Decent but be prepared for dvd issues

Pros: Lightweight, quality build from Toshiba, loud speakers, bright screen, decent speed/memory.
Cons: Besides Vista? well, apparently the CD/DVD drive in this particular machine has had many many issues. It's hit-or-miss on whether or not it will read what you put in it. I spent an hour on the phone with tech support, and their final advice was to return it as a defective unit. But I was not returning a decent laptop over a faulty drive. I was able to get it working long enough to strip Vista and put XP on, but now a replacement from eBaay is on it's way! The model dvd drive is TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633P.
Overall Review: Over all, I've always been pleased with Toshiba, and again this is a great lappy for its price. Other than the cd/dvd I'd rate this machine a 5, but alas, it gets a 4 because of the drive. After researching, there are apparently a lot of issues with this drive, and I wish Toshiba would do some kind of recall on the drives.
I would avoid this product

Pros: Highspeed fans push a lot of air Custom fan placement for targeted cooling Adjustable speed
Cons: There are a lot of loose wires dangling since the bottom is open... required some twisty ties to secure to the unit, but still catch on things. Also, my laptop just would not stay put on this thing. If it is not on a flat surface (i.e. sitting on your lap and your legs are not perfectly straight) the laptop would slide off the front even though my laptop has rubber stops on the bottom to keep it from sliding. Very very annoying. However, my most important reason for giving this one egg is this: For some reason, this laptop cooler, when underneath my laptop, would greatly degrade my wifi bandwidth. After purchasing, I noticed that I was having trouble even streaming youtube. I have a 25Mbit package and this was never an issue before. So I began to troubleshoot. I called my ISP to be sure there was a degradation in service, which there was not. I tried other wireless equipment, all of which were working as expected. I then plugged my laptop directly into my modem, and speed testing was lightning fast. So, I went back to wifi with my laptop, but without the cooler, and it was just fine. After many trial and error tests, putting the laptop on the cooler on a table, on my lap, off the cooler on the table, off the cooler on my lap... I repeated these about 15 times and every single time, when the laptop was on top of the cooler, I would max out at 4-5Mbit speedtests, and every time I took it off, I would max out at 20-22Mbit (not quite the wired speed, but is acceptable with my router and range from the router while testing). It was clearly the cooler that was bottlenecking my bandwidth! My laptop is a lenovo y510p, and of course, this may just be a coincidence where my specific laptop and this specific cooler interact in a negative way right? Well I tried the test with three other laptops: A macbook pro, and toshiba, and an acer. Same results with every one of them. I even laid an ipad on it and the same thing!! In conclusion... if your laptop will be plugged into your network and on a desktop or table, by all means this thing cools like crazy. Otherwise, if you're on wi-fi and like to have it on your lap, get something else that won't degrade your wifi signal, and doesn't have an open back with 5 wires dangling everywhere to get tangled and caught on stuff.
Maybe there's a few bad eggs out there, but I've been 100% satisfied.

Pros: Great to have a combo modem/router. Easy set up, easy admin panel to tweak reserved IP's, forward ports, etc. Wifi is as expected for any N router.
Cons: Doesn't get 300mb/s with time warner :( but i doubt i'll ever go up from 100 which works great.
Overall Review: Highly recommended. Owned for almost two years and hasn't quit yet!
