Great board, still needs work

MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard
MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Very good looking board, attractive features (I haven't explored the usefulness of the knobs or buttons, save the CMOS Reset :p), strong performer for overclocking the CPU. Best AM3 board yet, onboard LAN chipset was the deciding factor for me between this and the only other board with the features I wanted. I'm trying to avoid having to clutter up my case with a network card by using a chipset I haven't known to fail.

Cons: DIMM slots very close to CPU socket, meaning larger coolers (I'm using a Noctua NH-U12P) can't be used in conjunction with memory modules with large heat spreaders (Dominator and the like) in at least slot 1, maybe 2. Luckily using only slots 3 and 4 is not an issue (slots 1 & 2 are channel 0, slots 3 & 4 are channel 1). Front USB connector is on the bottom left of the board, my cable wouldn't reach in a full tower. My RAM will not run at its rated 1600mHz, period. Even some RAM which is on the list of supported DIMMs doesn't run at the correct speed. Hopefully a BIOS update will correct that (using 1.1 currently). RAM speed options are limited to a selection of the four standard speeds, no slight OC's allowed without tinkering with the FSB.

Overall Review: Couldn't unlock the fourth core of my 720BE, sadly. I got one whose core actually was damaged. Not too upset though, performance is still amazing. I'll probably never use all the SATA ports. Newegg shipping was fast as usual, much appreciated in a time of need. A power failure as my old system had just begun booting spelled the end for it. A UPS would probably be a smart investment.

AMD Phenom II X3 720 - Phenom II X3 Triple-Core 2.8 GHz Socket AM3 95W Black Processor - HDZ720WFGIBOX
AMD Phenom II X3 720 - Phenom II X3 Triple-Core 2.8 GHz Socket AM3 95W Black Processor - HDZ720WFGIBOX

Pros: This build is comprehensively more responsive than a friend's Q6600, though that's far from a scientific comparison. It's also a very nice upgrade from an Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Toledo. Highly efficient, handles moderate overclocks with almost no increase in temperatures at idle or under load. I haven't pushed this processor very hard because I have no need currently, working out bugs in the rest of the system. This is one component I don't have to worry about. More cache per core than its quad core brethren (view other thoughts if you can't figure that one out).

Cons: Small heatsink, I didn't even take it out of the box until my machine was up and running.

Overall Review: Couldn't unlock the fourth core, but that's really not a problem. I probably wouldn't have used it anyway.

Happy Customer

Western Digital WD Green WD10EADS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital WD Green WD10EADS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Quiet as far as I can tell (system is far from silent though), I've forgotten it was there. Huge amount of storage space. Reliable for a little over two months and still running strong. Very good price. Runs cool. Good amount of cache. Low power consumption. Excellent storage/backup drive from what I've observed.

Cons: None to speak of, except maybe that it influenced my Raptor to stop talking to me.

Overall Review: I'll post another review if this drive gives out on me after extended use, but thus far it's doing all I can ask of it. I think it'll be fine.

Quite Satisfied

Noctua NH-U12P 120mm SSO CPU Cooler
Noctua NH-U12P 120mm SSO CPU Cooler

Pros: Large and heavy. Very solid construction, including mounting hardware. Also includes a small tube of Noctua's premium thermal paste, though I didn't use it. Good at soaking up the heat prior to its being blown out the back of the case. Keeps my 720BE at 22/24 degrees Celsius at idle/under load when the ambient temperature is low enough. Too bad I don't like being quite that cool.

Cons: Large and heavy. Had to take both side fans off my case to accommodate it. Baaarely fits. Not really a con because this cooler makes up for the job those two fans were assisting with in the first place. Maybe even count it as a pro if you dislike high RPM 80mm fans. Closed-end fans will have to be modified (into at least semi-open-end fans) if you want to use them with the provided attachment clips. Had no problem taking a hacksaw to my cheap aftermarket fan though, and it worked out fine. Just took some time.

Overall Review: Replaced the stock fan with a Yate Loon D12SH-12. I had no problem installing the fan before sticking it in the case. The attachment method is a bit odd, but it works. Might buy another fan to use in push-pull configuration.

Performance:price can't be beaten

CORSAIR XMS3 DHX 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TW3X4G1600C9DHX
CORSAIR XMS3 DHX 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TW3X4G1600C9DHX

Pros: Best performance to price ratio. And they are fast. As reliable as they're allowed to be. What more can be said?

Cons: Heat spreaders are quite tall, not really a problem for me though. May not fit if your CPU heatsink is large and/or close to the DIMM slots you intend to use. Can't pass Memtest at 1600mHz using any combination of timings, voltages, and settings on an MSI 790FX-GD70. Some may have had success, others and myself have not. Not the fault of the RAM though, so I won't be crushing any eggs in this review.

Overall Review: Running stable at 1333mHz on (motherboard's) stock voltage of 1.6 is fine for now. Looking forward to using these to a fuller potential with the next motherboard BIOS update... hopefully. Wish MB and RAM manufacturers would step on these silly board/memory incompatibilities. I got lucky-ish.

BenQ 22" WSXGA+ LCD Monitor 5 ms D-Sub, DVI, HDMI FP222WH
BenQ 22" WSXGA+ LCD Monitor 5 ms D-Sub, DVI, HDMI FP222WH

Pros: First of all, this is a huge monitor. The picture's sharp, bright, and has great contrast. It doesn't get any better for this price. You can imagine how pleased I am, upgrading from a 13" CRT.

Cons: There is some backlight bleed, but that's to be expected. You won't notice anything unless the screen is completely black, so there's no loss there.

Overall Review: My current video card is quite outdated, so there were some initial problems getting this thing to work, but anything newer than dirt should be good to go.
