Most Favorable Review

Lots of protection, well laid out

CyberPower 895 10 Feet 4 Transformer Spaced 4 Non-Transformer Spaced Outlets 3600 joules Surge Protector
CyberPower 895 10 Feet 4 Transformer Spaced 4 Non-Transformer Spaced Outlets 3600 joules Surge Protector

Pros: 3600joules of protection, plus an insurancre policy which indicates that they are confident that it'll work. The layout of the outlets is well thought-out, and you can protect phone and cable as well as Ethernet.

Cons: None of these devices have protection for DSL, has to do with the frequency it runs at. Would be nice to have protection for your DSL equipement.

It works. That';s what it is supposed to do.

Baaqii A217 NEC Chip 720202 Express card ExpressCard 34mm to USB 3.0 2 Ports Adapter Card

Pros: It fits into the card slot with very little sticking out. It's almost flush with the side of the laptop. The included drivers worked flawlessly with Windows 7.

Cons: It sticks out a fraction of an inch from the side of the laptop. This has not been an issue for me but I had to put something in this box so here you go.

Overall Review: t does exactly what it's supposed to do.

Sensable and properly configured

ENERMAX EG651P-VE FM(24P) 550 W ATX12V V1.2 Power Supply
ENERMAX EG651P-VE FM(24P) 550 W ATX12V V1.2 Power Supply

Pros: I had all sorts of trouble with a split rail PSU from Antec, who is supposed to be the best. This unit is solid, has lots of power, plenty of cables, and puts all the amps into a single rail. That way your drives, CPU, video card, and other toys have a lot of power at hand. Forget split rail, this baby has the horsepower to run two dual core Opterons, 2 ATA drives, 4 SATA drives, a monster video card, and all sorts of USB and FireWire gizmos. It'll do the job.

Cons: Instruction booklet is obtuse, but if you're building your own you should be able to figure it out.

Overall Review: I learned my lesson about split rail PSU's. That is, don't use them!! This unit will do what you need and has the muscle to power all sorts of toys.

Great firewall for the price

NETGEAR FVS318 ProSafe VPN Firewall Switch
NETGEAR FVS318 ProSafe VPN Firewall Switch

Pros: VPN and an excellent firewall. It stealths all ports, including the mysterious port 1! With two of these I suspect you could split your network into two locations. Four ports saves you the cost of a hub for most small offices.

Cons: Remote connection software for "on the road" access to your network is pricey. Would that it was offered as part of the package! But you can't have everything.

Overall Review: Very good price. Very good firewall. You need two of them if you have two locations, but you need a firewall/router at each location anyway, so for the price this is a great deal!

Great Photoshop monster

MSI K8N Master2-FAR ATX Server Motherboard Dual 940 NVIDIA nForce4 Professional
MSI K8N Master2-FAR ATX Server Motherboard Dual 940 NVIDIA nForce4 Professional

Pros: This board is fitted out for basic server or workstation use. Heavy mod freaks won't like the fact that you have to use the included CPU fans, the mount is different from the standard AMD mount. It supports SATA, I've got a couple of RAID1 arrays, and the board has extra system fan connectors so you can push it pretty hard. A perfect Photoshop setup, two Opteron 270's and 8GB let Photoshop really stretch outon XP 64 bit! With a terabyte of RAID storage you can keep most of your work live and local, on secure RAID arrays. It has what you need, no frills. That's good, because if it isn't there, it won't break!!

Cons: The board can be fussy about drives; the primary slave has to be the hard drive, not an optical drive. No big deal, but a bit of a fuss to figure out. It also can hang on detecting the RAID arrays with the included driver, updating the driver and/o BIOS is no big deal but it's anoither step. The SLI card arrived set up for two video cards, if you're using only one card it can be tricky to figure out what's wrong!

Overall Review: Get ready for 64 bit computing, it's coming down the pike. This board seems to be ideal for an XP 64 bit setup, just don't expect to connect a whole lot of expansion cards. It really IS a server/workstation board. Well worth the price.

Lots of storage, but treat genty!

Maxtor DiamondMax 11 6H500F0 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive
Maxtor DiamondMax 11 6H500F0 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: This is a good, fast, quiet hard drive. I am using two as a RAID array, and they are performing just fine.

Cons: One of the drives started acting up, so I unplugged it to see if there was anything amiss. THE PINS FELL OUT! Newegg very quickly replaced the drive, but the SATA interface is not as robust as PATA, so be really careful when you install this drive. And once it's in. leave it there!!

Overall Review: I've used a number of these Maxtor SATA drives, this is the first one that has gone bad on me. It was a manufacturing defect, the plastic ridge that protects the pins had fallen off. Very unusual. But this underscores the truith that it is not a question of IF a drive will fail, it's a question of WHEN a drive will fail. Always back up your data. This was half of a RAD 1 array, all I lost was some time as the drive was replaced. But someday, everybody's going to lose data unless everyting is backed up!
