Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 - Core 2 Quad Quad-Core 2.66 GHz LGA 775 95W Processor - BX80580Q9400
Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 - Core 2 Quad Quad-Core 2.66 GHz LGA 775 95W Processor - BX80580Q9400

Pros: Vista 64 is flying on this CPU. Load time is pretty good, OS and apps are very responsive. Switching between apps, games, browser and back is almost instant. After playing for few days at 2.66GHz (333x8), I overclocked it to (400x8=3.2GHz) and it runs very cold even with the supplied cooler. The trick is actually in the CPU - it looks like it constantly monitors the load and when you don't need the extra power it runs at the lower multiplier (x6 instead of x8). So when I type these review in browser the CPU freq is 400x6=2.4Ghz. And when I run a game it's 400x8=3.2GHz. I think this is pretty smart!

Cons: None so far.

Overall Review: After upgrade (q9400+Asus P5Q3) I compared the perf to my frend's new i7-920 and to be honest in the blind test I wouldn't know which one is q9400 and which one is i7 920.

Most Critical Review

Not reliable.

Transcend 16GB Secure Digital High-Capacity (SDHC) Flash Card Model TS16GSDHC6
Transcend 16GB Secure Digital High-Capacity (SDHC) Flash Card Model TS16GSDHC6

Pros: -It's cheap, 16GB, class 6.

Cons: -Died after 1 hour and strangely enough I was happy: this weekend I'm driving to Crater lake (OR) and it would be horrible if it died in the middle of the long trip.

Overall Review: -I bought it together with Canon T1i thinking that the 1080p video feature requires a class 6 card. Apparently this is a wrong assumption - the HP 16GB class 4 card works perfectly in all video quality modes.

Double fan water cooler doesn't fit

Corsair Carbide Series 200R Black Steel / Plastic Compact ATX Mid Tower Case
Corsair Carbide Series 200R Black Steel / Plastic Compact ATX Mid Tower Case

Pros: Overall it's a good case. It's worth the money if you buy it on sale. Good placement of HDD/SSD bays helps organize power and SATA cables.

Cons: The case doesn't have enough room on the top of motherboard to fit double fan water cooler (mobo: ATX Asus Z87-A, cooler Corsair H100i)

Overall Review: BTW beware - you need to put the hard drives backwards and wire/connect them on the other side of the case. (I guess it's just me, but I didn't understand this first and so when I put my drives "normal way" and connected power/sata cables the connectors were sticking out a bit too much bending the side of the case. )

Quiet overclocker

MSI Radeon HD 6870 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity R6870 Twin Frozr II
MSI Radeon HD 6870 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity R6870 Twin Frozr II

Pros: 1. The card overclocks like a charm. 2. The cooler is worth extra $10. It makes the card very quiet in nongaming mode and in games (comparing to my old single fan video). 3. MSI Afterburner and Combuster are perfect for overclocking. 4. The box has all hardware and software you need.

Cons: 1. In order to get a Dirt3 game you need to send AMD a picture of your coupon - it will take time to get the game. 2. AMD Eyefinity is not good if you have 2 monitors with different resolution (1680x1050 + 1920x1080).

Overall Review: I rarely OCd my videocards because IMHO it was way too loud, hot, and unreliable. This card made me change my mind. It overclocks in 1 step (In MSI afterburner I set Core voltage: 1.26V, Core clock: 1000Mhz, Mem clock: 1200Mh), runs at very stable 77C under load.

Twice slower than the DDR3 version.

XFX Radeon HD 4670 1GB DDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Video Card HD-467X-ZDF2
XFX Radeon HD 4670 1GB DDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Video Card HD-467X-ZDF2

Pros: -Low power consumption. -Component out (customer support mailed me the S-Video->Component adapter when I asked them) -Quiet

Cons: -1GB of DDR2 memory is a marketing trick. The DDR2 memory clock is 400MHz (compare this with the1000MHz of the DDR3 version). So as a result this card is twice slower then the 4670 cards tested in the popular reviews. This makes it useless for almost any game.

Overall Review: -There are cheaper options for the HTPC card with better perf. -I wish the XFX had put just 512MB of DDR3 mem on this one. -If you buy this card make sure that the return policy allows the refunds...

Good cooler for old motherboards.

ZALMAN CNPS 7500 AlCu LED 2 Ball-Bearing CPU Cooler
ZALMAN CNPS 7500 AlCu LED 2 Ball-Bearing CPU Cooler

Pros: 1. Good cooling. 2. Quiet at low speed. 3. Has a manual speed control.

Cons: 1. Has a 3 pin connector - doesn't allow automatic speed control. 2. The provided clip didn't fit into my ASUS P5Q3. Tried to bend the clip to fit but it broke in a second. Had to make my own clip and finally (2 hour later) it was in.

Overall Review: Check the radius of about 6 cm around the center of processor - any motherboard that has elements on 2 neighboring sides of processor wouldn't fit this cooler. The clips on the 2 oppsite sides of the cooler wouldn't have space to fit.
