Great eye candy, just be careful

Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit Ultimate for System Builders Single Pack DVD
Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit Ultimate for System Builders Single Pack DVD

Pros: It's beautiful to look at. Installed easily on my new harware (Q6600/Foxconn A35-S). Some re-learning coming from XP, but so far I like it, particularly the photo gallery application.

Cons: Note the OEM version (others?) keys off your motherboard BIOS to determine if you've changed your hardware. I found this out the hard way; after flashing a BIOS update it invalidated my Windows activation. I had to call Microsoft and request a code for activation. They didn't hassle me, at least this time, but this is disturbing.

Overall Review: As an honest person, I'm pretty angry that Microsoft treats me as a potential criminal for merely updating my firmware. Am I supposed to avoid installing updates on my computer for its entire lifetime? Seriously, it's enough to make me consider Apple or Linux. It's otherwise a good product, but if you decide to get it at least wait the full 30 days to activate on a new system until you've loaded the latest BIOS, video drivers, etc.

Wouldn't recommend

Seagate BarraCuda 7200.12 ST3750528AS 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Seagate BarraCuda 7200.12 ST3750528AS 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Good value, if it works.

Cons: Bought 4 of these for new Windows 7 box to create 2 RAID 1 volumes. After 4 days one of them started the well-known "click of death" behavior--with a loud "click-clack" about once a second, slowing down the system significantly. RMA'd it and installed the replacement, which immediately started the same behavior. RMA'd it again and--so far--appears to be working fine. Can't say I'm that confident it will keep doing so at this point, but at least it's RAID 1. On my last machine I had a Seagate 250 GB drive (also RAID 1 thankfully) fail after about a year; I thought this was a fluke, but apparently not. If this fails, I'll probably look for another brand. Come to think of it, I'll probably look for another brand anyway the next time.

Overall Review: Can't really knock Newegg here. RMAs went smoothly. I'd prefer to not be out another $23 for shipping, but that's how it goes.
