Pros: i7 is beyond what is needed for everyday usage --- but there are always websites that are poorly written or bloated with graphics and at those times the CPU's extra processing power eliminates any delays. 8gb of memory is the perfect size for Windows 10, more than enough for Office, Chrome browsing with multiple tabs, and background tasks like pandora/netflix/youtube on a secondary screen. The SSD is the perfect storage size for long-term usage without having to worry about space anxiety. SSD speed is faster and more reliable than any spinning drive - worry free. The Geforce software seamlessly switches graphics processing from the i7 to the 940MX without any hiccups. I do not see any extra battery drain when the Geforce is not used. Exhaust cooling going to the screen hinge is a neat aesthetic design while also keeping my hands from getting warm like on side exhaust laptops. A simple thing like the touch pad is just designed better by Asus than most other brands - size, integrated buttons, Windows functionality. USB 3.0 ports are true to standard speeds. Plastic appearance is a as nice as you can get for plastic. The plastic casing is also solid - with the laptop open, I hold it by the corner and there is no flexing in the case despite being 15in screen and some heft. Screen is clear and matte making it less strain on my poor eyes (14hrs/day!). Audio quality to Bose headphones is very clear and adjustable. Keyboard finish and feel are better than most laptops but not as good as the +$1500 systems.
Cons: Cooling fan for cpu is noticeable more audible than comparable Dell models. A keyboard backlight would have been nice. The SDHC slot has gone the way of other manufactures - sd cards only go in half way which I believe is to keep cost down/reliability up since there is no need for an eject mechanism. I liked to keep an SD card inserted always as a constant option for backup and/or scratch disk for encoding to save the system drive from wear and tear. I also use headphones most of the day with an external mouse - it would have been nice to have the headphone jack on the left side with the other I/O ports but this is more of a preference than con. Speaker is quality adequate to good but I prefer the speakers to project from the keyboard than the front. My previous Asus laptop had that design. Speakers in the front sound great on hard surfaces but once on a bed/couch or empty space, the sound suffers dramatically while speakers in the keyboard keep sound the same.
Overall Review: I sit in front of my laptop for about 9-14hrs 6 days a week. Majority of that time is spent reading text books and using study websites. Other times I use Netflix and x265 videos. The 512gb drive is worth the price difference over the lower model. The graphics chip is a huge plus for casual gamers over the 7500u integrated GPU but is not a top tier gaming chip. The SSD drive is fast and does everything I ask of it from copying large files quickly to reading multiple small files demand but it is not as fast as top tier Samsung SSD drives. I have not used the USB C port yet but its a nice addition as this is way everything is going. The system has only 2 USB 3 ports but they are able to power everything without issue. Every Dell that has not been the professional line, has had trouble delivering reliable power to all the ports making them useless in most instances. WiFi 5g is fast but distance is limited. WiFi 2.4g is more than plenty for web browsing/streaming HD content. I have transferred up to 10gb files to my NAS and speeds stay around 50mbs. I cannot give a fair assessement on signal strength as I have a very good router that provides coverage beyond my property lines (RT-AC68). Webcam video quality is adequate for typically work, no complaints with webcam audio quality. Cortana is able to pickup audio request from across the room with no issues so I believe mic quality is solid too. DVD writing is as quick as can be expected from an optical drive (drive is as noisy as can be expected too).
Pros: Bought this for my niece for Christmas, set it up and tested it. I was very satisfied. Most importantly it needed to be fast enough to run PowerDirector 15 for video editing and compilation. It worked very well. Attached Western Digital 2TB My Passport Ultra Portable External Hard Drive, USB 3.0 - WDBBKD0020BBK-NESN Black (from Newegg of course) and the transfer rates we good. With only 512 SSD you will need an external drive and I was pleased with this one (runs cool so no wasted heat sucking up energy). This laptop has very fast boot and shut down, a pleasure when installing software and when you need it up and going in a hurry.
Cons: As mentioned by a previous reviewer the built in webcam is not good enough for amateur or better use, but for the price of this machine I guess you can't have it all. One can always plug in a separate good quality webcam, but the built in camera is not as good as the standard cell phone these days.
Overall Review: I would recommend this to anyone who wants an overall great performer at a reasonable price. I did not compare battery life with other laptops in this price range, so no comment there. Keyboard was fine, no depressions in the chiclet shaped keys which would be nice for touch, but the keyboard is not cramped and has a separate number pad as well as options on the function keys for sound volume etc.
