Will this heatsink fit the ASUS Maximus VIII HERO motherboard running the Skylake Intel quadcore i5 CPU?

I can't say precisely about your particular motherboard but it is a Humongous Cooler!  It will certainly go on an i5 in principle, but it's going to overhang a good bit of your motherboard and unless your motherboard has very good access to the socket from the sides you are going to need a 10" to 12" long screwdriver to get at the two final screws that tighten the cross-bar that holds the heat sink to it's frame.  I've got a faiyly roomy Asus board and I still had to take out all my RAM to gain working space while I did the installation but once installed it sits up reasonably high off the board and everything went back normally with decent clearance.
Be sure your case is deep enough for it though, I've got a full tower case and the tips of the heat tubes come within about 1/2" of the cover.
It's an awesome cooler, though.  Make sure to use a really good heat sink compound, though, it can't dissipate heat that doesn't get to it and that thermal interface is usually the bottleneck in the heat path.  Once I got the amount of compound just right, the only cooler I've ever had that was better than this was a water cooling setup.  Keeps my overclocked Xeon W3540 averaging about 32-38 C (depending on ambient) and it tops out at a maximum of about 48-52 C (again, depending on ambient) when the processor is at a sustained 100% use for a minute or more.

I have a coolmaster cm 690 II advanced mid tower case,with Asus z97 pro wifi MB, i7 4780k chip, and 4 sticks of G.Skill trident X series ddr2400 desktop ram. This thing sure is heavey at about 2 1/2 pounds and the height. will this fit my case without any trouble with size,fit and ram clearence. I'm using ssd's to help in editing family video's and buring to dvd or blueray disks. This has nothing to do with fit of cooler, but with stock fan I get half way thru and 12 min video rendering and I hit my thresshold 84C and above with stock cooler. Can anyone recommend something else if not compatable ??. thanks

No it wont fit.  your case is just over 8 inches wide and the heatsink for this is just over 6.6 inches.  you could get lucky but read the dimensions close.  but that's not your challenge, its your RAM.  the high profile heatsinks on the RAM make them too high.  the cooler extends over the closest 2 DIMMS making them almost useless unless you get lucky with some low profile RAM, that's why I used 2 sticks of 8GB to get 16GB.  the outer 2 should be fine with the high heatsinks.  good luck, hope this helps

NO  this thing is HUGE i have full blackhawk ultra and its  tight . plus  I have ASUS Saber tooth  MB  and the RAM cooling fins  ( Corsair vengances)  they wont fit because this over hang on on them . i just went with  a corsair H100i  hydro

Which direction does the fan blow? I saw no directional arrows while installing this.

I have never seen a PC fan that did not blow in the direction of the motor (where you see the wires coming out).  One could always plug it in to see.  Generally, one wants to blow the air toward the back of the case where there is another fan right there to suck it out, but that depends on your setup.  I would guess slightly better performance is gained by mounting so that the fan blows into the heat sink instead of sucking air from it. Of course, you could always put one on each side.

is it 4 or 3 pin power for optional fan?

4 pin connector.  The heat sink is large.  Despite the fact that I have a  large case & had re-routed all the cables from the area, I had to install the fan on the exterior of the case (about 2" away).  if you intend to use the fan, make sure you have plenty of room.

Thanks to George and all who responded.

It's hard to confess, but it may help some saps like myself in the future ... the fan shipped with the heat sink!  Yes its packed in an unlabeled box that I thought was packing!!!

Beyond that, with the Corsair Vengeance C70 case there is no clearance issue.  Fits just fine.

Another confession - I ordered another fan which should fit fine.  With the Lucifer purchase came another set of brackets which I will use.

Again, SOLVED, and thanks for the help!!!

the case shouldn't be a problem.  this thing is huge.  what you really have to be careful about is your motherboard and the location of your memory banks.  if the banks are too close to the CPU like say the 3 o'clock position, the 1 or 2 closest ones may be unusable if your RAM sits too high when slotted.  if you plan on using ram with top mount cooling fans forget about it.  hope that helps

I can't say in specific to that case (as I have an NZXT Phantom with a case depth of 21.3 cm and have about 6 or so inches between the side of the case and the top of the cooler), but looking at the dimensions the Corsair being 17.3 cm deep you should have plenty of room

No, it does not and it you definitely need one.  The shaft has to be about eight inches long and no more than a 1/4" in diameter.
