Horrible Firmware

Western Digital WD TV Mini Media Player Model WDBAAL0000NBK-NESN
Western Digital WD TV Mini Media Player Model WDBAAL0000NBK-NESN

Pros: Hardware seems to be OK.

Cons: Incredibly bad firmware. If you don't have a big screen TV, you'll need binoculars to read the tiny fonts used for file names. Unit doesn't recognize Rosewill SDHC readers. Search function operates on entire drive instead of the subdirectory you're in. You can't terminate a search without unplugging the power. Search crashes after about 10 minutes on 500 gig drives. No searching for directories, only files. Directories are alphabetized only by the first two characters, after that it's random, causing you to scroll through a huge number of essentially unordered directories (only partially displayed) to find the one you want. Search function can not be made case insensitive. Playlists only work on the subdirectory level they're written in and then they pay the files in alphabetical order only. This firmware should never have made it through testing. I don't believe that it was tested by anyone using it for playing large drives of MP3 files.

Overall Review: Nearly useless for any drive with more than a gew gigs of MP3 files.

Still useless

Rosewill RNX-N250UBE - Wireless N300 Wi-Fi Adapter - IEEE 802.11b/11g/11n, (2T2R), Up to 300 Mbps Data Rates, USB 2.0 Interface, Two 5 dBi High Power Detachable Antenna
Rosewill RNX-N250UBE - Wireless N300 Wi-Fi Adapter - IEEE 802.11b/11g/11n, (2T2R), Up to 300 Mbps Data Rates, USB 2.0 Interface, Two 5 dBi High Power Detachable Antenna

Pros: Still absolutely none.

Cons: Rosewill sent a replacement for the apparent dud I received and the replacement is only about 1 dB more sensitive. It still runs about 10 dB below the built-in wi-fi in my HP laptop. Best signal in my bedroom is -65 dB, which is unusable for streaming 24/96 or higher rez audio. Even Rosewill's RNX-MiniN1, the size of a fingernail, with no apparent antenna, can match its performance.

Overall Review: I think I've had it with Rosewill products. Quality has been in a nosedive for the last year or so. Their customer service actually told me that the two 5 dB antennas on the unit aren't meant to increase the gain. What?????

Completely Useless

Rosewill RNX-N250UBE - Wireless N300 Wi-Fi Adapter - IEEE 802.11b/11g/11n, (2T2R), Up to 300 Mbps Data Rates, USB 2.0 Interface, Two 5 dBi High Power Detachable Antenna
Rosewill RNX-N250UBE - Wireless N300 Wi-Fi Adapter - IEEE 802.11b/11g/11n, (2T2R), Up to 300 Mbps Data Rates, USB 2.0 Interface, Two 5 dBi High Power Detachable Antenna

Pros: None

Cons: It's 14 dB less sensitive than the internal antenna on my HP laptop. I'm trying to stream 24/96 FLAC files to my back bedroom and I get nothing but dropouts on the audio. InSSider tells me that my signal level averages -70, while I get -54 with the built-in. I was hoping for -45 or -50.

Overall Review: Apparently a dud. Other users would never give more than one star if they were all like this one. I'm starting to lose faith in the Rosewill brand.

Died in 30 hrs

LG N1A1NF1 2TB Network Storage
LG N1A1NF1 2TB Network Storage

Pros: Relatively cheap.

Cons: After uploading 450 gigs of files into it, it lost all network connectivity and beeped a lot. Tried re-installation but the install software was unable to see it on the network any longer. LED's around the jack still flash, so it's seeing the router but the router does NOT see it. I'm not real happy about sending it back with 450 gigs of my files on it. The USB access to the drive does not have access to anything uploaded on the network. In fact, the USB access is a joke and can only write to 400 Gb on a 2 Tb drive. Anything written on the USB port is invisible to the net port.

Overall Review: Don't buy this one. There are others in the same price range with better reputations.

Freezes completely

WD TV Live Media Player WDBHG70000NBK-HESN
WD TV Live Media Player WDBHG70000NBK-HESN

Pros: The usual.

Cons: Attaching a 750G HD with several thousand MP3 files causes the entire system to lock up after a few minutes. Nothing works. You have to unplug and start over. Seems to have a limit on the number of MP3's it can index but no one at WD knows anything about it. Did this with two different WD HD's.

Overall Review: Goes back tomorrow. I'll try one more to see if this is a dud. Shipped with NO USER MANUAL.

Truly awful junk

Cirago HD Media Player CTM1000 USB 2.0/HDMI Interface
Cirago HD Media Player CTM1000 USB 2.0/HDMI Interface

Pros: None I can think of.

Cons: In file mode it says that 98% of the folders on my music library HD are empty. When you use it in 'Music' mode it sorts out every track 1 on your source, then every track 2. The only other sort option is by date. Even in this mode it can't see anything in the folders that it's decided are empty. In file mode I can make it see mp3 files on an SD card but you have to manually advance from one track to the next after it finishes playing. In Photo mode after a few dozen previews show on the screen the synch breaks up the video, a very loud 'crack' is heard the the speakers and the unit reboots. Does this every time. Tried to reload the firmware from an SD but only got a read error just after it started. Then I tried to reload firmware from an HD. This time it wouldn't even start to load the file. I bought this for audio and haven't bothered to feed it a video file. Bet if I did it would screw that up too. IF you can get an MP3 file to play, the sound is pretty good.

Overall Review: This is possibly the most defective electronic device I have bought in my life. I'm only giving it 1 egg because there's no option for 0 eggs.
