Yes the RAM can be upgraded, but it's already good enough. If you really want to give it a performance boost, get a SSD for it. I think you can buy this exact model but with an SSD instead of an HHD.

FIX THE DESCRIPTION - STILL SAYS "FULL HD" and "1920x1080" WHY????? ASUS support agreed with one complaint that this model is lower resolution. I almost bought this with the same expectation!

How fast does the USB3.1 port actually run - for instance, when zeroing a connected hard drive that can write at 150MB/s?

In theory, the max throughput on a USB 3.1 connection is somewhere around 625 MB/s (Gen 1), so yes it is possible for it to write at the full 150MB/s that a hard drive is capable of.  But keep in mind, that with a mechanical hard drive the write speed will vary depending on where the read/write head is in relation to the platter(s).  On a SATA SSD Drive, it's very possible that it could max out that transfer rate, but it would ultimately be limited by the speed of the processor/bus/memory/internal hard drive/or other storage medium being used for the transfer.

Can the hhd be removed and replaced?

Yes it can, however, replacing drives can be very difficult so I would recommend going for this exact model but with an SSD already installed, you can find this option on Newegg.
