Stable, overclocking monster

ASUS RAMPAGE FORMULA LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard
ASUS RAMPAGE FORMULA LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: This is the greatest DDR2 motherboard out there. I've owned it for 2 months and I am still in love with it. The BIOS settings allow you to change anything, even tRD for memory (which can give you great bandwidth gains.) It overclocks wonderfully (thanks in part to the Intel X48 chipset.) CPU and RAM booted right up first boot, no problems. It's amazingly stable; in fact it's the most stable motherboard I've ever owned. I love this motherboard. Works with my ATI 4870 wonderfully.

Cons: NB gets extremely hot. I'm overclocked to 450 FSB, and with the minimum NB voltage to keep my rig stable (1.54v) it idles around 60C. This is not uncommon. That's really the only con I can think of.

Overall Review: If you're using a 45nm CPU, disable Loadline Calibration until you update to BIOS 0406 (it's not listed on their website, just google it.) This BIOS fixes LLC for 45nm CPUs; otherwise you will get crashes and possibly fry the CPU. NB gets hot as hell. Remove the heatsinks, remove the junk thermal pads and apply new compound (though rumor has it this voids your warranty. But you won't need the warranty because this motherboard is like a rock.) Attach the LCD poster BEFORE you put the motherboard into your computer. It's in a very hard-to-reach spot once it's in your case. I run a Q9450 quad core, 8 GB DDR2-1000, ATI HD 4870, WD Velociraptor. Everything works like a dream. I hope this review helped you. You won't be disappointed.

Broke my raptor connector

Eagle INEO I-NIA302U Aluminum 3.5" Black USB 2.0 External Enclosure
Eagle INEO I-NIA302U Aluminum 3.5" Black USB 2.0 External Enclosure

Pros: I know it works on IDE drives...

Cons: I attached a faulty SATA Raptor drive to diagnose and fix it. (My computer was unable to detect or start the drive, guess it was really fubared.) When I went to remove the raptor, the SATA connector on the raptor came OUT with the included SATA cable - the little plastic piece on the bottom of the metal connectors is lost to me. Now I'll never fix this thing. The included SATA cable is too tight of a fit. Also, the IDE cable is extremely hard to remove from the circuit board - I bent some pins in the process (though I was able to straighten them out without much difficulty.)

Overall Review: Be CAREFUL when you remove the cables. Perhaps use your own cable - the cheap supplied one may not be up to par.

Good monitor

ASUS MK241H Black 24" 2ms HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor with 1.3M Pixel Webcam 450 cd/m2 1000:1 (ASCR 3000:1) Built in Speakers
ASUS MK241H Black 24" 2ms HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor with 1.3M Pixel Webcam 450 cd/m2 1000:1 (ASCR 3000:1) Built in Speakers

Pros: I bought this monitor from Newegg several months ago and I still have yet to have any problems with it. Bright, sharp display; low response time and no input lag; 1920x1200 16:10 display; easy to change speaker volume. Webcam works fine & effortlessly for me in xp 64, don't know what everybody else's problem is. No dead pixels.

Cons: No real cons. The speakers are standard monitor speakers, so don't expect Bose sound.

Overall Review: Great purchase, especially for gamers.

Works like a...floppy drive

SAMSUNG Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive Model SFD321B/LFBL1
SAMSUNG Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive Model SFD321B/LFBL1

Pros: Well, what can I say. It's a floppy drive. It works fine. It's black, looks good in my Armor+ case. It gets the job done... e.g. loading SATA drivers for old copies of Windows XP. What else you gonna do with a floppy drive?

Cons: No cons.

Jaw-dropping

HIS Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card H487F512P
HIS Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Graphics Card H487F512P

Pros: This card is amazing for the price. You simply can't beat this. The GTX280 delivers barely better performance for over x2 the price. NVIDIA has gotten ridiculous and greedier than ever. This thing smokes my old 512MB 8800GTS any day of the week. Tears up 3dmark. I run Age of Conan at full settings, x8 AA and it's so smooth you'd think it was a cinematic. Amazing. 300 dollars!

Cons: I've had a few crashes so far in Half-Life 2 and Age of Conan. I believe this is due to the fact that there are no drivers out for it yet (just a hotfix, i.e. beta drivers.) Also, the card runs very hot out of the box, as you well know from reading other reviews. Below is my easy solution to it.

Overall Review: There is a mail-in rebate for this card. If you bought it before July 1st (as I did), try contacting NewEgg and they may help you out. As far as the overheating, simply go into Catalyst Control Center, enable Overdrive (click the unlabelled icon... took me a second to figure that out), then navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE and edit the source of the .xml file with your profile name. Change FanSpeedAlgorithm to "Manual", and FanSpeedPercentTarget_0 to desired fan speed (35% for me is 49C idle, down from 80+). Save, activate profile. Good to go.

Good fan, though loud

Thermaltake A2018 Blue LED Case Cooling Fan
Thermaltake A2018 Blue LED Case Cooling Fan

Pros: This fan moves a lot of air. A whole lot. It's got a 3-pin connector so you can tinker with fan speeds. It also comes with a fan speed adjustment thing, if you care to use it (I'm using software to change my fan speed.) Nice light blue glow.

Cons: Full speed is loud. Very loud. Like, hear it from halfway across the house loud. I recommend reducing the fan speed either through the included knob thing, or using BIOS settings or software.

Overall Review: Currently have this attached to my Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme on my quad-core Q9450. After reducing fan speed down to 60% of max, the temperatures on my CPU only rose 3-5 degrees under 100% load, and it's MUCH quieter than full speed. Also, keep in mind that this fan glows a light blue, so if you've got some deeper blues or purple lights in your case then you may want to find a darker color LED fan.
