Is there a separate power supply or does the cooling pad gets it power from a USB connection through the computer it is cooling?

the power port is just a micro USB (standard wall charger for cell phones).  So you can either power it from the wall or if you wanted to I suppose you could get a reg USB to micro cable (both male) and power it from the laptop but that will draw down your battery.

As I recall (it's been since last Christmas) this doesn't come with a power supply, but like I said it's just a cheap wall charger.

Is the 4 Port USB powered or unpowered?

the ports are powered as long as you have plugged in a USB charger to the pwr input of the cooling pad.

I've never had a cooling pad for my laptop before, so I don't know how loud the fans are. Is this relatively silent or does it produce a noticeable sound that may be distracting while watching movies or playing games?

They are quiet, and if you game or watch video, then without a cooling fan like this, you will likely melt chips right off of your motherboard..

This cooling system has no real grippers.  It uses the pads on your laptop to hold it in place.
