SAMSUNG Story Station 2TB USB 2.0 3.5" External Hard Drive HX-DU020EB
SAMSUNG Story Station 2TB USB 2.0 3.5" External Hard Drive HX-DU020EB

Pros: Solid, quiet, cool, built like a tank that is very good preventing vibration and noise. 3 year warranty should tell you something about Samsung's confidence in their product. (I may be biased, because all my monitors, my DVD drives, and my disk drives are Samsung, but I'm still not afraid that I'll be jinxed.) The average transfer speed for USB 2 drives is between 22 and 25 MB. This drive has 23.7 MB average transfer rate (21.9MB low - 26.5MB high), and 15ms access time. (Synthetic benchmarks using HD Tune.)

Cons: This USB drive has a mini USB connector. I wish it would have both type of USB sockets. My other external USB drives have the larger USB connectors and now I have to swap the cables when switching between the drives. I also wish that it would be stackable.

Overall Review: I wish we users would provide more useful reviews. After six reviewers I still just took a leap of faith but had no hard information to base my purchase. It was reported that it had to be reformatted. To what format? FAT, NTFS, some kind of Apple or Unix format? (It took me less then 30sec to reformat this 2TB drive to Windows NTFS. Not too shabby!) I already addressed the claim being slow: it's right smack in the middle of the optimum USB 2 range! Want faster? Buy the eSATA (Story Station Plus) model. Can't copy "machine images"? FAT32 has a maximum file size of 4GB. Images larger than that? Never seen one! I have 2 hour DVD movies that are under 4GB!

Better than nothing

Thermaltake A2358 Dr. Power Tester
Thermaltake A2358 Dr. Power Tester

Pros: If you just need a reality check this tester can detect a badly failed P.S. But don't try to use it for anything else! In retrospect I should have purchased one of the slightly more expensive models. One that has digital displays.

Cons: Connectors are very hard to work with. I can't connect the SATA and the 4pin Molex connectors at the same time.

Overall Review: Oh well, live and learn.

In all fairness

WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
WD Green WD30EZRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I don't have this specific 3TB drive but I have 2 WD20 EZRX and 2 1TB versions of these Green drives. The oldest 1TB are over 5 years old and still running fine, and the newer 2 years old WD20s are also running without any issues. I never writes reviews and this is only a comment that you can't trust evaluation written by disgruntled customers. Every make of hard drive can have a lemon, but in my experience WD drives and in particular these variable speed Green drives are very good quality. When reading complaints by people with "high tech knowledge" reporting slow speeds you should keep in mind that ANY modern drive have higher physical transfer rates than USB 3 and even SATA III protocols. The bottle neck is always the hard drive connection protocols and not the drive itself. Only some high performance SSD drives (my Samsung 830 Pro 256GB comes close) have high enough electrical specs to fully utilize the SATA 6GB or USB 3 5GB max. transfer speeds.

Cons: I don't know of any cons.

Pros: None yet.

Cons: None yet.

Overall Review: Just a comment about rockfarmer's review. Need "at least a19" depth with no vertical ledges or other obstructions between the Sata 6 connectors and the 3.5" bays"? The board is only 9.6" wide! You recommend almost 10 inch clearance to insert SATA cables!? My whole case is is (only) 19" deep! I don't have the board yet and browsing here only to educate myself about potential issues. But how much useful information can I get from the reviews here?

Best in its class

SAMSUNG STORY Station 2TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive HX-DU020EB/A62 w/ European Power Cord - Free US Adapter
SAMSUNG STORY Station 2TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive HX-DU020EB/A62 w/ European Power Cord - Free US Adapter

Pros: Quiet, cool, fast 27MB average (29.2MB max.) transfer rate. True Green Drive, power is disconnected when removed from PC (media player, etc.) a big plus for me.

Cons: You may prefer a direct connect power adapter to a power strip. This one has a cord for for the AC connection as well as for the drive voltage supply. I'm happy with this arrangement.

Overall Review: I'm using two of these (2TB) units now and have nothing but praise for them.

Useless

CyberLink PowerDirector 8 Ultra
CyberLink PowerDirector 8 Ultra

Pros: Easy interface for beginners. Plenty of options, but like most other video editors mostly useless glitter. The necessary features can be found, but hidden from the users. Everything must be accessed with custom icons. Doesn't even have a menu bar to basic functions.

Cons: Crashes, and crashes, and crashes.... That is one thing it does well. I have downloaded the application before buying it and the only good thing I can say about it that it didn't cost me money. When you want to get read of it, it doesn't even have an uninstaller! You must manually blast every piece of it yourself.

Overall Review: I am using Cyberlink's PowerDVD viewer for years Never had any problems with it and defended it against users who put it down! As far as this PowerDirector application goes I felt I must make my experience with it known. Feel free to buy whatever you want, but don't say you weren't warned! There is not a zero so I had to give it one egg. Way too high!
