Excellent drive

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Quiet, reasonably fast. Transferring files, I was able to reach over 40 MB/s (sustained) drive-to-drive over SATA 2 and SATA-to-GigE.

Cons: None yet.

Overall Review: This drive is my fifth Samsung hard drive. I've had other brands fail on me, but all of my Samsungs still work after more than 3 years of near-constant use. No problems working with OS X 10.5, Vista x64, XP, or Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 64-bit.

Workable, but...

Eagle INEO I-NIA302U Aluminum 3.5" Black USB 2.0 External Enclosure
Eagle INEO I-NIA302U Aluminum 3.5" Black USB 2.0 External Enclosure

Pros: Works well, compatible with both IDE and SATA drives. USB connection is reasonably fast. Attractive exterior. Inexpensive.

Cons: If you're using a SATA drive, the power connector is about 3 cm too short. You have two options: invert the drive or invert the connector board. Either way, you have to contort the SATA cable to make it work.

Overall Review: I'm not fond of the LED lights on the enclosure. They pipe blue light down both sides of the enclosure and flash when the drive is reading/writing. I'll probably disconnect them. Also, regarding the short cable, if you only want to use this with SATA drives, get a different enclosure. There's no issue with IDE drives, though.

A great laptop at a great price

Lenovo Thinkpad X220 Notebook, Intel Core i5 2520M 2.5Ghz, 4GB DDR3, 250GB Hard Drive, Windows 10 - Minor Wear
Lenovo Thinkpad X220 Notebook, Intel Core i5 2520M 2.5Ghz, 4GB DDR3, 250GB Hard Drive, Windows 10 - Minor Wear

Pros: This refurbished model looked practically brand new. It functions flawlessly right out of the box. I don't yet know the condition of the battery, but it looks ok. The 'minor wear' was a scratch on the outside of the battery, and a few smudges on the power adapter. A fresh copy of Windows 10 Home 64-bit was included.

Cons: None so far.

Overall Review: At this price, I might buy another one to replace my other laptop. I didn't see any restore disks or images, so make a full backup immediately. The installed RAM for mine is Samsung 2x2GB DDR3 12800.

Huge upgrade from stock

ZALMAN CNPS10X OPTIMA 120mm FSB (Fluid Shield Bearing) Shark's Fin Blade CPU Cooler (LGA 2011 version)
ZALMAN CNPS10X OPTIMA 120mm FSB (Fluid Shield Bearing) Shark's Fin Blade CPU Cooler (LGA 2011 version)

Pros: Huge. The size provides tons of heat transfer surface. My idle/full load cpu temps dropped from 48°C/68°C to 34°C/52°C after replacing my stock AMD cooler. I have a Phenom II X4 955, not overclocked. Room temperature here is 22°C (72°F). Quiet. Stock cooler got really noisy under load. After installing this one with two 120 mm fans, my case is now under 40 dB. This makes my keyboard the loudest part of my desktop. I'm sure I could get away with using only the one fan it came with and very little would change. Direct contact copper heat pipes. It feels like a well-made heat sink, but if you're really paranoid/obsessive, you might want to lap the contact surface.

Cons: Huge (155 mm). It says it's big, but be sure to measure the inside of your case. In mine, the top of the cooler is higher than the top of my video card. I have an Antec P180 mid-tower and it fits with plenty of room. This won't fit in most low-profile cases.

Overall Review: I used Arctic Silver Céramique 2 thermal compound. I'm sure the heat sink compound it came with is fine; I'm just a little paranoid. I didn't use the mounting bracket for the underside of the motherboard that came with this cpu cooler. I felt that the threads of the screws it came with were too small and close to tolerate the load. Instead I used the underside bracket that came with the stock cpu, removing the plastic connector on the top side, and mounting the new cooler with the old screws. If you do that, be sure you DO NOT overtighten the screws. Be gentle: finger tight plus 1/2 turn or so should be adequate. This method has the advantage of not needing to remove your motherboard from the case to install this cpu cooler.

Works great

Pros: Durable, color-coded reader ports. Reads every kind of media I've tried. USB port is helpful, too.

Cons: The indicator LED is bright; I put some electrical tape over mine because it was bothering me.

24 bad sectors after 2.1 days operation

Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD6400BEVT 640GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD6400BEVT 640GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: High capacity, low price, accurate SMART monitoring.

Cons: My drive, operating as a tertiary drive for my laptop under occasional use, developed bad sectors relatively quickly. SMART reports that there are 24 bad sectors in the drive after 2.1 days of actual drive operation.

Overall Review: I've never had a drive fail this quickly and I'll be contacting WD shortly for warranty service. Additionally, I won't be storing research data on WD laptop drives in the future. I have backups, but my plans to work while on vacation are effectively snuffed.