Pros: Fast cpu. It's in a TDP-up config and will happily crank up to 3.5 GHz.
512 GB ssd. Plenty fast with room for everything that I want to be portable.
Cons: No actual cons. Many things that I view as "stuff I didn't want to pay for anyway."
Did RMA one (of two) because wifi barely worked on it. The replacement is fine.
Overall Review: There are a lot of trade-offs here. It's a good balance. Given the price, nothing is worse than expected and several things are better. You can see most of these from the specs listed.
I don't understand how it cools. There's no obvious exhaust but ASUS worked some magic here and I've kept the cpu pretty busy for hours without approaching a throttling temp. The base spec for the cpu is 2.7 GHz, but ASUS put it in a 3.5 GHz config.
The keyboard feels fine and the layout feels almost natural. Note the full number pad.
I haven't pushed the gaming yet, but that wasn't the point of this purchase. It handles a modern fps on very low settings.
The sound is a "better than expected" thing.
It's not sexy unless you understand the specs. It's big. It's heavy. It has a VGA port. Pretty sure that I will get several years out of this before it starts feeling slow.
Giving it five stars. This machine deserves four stars easily and five stars for the price.
Pros: -Really good specs for the price.
-Boot up speed is very fast with SSD
-940mx is doesnt smoothly run things on high or ultra but for price its still nice to be able to play most games. I've only tried it with league of legends so far and had some issues the first time or two but then I downloaded updated drivers from nvidia and it has worked perfectly ever since. I keep it on mid settings while playing just in case.
-Screen is pretty good at a wide range viewing angles and is plenty bright for everything I've used it for.
Cons: -The battery life is pretty mediocre, it can last probably 3 hours on a full charge with the brightness most of the way up. This is really the only downside to this laptop considering everything else about it is so good.
-The screen is great for everyday use and has never bothered me, but i noticed in game that it was a good bit darker than my desktop monitor playing the same game.
Overall Review: I've had this for almost a month and I'm pretty happy overall. I wanted to wait a little while before writing a review so I could have time to really use it. The only downside is the battery but for being priced so well I can live with it, and you could probably get more life out of it by turning the brightness down.
Pros: -Love the SSD. Makes everything so much faster.
-Love the number pad on the right. Much more convenient.
-Sound is really good. Don't have a problem with not hearing anything.
Cons: -The capslock and numlock thing is a little annoying but it's nothing to reduce rating over.
Overall Review: -I would recommend this to all my friends.
Pros: -The Laptop is fast
- The laptop keeps cool. Asus laptop is much better than other brands in this aspect.
Cons: - The wireless network is too slow--only get about 5 Mbps, but my other two laptops all get 25 Mbps. The Wireless Adapter is "Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 Wireless Network Adapter". The laptop is with windows 10. I have tried a few ways to fix the problem, but none worked. I have updated the BIO, and downloaded the Wireless Adapter Drive from Asus website, but when I update the drive from Device Manager, it did not work. The window shows: "The best drive is already installed". Could anyone know how to fix it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Overall Review: - This is my 4th Asus laptop. The first 3 have not had any problem and worked well.
-Update: Upgraded the Router to Quantum G1100 with 5G, then the Laptop wireless connection went well.
Pros: -price point for the hardware was quite appealing
-seems like it would be a good travel machine which is why I got it- to be able to work on the road and still play a little bit of games here and there
Cons: -i didn't want to get something with Windows10 out of the box, but I can deal with it.
-mine arrived with a monitor defect- it appears as though the backlight in the bottom right corner of the screen is defective, as it does not light that corner of the screen up. this is really disappointing because I opted for this machine over an Acer due to frequency of Acer displays being defective out of the box and I didn't have time before I'd need this laptop for a trip to be messing around with returns or repairs.
Overall Review: Hoping I can send it back to be fixed or replaced in a week or two. I don't have time to wait on that right now though because I needed it for a trip I'm going on next week.
Pros: Fast stable and sturdy for the price. My wife is rough on electronics and this is holding up pretty well so far. Works good and she has not had any issues that she came to have me fix.
Cons: None so far for normal daily use
Overall Review: cheap is always good but alas.
