Works great!

LevelOne GSW-0807 Gigabit Switch
LevelOne GSW-0807 Gigabit Switch

Pros: Does what it says it will. Easy set up, with a sideways power block to save space on my strip. All 8 ports work and the lights aren't too bright to distract me at night. Plus it's got a snazzy design to boot.

Cons: None. It's a switch, it works or it doesn't. This one works.

Overall Review: Bought it for a WHS. Now everything just seems to run smoother in my little subnet. I need to upgrade my router next and see if my whole network will go faster. Will deffinitly keep an eye out for more levelone products!

Great price, so-so item

Uniden DECT1363-2BK 1.9 GHz Digital DECT 6.0 2X Handsets Cordless Phones
Uniden DECT1363-2BK 1.9 GHz Digital DECT 6.0 2X Handsets Cordless Phones

Pros: These were a great price and much cheaper then replacing the batteries on my old phones. They work great, I have not had to switch a channel yet and they feel solid.

Cons: The main base looks like it can be hung from a wall. However my package didn't come with the bottom plastic piece needed to mount it to the wall. I read the instructions and nothing mentions it. So I'm guessing it’s something I'd have to find on my own. The other egg deduction is because of the ringers. Why is it that a phone no longer sounds like a phone? Granted these things are annoying as all h311, and I always hear it, but I wish the ringers would sound like a regular phone if I so wanted.

Overall Review: I'm still not sure if I should have an extra plastic piece to mount the main base on the wall. However, I ripped the box up to throw it out and could not figure out where they would have even put it!

It's windows 7, you need to get rid of XP already!

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit

Pros: I ordered this to go back to 7 on a custom desktop. I was lucky enough to be a part of the beta about 2 years ago, so I knew my rig could run it. My XP install was taking about 15 min to start from a cold boot, so it was time to upgrade. The price was finally at an acceptable point so I pulled the trigger. Installing 7 is the smoothest OS install experience I have had yet. Drivers are just found, devices just work and it looks so pretty! Plus the 64 bit version now sees all 4 gig of my ram. Specs: Asus P5q pro mobo, C2D E8500, 4 gig ram, Radeon HD 4850, 2.5 tb hd, dual screens.

Cons: The price does seem to be a pain, but it needed to be done. The dual screen options are still limited, and getting any lower version would take away RDC. There still also seems to be a limited amount of 64 bit software to utilize the hardware, but that's not a big deal, though once can dream

Overall Review: XP is a dyeing virus riddled mess. Get rid of it and upgrade to windows 7 now! Vista works, but still has strange headache and within another 2 years, I bet Microsoft will want to forget about both. If XP was 98, then Vista is millennium (Yes, I unfortunately tried to run a machine with that garbage on it). That makes 7 the new XP! Trust me; I had my mom using the beta. I let her use my desktop while her laptop was getting repaired. I never told her it had a new experimental OS on it. She was able to do all she needed to do and more without having to stop and ask me for anything. She also easily plugged in her camera, got the photo’s she wanted, emailed them and then loaded up her MP3 player with new songs. I had never installed any of them on my machine. This is the same lady that still has issues with face book! After seeing her fly through 7 without a single hiccup I was sold. Get it now, put it on all of your pcs and live a better, simpler, tech life.

Look for a deal

acer Aspire Easystore Tower Intel Atom Processor 230 1.6Ghz 2GB 1TB System OS : Microsoft Windows Home Server Network Client OS : Windows Vista / Windows XP AH340-UA230N
acer Aspire Easystore Tower Intel Atom Processor 230 1.6Ghz 2GB 1TB System OS : Microsoft Windows Home Server Network Client OS : Windows Vista / Windows XP AH340-UA230N

Pros: I bought this off an auction with 3.75TB in it for less then here. After getting it home, I swapped the 750GB drive for a WD 1TB drive. My initial thoughts were disappointing. The WHS Connector seemed limited and the MacAfee AV was annoying. However, once I RDC'd into the box, I was greeted with the standard windows interface. I was able to remove MacAfee, install Tversity and the K-lite codec’s. Going back to the Connector software, I was able to go into the settings and change the password requirements so my XP box could keep its simple password. The main thing is to run all of the updates and look around in the settings. All of the issues I have read about seem to be from people who are easily frustrated or have a lower tech skill level. Everything I want to do can be found by either looking around in the settings or by remote desktop connection. Windows 7 was even easier to set up. I now have 2 machines backing up to the server while storing and sharing my media across 3 consoles.

Cons: Though it seems to be aimed as a simple set up and go device, it is not. It took a little bit of time to figure it out and get it to do what I want it to do. The MacAfee software was not updated and constantly caused 'network health' issues. It would see my external HD that I use for work and want to add that to the backup queue. If it was unable to back up a machine within a week it would give a separate network health issue. Though that may not be such a bad thing. Though I wish it was a raid set up, I did not pay the bigger bucks for one, so I am happy enough with the duplication. The only reasons I am removing 1 egg is because it can be daunting to set up and use. Also because I have only had it running for about a month now.

Overall Review: If you are going to use a device like this, make sure your home network is set up correctly. I have my office set up with this, my desktop and 2 consoles. All of them are connected via a gigabit switch I picked up from Newegg for 25 bucks. I can stream 1080p video while it backs up my files and I am running exe's off of the server, without a single hick up. I have another Xbox 360 in my living room running from an older Linksys wireless router. It is only a 10/100, so the video transcodes at a lower bit rate. I have a feeling once I upgrade the router it will be fine. If you can get a good deal like I did, I would buy this in a heartbeat. Take your time with it and play around. Aside from some minor issues it tends to blow out of proportion, it does exactly what it is supposed to. Back up and share a household worth of files. Once I get rid of comcast, I plan on installing the Orb software for offsite media viewing. I may update the review once I have those few things accomplished.
