Cheap, effective, LOUD

Rosewill RCX-Z2 7 blades 80mm reverse ball bearing fan CPU Cooler
Rosewill RCX-Z2 7 blades 80mm reverse ball bearing fan CPU Cooler

Pros: The pins on my stock cooler that came with my Core 2 Duo so many years ago wore out when I tried to move it to yet another motherboard and they finally snapped. I bought this to replace it and it was definitely a wise choice. Not only was it easier to install than the stock coolers ever were, but it's more effective.

Cons: Oh man. It's so loud. My formerly quiet HTPC is now almost as loud as my box fan on the medium speed setting. Thankfully I run that fan almost 24/7 so it covers up (more like combines with) the noise, but if you're looking for something to fit a machine that sits quietly in your living room, look elsewhere.

Overall Review: I actually doubt this cooler will last longer than a couple of years. Anything that loud has to be running inefficiently, so it's bound to wear out before too long.

Looks nice, limited protection

Case-Mate Barely There Case for HTC Inspire 4G / Desire HD (Glossy White)
Case-Mate Barely There Case for HTC Inspire 4G / Desire HD (Glossy White)

Pros: This case looks pretty snappy, especially on the Inspire. I find the plain metal look pretty boring, so this made my phone look much better. It provides a decent amount of protection to the back of the phone, although it's less about shock absorption and more about scratch protection.

Cons: This case provides absolutely zero protection to the front of the phone. If you drop it and it lands on the front, it will damage the phone. The case is also weak at the corners, as I found out when I dropped the phone and cracked the plastic. Better it than my phone, I suppose.

Overall Review: It's no Otterbox, but what do you expect for the price?

Would have been great, except...

ZOTAC GeForce GT 630 1GB GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 Low Profile Ready Graphics Card ZT-60408-20L
ZOTAC GeForce GT 630 1GB GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 Low Profile Ready Graphics Card ZT-60408-20L

Pros: * Decent performance for the price in video games.

Cons: * Massive DPC latency spikes * Bulky, awkwardly-shaped heatsink * DDR3, not GDDR3

Overall Review: I bought this video card to power an HTPC I had pieced together out of several older parts. Specifically, I bought it to replace an AMD Radeon 6570 whose fan was making an obnoxious amount of noise. The video card performed admirably in the (admittedly casual) video games I threw at it, but I kept noticing a weird issue where the audio would cut out, become distorted, and desync slightly whenever I would watch Netflix, YouTube, or any other video. It also occurred when listening to music, and seemed to be triggered by doing pretty much anything--leaving the mouse completely still would fix the issue, but as soon as I would move the mouse or hover over any kind of UI element (in Windows, in the browser, anywhere), the audio would stutter and glitch out. After much research, I figured out that I was experiencing massive DPC latency spikes due to some kind of device in my system. 3 hours of research, driver tweaking, and trial/error later, I tracked the issue down to this card. When I put the noisy Radeon back in the machine, the audio problems went away. Bottom line: do not buy this video card for an HTPC, or if you plan to watch internet videos like Netflix or YouTube. I doubt the issue will occur for everyone but the problem was bad enough that I had to pretty much write off my $60 purchase of this card as a waste.

Great sound of out a small package

SONY Violet MDR-EX58V/VLT In-Ear EX Earbud with Volume Control (Violet)
SONY Violet MDR-EX58V/VLT In-Ear EX Earbud with Volume Control (Violet)

Pros: I have owned several sets of earbud headphones in the past few years. Most of them were absolute garbage, but a few companies know how to make them right. Apparently Sony is one of those companies. These earbuds have great bass and crystal-clear highs. They cancel just enough noise without falling victim to the classic "oblivious earbud user" category.

Cons: While the lows and the highs are great, the mid-range tends to get a little lost. I find that this hurts rock music the most, while techno and hip-hop type sounds work much better with these earbuds.

Overall Review: I wish Newegg had these in more colors than just purple and red. I prefer my earbuds to be more inconspicuous, so I prefer black.

Smooth, accurate, impossible to keep clean

RAZER DeathAdder RZ01-00151400-R3U1 Black Wired Optical Precision Gaming Mouse - 3.5G Infrared Sensor
RAZER DeathAdder RZ01-00151400-R3U1 Black Wired Optical Precision Gaming Mouse - 3.5G Infrared Sensor

Pros: This mouse held up to its reputation well. It's smooth, it's accurate, and it even looks snazzy. The thumb buttons have a very satisfying click to them and the size is perfect for my fairly large hands. The buttons are taller than many thumb buttons on gaming mice, but they have enough resistance that you don't click them accidentally. I personally find that they're perfectly spaced and perfectly sized.

Cons: Clicking the mouse wheel is a little difficult without also rolling the wheel a little. Don't assign anything important to Mouse 3 in FPS games, because you'll be switching weapons while trying to hit it. Also, this mouse is freaking impossible to keep clean. The surface and texture on the top of the mouse are fine, although I'm already noticing wear on the left mouse button where my finger sits (thanks, Diablo 3!). The problem is the glossy surface that is the rest of the mouse. Not only does it attract fingerprints like crazy, but if your hands aren't 100% pristine and perfectly clean, it feels sticky. If you like to eat while you game, be sure to keep a washcloth or something nearby to wipe down the mouse afterwards. I recommend washing your hands before using it; you'll keep it clean and shiny much longer that way.

Overall Review: I actually bought this to replace a much more expensive (over $100) gaming mouse that I got for Christmas. That mouse was defective from day one--there's a bit of plastic covering the laser hole. I won't mention who made the mouse, but let's just say they've always kind of been known for shoddy products, so I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. This mouse is just as responsive as that mouse while also tracking correctly (a feature I find pretty important in a mouse).

A Beast (in a good and bad way)

Thermaltake A4022 92mm CPU Cooler
Thermaltake A4022 92mm CPU Cooler

Pros: This cooler is a beast. It manages to keep my Phenom X3 cool while also being very quiet, especially for a unit its size. It fits as snugly as you would expect.

Cons: The massive size of this cooler puts it in the direct path of several of my cables in my case. The fan guard is nowhere near big enough to block these cables, so if you're not good at cable management, be careful. Also, if you have a fan on the side of your case, it is likely to either hit the cooler (due to its height) or the power cable going to it is likely to get caught in the fan. Again, if you don't know how to manage your cables, you'll want to watch out for this.

Overall Review: It's sharp! Don't cut yourself on it.
