Speedy

Intel X25-M Mainstream 2.5" 160GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SSDSA2M160G2XXX
Intel X25-M Mainstream 2.5" 160GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SSDSA2M160G2XXX

Pros: Speed! This drive is super-fast, and that was the primary selling point. It is a significant improvement over ever previous boot-drive I have ever used.

Cons: The price is still relatively high, but I chose to make the purchase, and it is worth it in my system.

Overall Review: I downloaded the latest Intel drive utilities, which allow scheduling TRIM. Any advice on the ideal frequency for this will be handy, wherever I may find it...

Most Critical Review

Spoke too soon -- Major problems, Gigabyte non-responsive

GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Supports latest intel CPUs

Cons: Memory support is completely fouled up with this board. I got 12 GB DDR3 at 1333 (GSkill, on Gigabyte's approved list), but the BIOS only registers 8 GB. Win 7-64bit reports "12 GB (8 GB usable)." I researched this online, and found that many others had the same problem. I updated the BIOS to the latest release. This temporarily fixed the problem. "Temporarily" in this case means for two boot cycles. Called Gigabyte for tech support, and that is where the problem really got ugly. Have yet to speak with anyone at Gigabyte TS, but got an earful from a hostile representative that shocked me. I cannot believe any company would allow such horrific behavior by their employees.

Overall Review: Gigabyte has had good products which I have used in the past. This one is the first with such an unbearable problem, and the first I have not found the solution on my own. Gigabyte's personnel at their USA phone support location have SERIOUS issues, and have soured me to this brand. I will get a resolution, or it will absolutely cost Gigabyte much more than the price of a motherboard. No customer should ever suffer the hostility Gigabyte has shown me in this matter.

Shame on Newegg

CORSAIR XMS3 12GB (6 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model HX3X12G1600C9 G
CORSAIR XMS3 12GB (6 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model HX3X12G1600C9 G

Pros: The memory is fine; Corsair is a good company.

Cons: Newegg shocked me. They typically have good service, and have earned repeat business from me. But one of the six memory sticks in this package was defective, and I asked Newegg for help in resolving that. I was instructed to send back the one defective stick as an RMA for replacement. Newegg received the stick, then did not send a replacement and did not contact me. After a couple of weeks, I inquired about the status. They said they would not replace it, and that now the RMA period had expired (due to their inaction). Shameful.

Overall Review: Newegg will either clean up their act, or trouble is coming.

Valuable Tool for Data Storage

Thermaltake BlacX Duet (ST0014U) ABS 2.5" & 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 2.0 & eSATA Dual Hard Drives Docking Station
Thermaltake BlacX Duet (ST0014U) ABS 2.5" & 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 2.0 & eSATA Dual Hard Drives Docking Station

Pros: This product does just what it advertises. It is a very handy way to take advantage of the low cost of high-capacity (e.g. 2TB) hard disk drives.

Cons: The cheap feel of the plastic enclosure, as noted in other reviews. I don't expect to be putting this device through any trauma that will cause it to break, but would have appreciated a sturdier feel. Also, please NOTE: eSATA compatibility is an issue; see "Other Thoughts."

Overall Review: Thermaltake does indicate that eSATA requires "port multiplier" function to see both drives. This is an important consideration, as most motherboards don't seem to support that function. I have the ASUS P6X58D Premium with the latest BIOS and drivers from their support site. The mobo includes the latest intel chipsets that can support port multiplier function, but ASUS does not support it. I have two options: use USB, or buy an additional eSATA card that actually does support port multiplier. I will take the latter option, but that will add forty-five bucks to the effective price of my mobo. Final thought: newegg is a great vendor. Kudos!

Solid Performer, with Trade-offs

ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: This board supports the latest CPUs and features like USB 3 and SATA 6Gbps. It has the typical ASUS "AI" tweaker, which I set to "auto" and got perfectly acceptable and reliable results. It registers memory properly, which was not the case with the Gigabyte board I first purchased but returned in exchange for this one.

Cons: Although the board has the ICH10R chipset, it does not support eSATA port multiplier function. I learned this after attaching a Thermaltake Duet eSATA enclosure. Research indicated I should attempt updating drivers and BIOS, which I did with no change in the lack of port multiplier support. USB is a workaround for that specific issue, but I just bought a Raidon eSATA add-in card instead. The chipset on this board can support the feature; ASUS just doesn't provide driver support for it.

Overall Review: Everything in engineering involves trade-offs, and this board is no exception. It includes the features I wanted (see "Pros"), but also includes extra features for extra expense. It's not in "the sweet spot" of price v. performance for me, therefore, but it was the best option I found currently.

Very Solid X58 Mobo

ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: This board works very well with the latest 1366 CPUs and DDR3 memory. It has a solid BIOS with somewhat "intelligent" automated settings, and a high level of user manual control.

Cons: Doesn't boot from SATAII-attached SSD with any automatic settings; requires user to override those settings and force the correct boot device.

Overall Review: I got this to replace a Gigabyte mobo that would not work. NewEgg proved again they deserve my business, and they will continue to get my business.
