Godo card, too loud

EVGA 256-P2-N553-AX GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card
EVGA 256-P2-N553-AX GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card

Pros: Good company backing the card, high performance for the price

Cons: The cooling fan is very loud before Windows boots and while in the BIOS, memtest, DOS, Linux, etc. and also when 3D kicks in (even a screensaver). Once Windows boots and before 3D, the card is fairly quiet. Not suitable for very low noise of HTPC systems.

Overall Review: I bought a passive card to get rid of the noise.

Decent minitor for the price, but bad viewing angles/colors

SAMSUNG 22" a-si TFT/TN LCD WSXGA+ LCD Monitor with Height Adjustments 5 ms (GTG) 1680 x 1050 D-Sub, DVI-D 225BW
SAMSUNG 22" a-si TFT/TN LCD WSXGA+ LCD Monitor with Height Adjustments 5 ms (GTG) 1680 x 1050 D-Sub, DVI-D 225BW

Pros: HDCP support, height/tilt/swivel support, nice size without being too big, good price, pixels aren't so small you must squint. Great stand.

Cons: I hate that the colors on this monitor change fairly readily with the viewing angle. I even notice it 1.5 feet away from the monitor with my eyes basically centered on the LCD. You don't need to be way off angle for light grays/whites to begin to turn a yellowish brown, for example. Sitting close to the monitor makes things worse. if you have bad eyesight. There is some minor backlight bleed at the top/bottom, but it does not bother me that much. At all of the preset profiles except "Text" (internet, game, movie, etc.), light gray colors fade into the whites. In the Text setting the white isn't as bright. So, the monitor will definitely require some time spent calibrating to look nice. You may need to update your video card drivers to get the native resolution supported easily.

Overall Review: I'm donating this monitor to a family member and getting a 24" panel with a PVA/MVA or IPS panel, with better viewing angles. Sadly, there don't appear to be 22" screens with the more advanced panels and the 24" panels are a big jump in price. I have to sit in front of this LCD all day long, so I can't afford not to be picky. I bought this over the similar 226BW model because of the added stand adjustability. I didn't test movies and games much, since I don't really do that. I mainly need an LCD for programming, photo editing, and GUI design, so I strongly prefer accurate colors to a fast response rate, so I've decided TN panels are out of the question now. I wish companies would state realistic viewing angles before the colors noticeably change, not misleading us with when the monitor degrades to 5:1 or 10:1 contrast, when it was at a useless viewing angle long before that.

Good purchase, fast, reliable

Patriot Xporter Magnum 64GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) Model PEF64GMNUSB
Patriot Xporter Magnum 64GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) Model PEF64GMNUSB

Pros: Huge capacity, good company, nice looking, seems well-constructed, faster than most 64GB flash drives (details below). Works fine with two PCs and my PS3. Decent price for this size/speed/quality.

Cons: 1.1 inches wide is a larger than normal, but it fits fine in my desktop and Dell laptop. Activity LED is a bit dull and hard to see in normal room lighting. Like all flash drives, throughput is very slow for lots of small files (< ~64K), but much faster for larger files (see below). The cap snaps in a bit loose on the back of the the drive. This deserves 4.5 eggs, if I could do that.

Overall Review: Pre-formatted FAT32 (good for device compatibility, unless you need larger than 4GB files) HD Tach 3.0.4.0 short speed test under Vista with USB2: Random Access: 0.7 ms (variable) CPU Utilization: ~8% (variable) Average Read: 32.8 MB/sec (consistent) Atto 2.34 speed test under Vista: Size | Read | Write (in MB/sec) 4K | 06.76 | 00.57 32K | 24.61 | 07.34 256K | 32.04 | 22.67 4 MB | 32.00 | 23.10 The Atto transfer speeds are a bit slower on my laptop: Max write 16 MB/sec, max read 26 MB/sec., so your other hardware can make a difference. The max write is a lot faster than my old 16GB flash voyager, bit the max read speed is a tiny bit slower. Real world single large file copy speed from HD to flash: 1.86 GB in 122 seconds (15.6 MB/sec) 997 MB in 63 sec (15.8 MB/sec) The main casing is a light metal and the casing endcaps and the main USB plug cap are plastic.

Smooth install, no problems

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X2048-6400C4
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X2048-6400C4

Pros: Smooth install (the strictly-memory part anyway), some performance boost

Cons: Nothing comes to mind

Overall Review: I started with a 2 GB machine, and added 2 GB more, since the price of this kit has dropped so much now. For my Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard, I had to fiddle a little with the BIOS to get all 4 GB recognized, but after that Vista recognized all of the memory fine (My Computer properties report "4095 MB" now). I am able to run more apps and virtual machines now. File searches across many files use the disk cache more often. Note that this Asus motherboard seems to reduce the memory speed slightly when you run 4 GB dual channel. It ignores the SPID and the auto setting uses these settings: 5-5-5-18 2T. It is plenty fast for me, so I've not investigated this further. Memory remap is activated from BIOS, Advanced, Chipset, Northbridge Chipset Configuration under "Memory remapping" and turn it on

Promise Unfulfilled

HP Officejet Pro L7780 C8192A Up to 35 ppm Black Print Speed 4800 x 1200 dpi Color Print Quality Ethernet (RJ-45) / USB / Wi-Fi InkJet MFC / All-In-One Color Printer
HP Officejet Pro L7780 C8192A Up to 35 ppm Black Print Speed 4800 x 1200 dpi Color Print Quality Ethernet (RJ-45) / USB / Wi-Fi InkJet MFC / All-In-One Color Printer

Pros: Nice looking, huge number of features, good hardware fit and finish, print quality and speed were good when it worked, 2 paper trays, legal paper support, duplex printing (not tested), USB port and flash cards worked great, color screen for menus/preview, fax capability, document feeder, some support people were helpful, HP accepted my return request.

Cons: Wireless was unreliable, even with 4/5 on signal strength and all of the other more distant PCs working wirelessly fine, even wired networking was unreliable and reset often, HP drivers and software are famous for being unstable and problematic, and this printer didn't disappoint in that respect with slow, klunky, non-integrated software causing login crashes on one PC. Install deposits hundreds of megabytes of DLL hell, startup programs/services, taskbar icons, start menu groups, etc. Support comes from a foreign country, and sometimes makes communication hard. I spent many hours and calls with them, to no avail. Every call they made me reset the settings to the defaults again and run through their scripted requests.

Overall Review: This was for a small office install. The printer fit their feature needs, but made me look stupid when it failed in every imaginable way. I eventually bought them another brand of printer with fewer features for about $200, and it worked with almost no effort. Maybe since I ordered it the first day of availability, it was a bad batch, but this is the second time I've recently tried HP's consumer and lower-end business all in ones, and and the software and attention to detail is just awful!

SanDisk 2GB Memory Stick Pro Duo (MS Pro Duo) Flash Card Model SDMSPD-2048-A11
SanDisk 2GB Memory Stick Pro Duo (MS Pro Duo) Flash Card Model SDMSPD-2048-A11

Pros: Works fine in a Sony T10 camera and the included Memory Stick adapter works fine to adapt this smaller size to the larger Atech Flash Xm-4U MS slot on my PC. I can store so many photos on this it makes me almost lazy to ever move them to my PC.

Cons: None
