Best Value on the Market Today
Pros: The 7950gt will be the sweet spot for price/value at least until the 2nd generation DX10 cards come out in late 2007. I upgraded to this card from a 7600gt (another great card) and was more than impressed with the higher frame rates this card produced. With no overclock this card scored 8155 on 3dmark05, and 5094 on 3dmark06. Half Life Lost Coast Demo clocked in at 83fps and Counter Strike Source at 137fps. Most important to me, it runs BF2142 at 1280x1024 on all high settings without dropping below 50 fps.
Cons: Possible that you will need the 512mb version of this card if you run at resolutions of 1600x1200 and above.
Overall Review: A great card for overclocking. I easily increase the speed to 620 core and 800 memory. This card runs fine on my Dell E510 that has a power supply rating of only 305w. The stock fan is about average for noise but I replaced it with a Zalman vf900 and now it is super quiet and runs at 55c under load instead of 75c with the stock fan (which is still an ok temperature). Replacing the fan was much easier than I anticipated and only took 20 minutes. It is possible that decent mid-range DirectX10 cards will come out later this year but it hasn't happened yet. Don't get an 8600gt or gts and expect them to outperform this card, all the industry reviews have shown otherwise. Besides, in most game journalist opinions, for at least a year you will be better off running dx9 at all high settings (which you can do with this card) rather than Dx10 at low to mid settings (like the 8600gt and gts). Finally, be sure to download the latest drivers from Nvidia or BFG and enjoy this speedy card!
Expensive, but worth it!
Pros: Using this to keep the wife off my back. I have a 7.1 Onkyo surround sound system so I had to have a headset that could come reasonably close to replicating the sound. I was pleasantly surprised at the results. I have found myself playing Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed II and forgot I was using headphones. That is the best compliment I can give a set of headphones. Great positional audio and I always know where sounds are coming from. I actually hear some background sounds more clearly than with my speakers such as footsteps or the light chime that indicates a feather is close by in Assassin's Creed. Summary: -Very comfortable -Great 7.1 sound replication -Using audio splitters or switcher lets you listen to surround sound on your cable box and PS3 as well. -Save your marriage - that could be a con for some:) -No cords!
Cons: -A rather large investment. -Occasionally get a quick pop or static. Only happens about once every half hour. My wireless router is about 20 feet away from the receiver. Some have reported more problems with a nearby wireless router but this is not a problem for me.
Overall Review: Do yourself a favor and buy some low self discharge (search for it) rechargeable batteries. These headphones will get a lot of use and you will probably be replacing batteries once a week if you game for two or three hours every day.
Pros: This fan replaced the stock fan on my 7950gt. Even when the fan is turned on high, it is substantially quieter than the stock. The Zalman is much more effective at cooling. I went from 64c idle/75c load to 43c idle/54c load. A huge temp reduction and less noise! No need to turn the fan control down from max, it is already quiet enough. Installation was easy and took no more than 20 minutes.
Cons: Might need to order a 4pin to 3 pin fan adapter (check your power supply, whatever extra connection you need is easily found on new egg) because the Zalman would not connect to the 7950gt fan connection.
Overall Review: As other reviewers have mentioned, use Arctic Silver 5 instead of the cheap thermal compound included with fan.
