Fast, Quite, and Cool

Seagate BarraCuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Seagate BarraCuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: This drive runs as fast, if not faster, than a Raptor without it's noise and heat issues. Mine, like other reviewers have stated, is benching at over 80MBps. Drive is quitest I have ever owned.

Cons: Almost hidden installed jumper.

Overall Review: Jumpering this drive at the factory to 1.5GB mode is a dumb move in my opinion. Time will tell on the durability of these P.R. of China mfg. drives. Feel much safer that Seagate provides 5 year warranty.

Not Impressed

Comments: OK. Here's what I found out so far about this combo. Ran additional benchmarks one memory and CPU set to stock speeds i.e. 200 Mhz and 2000 Mhz. All I can say at this point is board is stable and runs cool temps. Performance on the other hand sucks. This board benchmarks slower than my Humongous Poop 2800+ Barton system that only has a 333 Mhz bus. Almost all Sanda 2005 benchmarks are below 2600+ readings for this board. Performance might improve with overclocking but one should not have to overclock to get a board to run at stock parameters.

Runs Hot?

Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST1000NM0033 1TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST1000NM0033 1TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Passed Seagate diagnostic tests.

Cons: Just ran basic tests on this drive using an external eSata docking station. Drive temp was up to 40C. I know that max. temp on this drive is 60C, but 40C seems high for outside the case with half the drive exposed to air temp and light usage?

Overall Review: Will ask Seagate about this.

Doesn't run at 5 GB/s

GIGABYTE GeForce GTS 450 (Fermi) 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 SLI Support Video Card GV-N450OC-1GI
GIGABYTE GeForce GTS 450 (Fermi) 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 SLI Support Video Card GV-N450OC-1GI

Pros: Runs

Cons: This card does not run at 5 GB/s on my new Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3 m/b. My old Biostar 9500GT ran at 5 GB/s with no problems. This N450OC-1GI card is only running at 2.5 GB/s; that is PCIe 1.0 speed. Smells like the BIOS on the card is hosed.

Overall Review: Submitted tech support request to Gigabyte. Hopefully it won't be a week till I hear from them as occured when I submitted a request on my m/b. Otherwise, this card is going back to Newegg as a RMA.

This Drives Smokes - Literally!

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD322GJ/U 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD322GJ/U 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Per Everest on a AMD850 chipset w/controller set to AHCI: Avg. read = 129 MB/s (exactly what Samsung advertises). Random read = 126 MB/s. Buffer read = 224 MB/s. That is fast!

Cons: Burning smell for a couple of minutes when drive was initially plugged into external eSATA enclosure. Very unnerving. Was waiting for flames to start shooting out of drive but none came. No physical damage to any part of the drive. Remained cool to the touch. ESTOOL diagnostics showed drive was OK physically.

Overall Review: Would have RMA'd drive but extremely dislike paying for return shipping. Presently have drive installed in my tower unformatted and keeping an eye on it till I load WIN 7 on it in the future.

Great Card

Rosewill RC-219 - eSATA x 2 PCI Express NCQ Non-RAID Controller Card - Silicon Image, SATA II
Rosewill RC-219 - eSATA x 2 PCI Express NCQ Non-RAID Controller Card - Silicon Image, SATA II

Pros: Sil 3132 chipset. Hotswapable. Can be flashed to RAID 0/1/5 BIOS. 100% plug-n-play. Download latest driver via WIN Updates. Very fast I/O speeds with this card - equal to native SATA connection on my MSI K8N-SLI m/b.

Cons: Card was slightly deformed making slot insertion a bit dicey. A slight bend to the case mounting bracket fixed the issue. No eggs taken off for this since it was easily correctable.

Overall Review: Card is definitely hotswapable. I inserted my WD2500KS SATA II drive in an external docking station and device was immediately recognized by XP. To remove drive, either disconnect the drive using XP device manager or install 3rd party utility. I downloaded the free "hotswap" utility. Works like champ - you spindown the external drive on the eSATA connection. Then just disconnect the drive. Also has a nice lower toolbar icon that is identical to XP removable hardware one but red in color.
