Be open minded, its much better than XP

Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit Home Premium for System Builders Single Pack DVD
Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit Home Premium for System Builders Single Pack DVD

Pros: I've heard many of the criticisms of Vista out there, but have always been baffled by them. Almost every complaint someone has can usually be fixed in about a minute. I disabled UAC the first day, right through windows options. Not sure about older hardware/software, but I've had almost no problems at all with drivers and such. Any problem I did have could usually be fixed by a workaround. Keep in mind that this is for 64 bit, too, so its probably the least supported version, yet works great. Extremely easy to install. Takes 1 minute to change power options, Pete... Another key complaint is memory hogging. The idea it's using is that unused memory is being wasted, so it reserves your idle memory for applications you run often, making them fast when you start them. When something like a game requires more RAM, Windows lets go and free's enough up. Works well.

Cons: I've had the occasional bluescreen. Not sure if its Vista, or hardware related. Be aware that 32 bit programs will take up more RAM on a 64 bit OS.

Overall Review: I have 2gb of RAM, and a E6750 cpu. For vista, more ram definitely means more performance. 2gb seems like a good amount. You'll be able to get away with 1gb, but with prices these day, it's well worth it to spend a measly $30 more for a huge performance boost. I plan on getting 8gb eventually, should be great.

OCZ Platinum Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 1000 (PC2 8000) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2P10004GK

Pros: I got two sets of these, so now I'm running 8gb under Vista Ultimate x64. Nothing slows down at all, with all the features you want enabled. I have my pagefile disabled too. I like to run them at a 1:1 ratio of my cpu, which is overclocked, so they're running at 850Mhz and 5-5-5-15, with almost no overclocking of them. Ran Windows Memory Diagnostic tests and Memtest tests extensively, no errors found.

Cons: Can't think of anything. Only that if you want 2 sets, you can only use the rebate for one.

MSI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card R4850-T2D512
MSI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card R4850-T2D512

Pros: Awesome power. I can run almost all my games at completely max settings, and get playable frame rates. I'll usually just dock the AA and AF a little to keep 60 fps the whole time. And cheap! A couple months ago, you had to spend somewhere around 400 dollars to get one of Nvidias best cards. Now you can get this for 150 and do even better. MSI also has a good warranty, and the web page is easy to navigate.

Cons: I get this buzzing sound from my card sometimes. It's not the fan(I use a heatsink), but it appears to be a capacitor that is not completely stable. Oddly though, I only hear it when playing Hellgate London. It'd be a bit of a hassle to replace the stock cooler and send it back for repairs though, I just hope it doesn't blow and take the rest of my computer with it.

Overall Review: Rather then deal with either the heat from the stock fan speeds, or the noise by ramping them up, I put a Thermalright HR-03 GT heatsink on it. Without a fan, it keeps the temperature the same as the stock fan. When I put the side of my case on with my side fan, it blows right onto the gpu and heatsink, so now it idles at 40 and maxes at 70. Great cooling with no noise at all.

Great

SAMSUNG 19" a-si TFT/TN WXGA+ LCD Monitor 2 ms (GTG) D-Sub, DVI-D 906BW
SAMSUNG 19" a-si TFT/TN WXGA+ LCD Monitor 2 ms (GTG) D-Sub, DVI-D 906BW

Pros: No dead pixels. After hooking up a DVI cable, and running Adobe Gamma, the display is a perfect balance. Matte screen, not one of the annoying glossy ones. No problems with response. The frame looks very nice, especially with my nice glossy white speakers.

Cons: Don't be fooled by the "2000:1" contrast ratio. That's using dynamic contrast. Meaning if it's displaying something dark, it dims, and if it's displaying something bright, it brightens. That's not contrast at all... The actual contrast is something like 600/700:1, which is just fine for computer use. I have also noticed ghosting, but only if I really concentrate and know where to look. You don't notice it otherwise. Also, no included DVI cable, as repeated a million times.

Overall Review: I have my display settings on custom, with 50 brightness and 50 contrast.

Great cpu

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 - Core 2 Duo Conroe Dual-Core 2.66 GHz LGA 775 65W Processor - BX80557E6750
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 - Core 2 Duo Conroe Dual-Core 2.66 GHz LGA 775 65W Processor - BX80557E6750

Pros: Got this for my new college system (Vista, 2gb ram), and it works great. Have had no problems with it at all. Anything you want to do with it, it will handle very well. Don't need to spend $100 more for marginal performance increase. Excellent at over clocking. I got this to 3.4GHz with stock cooling.

Cons: Stock fan isn't very great at cooling, nor noise (comparatively). It'll do fine, but for my next year I'm getting an Ultima-90 with a Scythe fan so it doesn't seem like my computer is too noisy for my non-desktop roommate.

Overall Review: Bought this August 2007 for about $210.

Great quality

Logitech Z-4i 40 Watts 2.1 Speakers
Logitech Z-4i 40 Watts 2.1 Speakers

Pros: Great quality sound. Not tinny, like I've heard cheap speakers can sound. Attractive looking on your desk. Remote works great and is incredibly handy. Plus, subwoofer doubles as a foot rest.

Cons: The halfway mark for the bass adjuster is already too much, I began to notice after a couple days that everything was a bit too bassy. I just turned it down to about a quarter.

Overall Review: This is a great little setup. 2.1 sound is the way to go for computer use, in my opinion.
