My Review 2.0

ASUS MS238H Glossy Black 23" Ring stand & Ergo-fit LED backlight LCD Monitor Slim Design 250 cd/m2 10,000,000 :1 (ASCR)
ASUS MS238H Glossy Black 23" Ring stand & Ergo-fit LED backlight LCD Monitor Slim Design 250 cd/m2 10,000,000 :1 (ASCR)

Pros: *I'm updating my previous review about problems with MS238H and a misconception about its inability to work properly with Win7 64-bit* We were apparently wrong in our initial assessment and came to find out that the monitor was in fact defective. Without rehashing what's already been posted in my previous review I'll just say that having this monitor fully functioning... very pleased! For the price and the inclusion of the LED backlight you can't go wrong. Besides the functionality of the monitor it just looks really nice and is very aesthetically pleasing. I have to take this time as well to thank Santiago of Asus tech support for all of his help. He went above and beyond what I would consider my typical tech support experience. He tried his best to troubleshoot the issue with us until finally narrowing it down to a specific defect in the monitor itself that couldn't be fixed. I RMAed and couldn't be happier with the monitor now that I have it fully functioning.

Cons: No one enjoys RMAing, was my first and I knew eventually it would happen just given the nature of manufacturing and shipping. My entire machine, as well as previous builds, are all bought from newegg so for this to be the 1 out of 30-35 times I've ordered I can't be too upset. In my previous review I spoke highly of the ring-stand but with this replacement the setup seems less sturdy and the monitor leans further back, not a deal breaker but I can see now why others complained. I guess each stand is a dice roll but not worth RMAing or deducting an egg. There was another guy (can't remember his name) from Asus tech support that I spoke with between phone calls with Santiago that read the notes on my call and told me I needed a new motherboard which had absolutely nothing to do with the issue... then he was rude for me pointing that out which is just a waste of both our time. Either way not worth deducting an egg but worth mentioning. It's a dust/fingerprint magnet.

Overall Review: Regardless of the positive and negative experiences of getting the monitor, the 5 eggs are for the quality of the product: No dead pixels, beautiful colors and response time, excellent for gaming and movies, all around top notch monitor. It's extremely thin and very light as well, for me it works but it may be a con for others. Only 1 HDMI port, not 2 although I knew that before purchasing the monitor, and HDMI to DVI cable and one VGA port with VGA cable but no HDMI to HDMI cable... they're not expensive it just seemed kind of silly. The Pros far, far outweigh the cons so if you're considering this monitor just go ahead and buy it. And rest assured there are no issues between the MS238H and Win7 64-bit.

Most Critical Review

Win7 or ASUS?

ASUS MS238H Glossy Black 23" Ring stand & Ergo-fit LED backlight LCD Monitor Slim Design 250 cd/m2 10,000,000 :1 (ASCR)

Pros: First off, this monitor is sexy before you even power it up. The ring stand has grown on me and the viewing angle is perfect for my setup. Currently only VGA works properly but going from a 19" CRT to this.... it's great just in VGA. The colors are bright and vibrant in VGA mode and the video is definitely crisp but without being able to utilize the HDMI side I can't really give an accurate review of its overall performance.

Cons: Win7 64-bit and this monitor do not like each other and currently there is no fix. What's the most strange is that I get "no signal" in HDMI mode from boot but my card (ATI 4670 HD), the monitor and the HDMI cable are all working (each independently tested on other machines). The monitor shows up as a "non-PnP" device and there are no drivers. What is even stranger is that the monitor will work in HDMI mode if I first plug in a PnP friendly monitor and then plug the MS238H in after win7 has already loaded. So for now I have a moderately expensive VGA monitor with hopes of becoming a very reasonably priced HD monitor. ASUS support so far for me has been non-existent. I've called them and each time the person asks to take my name and number for a return call or have been hung up on. I've posted on their support forums as well as sent ASUS support team an email explaining my issues with no response either, not even the generic "make sure your monitor is plugged in" response.

Overall Review: I understand that new platforms in 64-bit tend to be troublesome so I expected some tweaking to be necessary before I'd get to really enjoy the monitor but this is pathetic. Even if this is an issue that lends more towards pointing blame at microsoft for being the culprit the fact that there is no documentation or warnings about the issue on ASUS' side has left me feeling like I wasted $200+. I'm going to wait and see how the issue pans out over the next week/s and update this review but for now I can only offer 2 eggs because its basically a flatscreen vga monitor w/ led backlighting.
