Good entry level receiver

ONKYO TX-SR307 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver
ONKYO TX-SR307 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver

Pros: Relatively inexpensive. Automatic speaker setup with Audyssey EQ. 3 HDMI inputs. 2 different pseudo-surround modes. Officially supports 6 ohm speakers.

Cons: HDMI is Pass Thru only, receiver does NOT process HDMI audio signals, merely sends them through the HDMI output to a TV or other device. Doesn't support the latest HD audio formats. HDMI output may not work with some PCs. No S-Video inputs.

Overall Review: I recently bought this receiver to replace an aging 20 year old Sony. This was for a small bedroom, so I didn't need a lot of power. I also wanted to reduce clutter. Before this I used an HDMI switcher to switch between my PC and PS3, so I needed a new receiver with HDMI inputs. I also wanted to step up to digital sound for the PS3. Given that my needs are so modest, this receiver is a good fit. However, if you're looking for a model that supports HDMI audio or the latest HD audio formats for Blu-Ray, you won't get it here. As far as sound quality goes, it's better than my old model, but that's not saying much. Sound quality is good but at the budget/entry-level you can't really expect audiophile quality. The manual says that the HDMI inputs/output do not support PCs, but it works fine with my Radeon 4850 videocard and Samsung 906BW LCD monitor. Depending on your setup you may need DVI-HDMI adapter cables.

Does what it needs to.

VANTEC NexStar NST-D300SU3 Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" SATA USB 3.0 & eSATA SuperSpeed Hard Drive Dock
VANTEC NexStar NST-D300SU3 Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" SATA USB 3.0 & eSATA SuperSpeed Hard Drive Dock

Pros: It works. Inexpensive.

Cons: Flimsy plastic construction. Obnoxiously bright blue LED.

Overall Review: This would be a great little product were it not for the blue power LED. It's way too bright. You could use it as a nightlight. The plastic construction is a little flimsy and cheap, but that might be expected in an inexpensive model such as this.

Highly overrated by the Internet.

Philips Performance SHP9500 Over-Ear Open-Air Headphones - EXCLUSIVE - Black
Philips Performance SHP9500 Over-Ear Open-Air Headphones - EXCLUSIVE - Black

Pros: Quite comfortable. Has a detachable cable. Wide soundstage. Good for music genres like jazz, folk, and any live performance recordings. Soundstage makes it good for gaming use.

Cons: Bass rolls off sharply below 70 Hz, but I knew that before purchase. Midrange is supposed to be neutral according to several graphs online, but sounds distant and recessed to me. Treble is sharp and sibilant, though not unbearable. Soundstage, although wide laterally, sounds shallow in front. Bad for music with a busy, congested mix like rock/metal. Due to recessed midrange and thin bass, bad for hip hop/rap.

Overall Review: After hearing all of the hype for these over the years, I was excited to finally get my hands on a pair. Having high expectations, after trying them for the first time, I was extremely disappointed. The much vaunted soundstage was underwhelming. Sounds on the left/right side of the head sounded good, but the soundstage in front was not much better than a pair of closed backs. Vocals are supposed to be the strong point of these phones, but they sound thin and recessed. The bass is adequate, but falls off sharply below 70 Hz or so. Due to this, they sound much more bright and sibilant then they would otherwise. My opinion of them for gaming is much better. They worked well when paired with virtual surround software. Unfortunately, there are cheaper open backed headphones out there for gaming (you know the ones I'm talking about), making it hard to recommend these at this price point.

Problematic with optical drives

Koutech PIR133 PCI IDE Controller Card
Koutech PIR133 PCI IDE Controller Card

Pros: Based on the excellent Silicon Image sil0680 chipset. Flashable BIOS. Two IDE ports.

Cons: May not allow optical drives to used as boot devices.

Overall Review: I just built a new PC, but I wanted to keep using a venerable old Plextor PX-760A. My new motherboard does not have an old PATA controller. I had an old Syba PCI controller card lying around (based on the VIA VT6421 chipset) so I tried that first. The drive could boot from media and read commercially pressed discs, but wouldn't recognize blank media. After doing some research, I learned that boards based on the SIL0680 chip have a good reputation for working with optical drives, so I bought this Koutech PIR133. This card allows the 760A to work 100% upon loading Windows 7, however I could not get the drive to function as a boot device. Beware if you are buying it for this purpose. It might work for you, it might not.

Just what I needed

Fellowes 8031101 Office Suites Monitor Riser
Fellowes 8031101 Office Suites Monitor Riser

Pros: Has a nice modern look to it. Adjustable height. Has a drawer for storing items. Inexpensive.

Cons: Although it's sturdy enough, it's made of plastic. Not much clearance for putting things underneath unless you remove the bottom drawer.

Overall Review: I had wooden monitor stand that came with my computer desk I bought years ago. Unfortunately, it wasn't adjustable and was too high for optimum viewing of my LCD monitor. I put my monitor on this one and it's just the right height at 6 inches. Without the drawer installed, it even has enough room underneath to store my Playstation 3. Fellowes makes a more expensive model that has a cup holder and CD storage, but I don't need those things so I bought this one.

Decent product

Rosewill - HDMI Switch box 3-in-1 w/ Remote (RME-002)
Rosewill - HDMI Switch box 3-in-1 w/ Remote (RME-002)

Pros: Does what it's supposed to do. Nice looking piano black finish.

Cons: The LEDs on the front panel are so bright, if you took this outside at night and put in on the ground, astronauts could probably see it from orbit! You'll have to find some way to obscure them or cover them up. The cord has a power brick on it, so make sure you have room on your surge protector.
