I've had a few of the Logitech mice exhibit the left click switch failure. I had purchased this one in the hopes they used better switches in their more expensive mice (other companies do this with keyboards). I typically use the wireless mice that can be found for half the price of this one. Now I typically get 4-5 months of use out of a Logitech product, but I do use them 20 hours a day.

Lacking

Fortinet FG-40C-US FortiGate-40C Multi-threat Protection
Fortinet FG-40C-US FortiGate-40C Multi-threat Protection

Pros: Strong firewall with multiple WAN connections. Supports load balancing. Allows for multiple policies and mappings.

Cons: This package for the unit does not include any of the UTM licenses. Note that you are only buying the capability. You have to pay close to half the price of the unit per year for the service. Without the service this is no different than the Cisco RV... unit that is half the price. Additionally if you decide at some point in the future to purchase the service, they will charge you back to the date your service lapsed. If you're planning on using this for network fail-over look for something else. In my situation I have a DSL line for back-up and a Satellite connection for my primary connection. When the satellite loses its signal it does not fully go off (unlike a failed T1). This unit still sends packets to the satellite despite the lack of a connection on the other side of the gateway from the satellite. The unit is expecting for the first WAN port to go unresponsive before it will switch over to the second WAN for fail-over. Therefore you have to manually unplug the first Wan port in order to use the second wan port during a storm.

Overall Review: Mine came with an older firmware installed. I didn't update the firmware initially because we were having network issues and it required an internet connection and to login and register the machine for service. After setting up multiple internet connections I was able to connect to the service, but for some reason did not update the firmware. When I connected my provided USB cable to the device to perform the update the device went into a loop and did not recover. When I went looking for the "included Console Cable" I realized that my kit from this vendor DID NOT CONTAIN A CONSOLE CABLE. The console looks like an RJ-45 connector and a Serial Connector on the other end. Because of this I have no way of going into my unit to reset it until I get another one of these cables. When I received the box, there was no wrapping on the outside of the box, so someone could easily have removed my console cable prior to shipping. I've used the Enterprise-level Fortigate Appliances in an IT role before. They are awesome. These [units] are attempts at riding that name. While they do offer command-line functionality, much of the interface in these units are dumbed down and features are inaccessible unless you really know what you're doing via CLI.

It's not a car speaker

Pros: It has lots of storage. Comes with lots of cables. Feels pretty solid.

Cons: It's not quality control tested.

Overall Review: I bought one of these on the site named for a river. They had more reviews and this one was mislabeled as a car speaker. It's actually an external RAID enclosure with a couple of hard drives in it. Upon connecting it to my machine, I realized the Firewire 800 ports (both of them) don't work. I tried a couple of cables, tried a couple of different machines. The USB cable did.

Works Nicely

3ware Internal 9750-4i SATA/SAS 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 w/ 512MB onboard memory Controller Card, Single
3ware Internal 9750-4i SATA/SAS 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 w/ 512MB onboard memory Controller Card, Single

Pros: Fast. Stable. Reliable. Compatible with ESXi. Hardware Raid.

Cons: Bios is a little tricky to setup. Some of the phrasing is a little apocalyptic in regard to data. Gotta be fast to hit catch it in time. Doesn't come with the battery back-up.

Overall Review: I bought one of these to replace an older 3ware raid controller. Despite some of the things I read on the 3ware site this controller did not recognize the RAID from the older drives and wiped all of the info on the drives (had a 50/50 chance). Bought the 3ware CBL-SFF8087OCF-06M to go with it. Runs under ESXi flawlessly.
