GIGABYTE GA-X48-DS4 LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-X48-DS4 LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Excellent board. Very high quality, and everything works out of the gate unlike another manufacturer I'd previously tried. Dual-Bios means that if you blow and overclock it will reset to defaults but save your settings so that you can go back in and tweak. This board has my E8400 (3.0GHz) running at 3.97GHz at pretty low voltages. I've no doubt that if I was willing to juice it I could get 4.2 GHz stable, but I'm somewhat more cautious than some. The ram is running at DDR2 1061, which is pretty impressive I think.

Cons: None really... some of the utilities seem a little pointless, and the little LED bar to indicate workload on the motherboard is just silly..

Overall Review: You won't regret this board. A little pricier than the consumer class boards, but it's luxury all the way. I haven't used the Esata connectors or firewire, and haven't used the onboard sound but it's about as good as you get for that I'm told. No problems with my X-Fi.

an exercise in frustration

EVGA 132-CK-NF78-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
EVGA 132-CK-NF78-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: It has a great feature spec for a pretty good price. Nice BIOS error code readout... unfortunately you need it. Good forums for help and talking about things.

Cons: I was engaged in a constant stream of RMAs with the manufacturer as 2 of the boards would show up and immediately progress to a BIOS error. a third board booted up and I was watching temps in the BIOS when it shut itself down (no, the board wasn't overheating) and never came back. One of the boards actually worked for 2 days... I got Vista installed, some of my software, I was happy as a clam. Then I rebooted and got a BIOS error... it never recovered.

Overall Review: It's not just me... there are a lot of people that go through 2-3 motherboards before getting one that works for them. Once it does, they're quite pleased. I eventually decided that I couldn't do it anymore (I've been computerless for over a month) and just bought an Intel chipset board instead.

Rebate scam

Thermaltake Level 10 Series Level 10 GTS Snow Edition White SECC ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Thermaltake Level 10 Series Level 10 GTS Snow Edition White SECC ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Easy to work with, a lot of space, good airflow, attractive, drive bays allow me to get rid of my external backup drive (pull the drive slightly to make sure it's not plugged in normally.)

Cons: Rebate scam is really starting to tick me off, and Thermaltake should be ashamed of allowing their rebate processing company to do this stuff. This is the second rebate in a row (first was Norton, now it's Thermaltake) claiming that something wasn't submitted and forcing you to jump through EVEN MORE hoops to get the rebate that you're entitled to. My invoice was in the package, just like with Norton I had the UPC in the package. They're simply hoping that you give up and let them keep the money. Your Rebate was not approved for the following reason(s) - Copy of Receipt/Invoice or Packing List is missing Our decision to not approve your rebate claim was based upon examination of the documents that we received from you. If you wish to view all documentation you may simply click on this link <link> However, the rebates sponsoring manufacture/reseller has authorized us to offer you one additional opportunity to resubmit for this rebate claim. There is only one exception to resubmitting, and that is, if your rebate claim was denied due to being outside of the allowable time frame, then unfortunately you are not eligible to resubmitt. For those of you that are eligible to resubmitt, kindly follow the following steps: 1 - Kindly click on <link> to resubmit. 2 - Once you complete Step #1, simply reprint and sign your rebate application from the Rebate Status page by clicking on the link that reads "Print Your Rebate". 3 - Include any missing documentation and/or information that we have listed above as the reason(s) for your claim being denied. 4 - Send your printed rebate along with all required documentation to the PO Box address indicated on the rebate application. For your convenience the rebate application contains a mailing label with the preprinted address. 5 - In order for your claim to be re-considered, you must to resubmit within 30 days from the date that your original rebate application was declined. 6 - For all customer service inquiries, please call:800-286-9146 Mon. - Fri. 9-6 pm (EST) or send an email to: [email protected].

Overall Review: In summary, if a rebate is making you think of buying a Thermaltake case as opposed to another manufacturer, skip the aggravation and get the other one. Until Thermaltake tells their rebate processor to cut it out and treat their customers properly I can't really recommend bothering.

GIGABYTE GA-X48-DS4 LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-X48-DS4 LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Great board.. no problems at all. The reboot/reset/reload if a bad BIOS setting is really nice and makes fine-tuning very easy you you don't have to clear the CMOS and start everything from scratch.

Cons: Some of the BIOS settings are not well-documented at all... clock skew, memory performance controls, etc. Hint... Extreme for the memory is huge.

Overall Review: "3rd RMA - Motherboard in endless reboot loop after a successful (so @BIOS says) BIOS update to F8. Avoid the F8 BIOS at all costs." There IS no F8 BIOS... F2 is the latest as of 7/18. I think you were burning a BIOS for a DQ6 to this thing... Here's the bios for this board http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=2810
