Insane performance!

OCZ Vertex Series 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) OCZSSD2-1VTX60G
OCZ Vertex Series 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) OCZSSD2-1VTX60G

Pros: Insane, blistering performance e.g. Photoshop loads in LESS than 5 SECONDS!!! LOL! Silent. Low power consumption. Runs cool to the touch.

Cons: At this point, $'s per MB! Not really a "Con," but it's a bare drive, so pick up a 2.5" - 3.5" adapter and SATA Data/Power Combo Cable to install it in your case.

Overall Review: As others have said, this is bleeding-edge technology right now, definitely NOT Plug 'n' Play! I spent weeks on the OCZ Forum checking this out, educating myself on the technology, before I took the plunge. Because of the limitations of the technology itself - these drives wear out as soon as you start using them, like an old fashioned 12" LP or a tape - these are ideally used as an OS + Apps drive, data should be kept on a traditional HD. As of now, there are two basic firmwares, v1.4 & v1.41; my drive shipped with v1.4 which is optimized for Win7, XP will require a firmware flash to v1.41 and "Drive Alignment" before the Windows install. The OCZ Forum is your friend; there are detailed step-by-step guides to setting these drives up in almost any configuration, including RAID. To get the most out of your drive be prepared to tweak your system, including the OS & Registry; see the OCZ Forum for detailed instructions... and be prepared to be blown away!

Fast & Quiet...

GEAR HEAD 24x DVD Burner 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R Black SATA Model 24XDVDINT

Pros: Smooth, fast, and quiet, burns CD's and DVD's, what more could you want? :)

Cons: None that I can think of, except price of course if you're on a tight budget.

Overall Review: This is the first time I've spent more than $20 on an optical drive, but I'm certainly glad I did! Previously I would just buy el-cheapo OEM units, and would put up with the slow, noisy loading, vibration during use etc. I've modded my system to be as quiet as possible, and those old grungy units were starting to bug me. I bought these locally on a whim - sorry egg!!! - but I'm really glad that I did. The belt driven drawer action is smooth, the spin-up silent, and the loading from, or burning to, CD's or DVD's, is fast, thanks to the SATA interface. There's barely any vibration from the unit, even when burning at max speed, something I never did with my old ones. It doesn't say anywhere in the description or on the box, but the Gear peeps throw in a 19" flat, red, non-locking SATA cable, as well as the Nero, with the unit.

Silence is golden!

Seasonic SS-560KM Active PFC F3, 560W ATX12V V2.3/EPS 12V V2.91, 80Plus Gold Certified, Modular Power Supply - Retail
Seasonic SS-560KM Active PFC F3, 560W ATX12V V2.3/EPS 12V V2.91, 80Plus Gold Certified, Modular Power Supply - Retail

Pros: 100% modular design, solid, built like a battleship, silent at low power, the loudest things in my case now are the "silent" fans I installed! Good selection of peripheral cables, SATA, molex, molex to 2x fan splitter, plus 2x 6+2 PCIE cables. Insane packaging/presentation; I'm sure we've all heard about the velvet baggie for the unit itself! Solid, did I mention it's built like a battleship?! LOL!

Cons: Slightly longer than other PSU's; I put it into a full sized tower so it's not an problem for me, but I'd think it'd be a real issue in the smaller cases, possibly even in a mid depending on how packed it was. Cables are braided and stiff. I have two burners in my system and had to move the top one down a bay so I'd have space to route/bend the board, and CPU, connector cables. Not "really" a con, just something to be aware of, certainly not worthing losing an egg over.

Overall Review: If like me you test PSU's by shorting them with a paperclip before you install them, especially into an existing system, you'd be in for a very rude surprise with this unit. I did just that and was looking at a beautifully packaged, but dead PSU; the fan stuttered once or twice and that was it. So the unit was DOA, right? Well, not really! As I was packing it away I saw the "Hybrid Cooling" blurb on the box, and remembered that the fan is only supposed to come on when the unit is under 20% load. Well, the unit wasn't under any load at all (I'm sure you can see where this is going), so I plugged it into my mobo, switched on, and my system started to boot just as it should! :-) I'm not a huge fan of LED's, but I think this is one instance where a Power On Indicator Light would be useful!

Killer Case

APEVIA MX-Pider MX-PIDER-NW-BK/500 Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case ATX 500W Power Supply

Pros: I was upgrading my existing system but was tired of poking around inside a mid sized tower so decided on a complete re-build. This case is huge :) and solidly built, with plenty of room for my dual optical drives and multiple HD's; the removable, locking 3.5" cages, including one that can take a fan, as well as the rail/bracket system for the 5.25" drives, are great! As well as the 2x 120mm fans that come as standard, (rear &side), I added 2x 80mm at the front, and when I turn the system on all I hear is a gentle "whooshing" as the fans do their job... I would definitely say this is a quiet case! The case has very clean lines, a nice, understated contemporary look... I'm not keen on side panel windows and "flashy" design. Did I say this is solidly built? :) It weighs about 34lbs out of the box, has a nice finish; everything about this case says "quality," throw in a 500w supply with plenty of connection options for the price and it's a winner!

Cons: Nothing major, perhaps a longer power connection, plus an internal fan guard, on the side panel fan would be more user friendly.

Overall Review: A third 120mm fan on the top of the case would be - sorry - cool! :)
